Title: Hangover
Year: 2009
Director: Todd Phillips
Plot: A blowout Las Vegas bachelor party turns into a race against time when three hung-over groomsmen awaken after a night of drunken debauchery to find that the groom has gone missing, and attempt to get him to the alter before his wedding day. In 48 hours, Doug is scheduled to walk down the aisle, effectively ending his reign as a rowdy bachelor. Realizing that this is their last blow out with their best friend, Doug's groomsmen organize a Sin City bachelor bash he'll never forget. The next morning, the groomsmen come to in their Caesar's Palace suite to find a tiger in the bathroom and a six-month-old baby tucked away in the closet. Unfortunately, Doug is nowhere to be found. With no memory of the previous night's transgressions and precious little time to spare, the trio sets out on a hazy attempt to retrace their steps from the previous night, and discover exactly where things went wrong. Will they find Doug in time to get him to the wedding back in Los Angeles, or will his bride experience the sharp sting of disappointment when she walks down the aisle to discover that her future husband is nowhere to be found? Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Heather Graham star in a rambunctious comedy from Old School director Todd Phillips. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body: The Hangover I'd been wanting to see the one because of Zach Galifianakis but missed it in the theatre. I ended up seeing it unexpectedly at the end of a night at a house party. When things were dying down someone started playing what I assume was a pirated copy and I couldn't help but just staying and watching the whole thing. It was pretty much what I expected from previously seeing the trailer and some of Todd Phillips' other films. Zach is pretty much the highlight here. Although everyone else in the cast is good as well. Zach just has the more out of this world kind of acting. Doing things that other people might find embarrassing but Zach acts as though is just logical for his character. This is as opposed to the kind of frat boy mentality of Bradley Cooper and Justin Bartha's characters that embody the most overall tone of the film. This is the kind of tone that I would get sick of a lot quicker if it didn't have the likes of Zach in it. Sex and drugs are not funny in themselves, which I think sometimes movies like this assume. It's when the film kind of walks around those ideas and sees them from another angle that might be more funny. The part that made me laugh the most was after so much madness and so many problems were accruing, in a side moment Zach's character just finds a piece of pizza in the couch and starts eating it. Body: Plot: The movie begins with one of the grooms friend calling the bride as she is rehearsing for the wedding that they won’t be able to make it to the wedding since they lost the groom : And what a better place and time then at Doug’s bachelor party in Vegas. The trio in the party wake up after a night of crazy partying to a trashed up hotel room with a baby in the closet, Mike Tysons tiger in the washroom and a half naked chick prancing out of the room. They are called upon to retrace their steps backward to the previous night to find Doug so that they can make it to the wedding on time. Review: Based on the target audience (18 young males and females) this is one heck of a movie and probably one of the best comedies this summer. For everyone else it can be described as raunchy, gross humor specially catered to a younger male audience. The hangover is clearly a man’s movie, but it doesn’t fail to deliver in terms of cleverness and storytelling. Although the movie isn’t straight up funny as one would expect it to be, there are numerous scenes that are entertaining and hilarious. Right from the start till the end it captivates the audience and gets them thinking as to the possible whereabouts of the groom. The search for the missing groom results in a hilarious investigation to find his whereabouts before the wedding day and undoubtedly this stirs up the hilarious consequences of the past nights celebrations. Unlike more recent comedies (such as the Harold and Kumar series or Borat) that fit into this sub genre, The hangover isn’t over the top or outright funny. The Director, Todd Philips renowned for Old school, placed a lot of attention on the story telling and the plot of the movie. This is what makes this comedy stand out from others. Where this movie lacks in outright hilariousness, it makes up in clever, entertaining and funny story telling. The hangover represents a new era of “boys gone wild” type of comedy. This is definitely one of Philips better works by trying to marry the concept of “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” to a comical movie. As mentioned earlier the humor isn’t pushed over the top but there are definitely elements of rowdiness, and crude visuals. Although this movie is funny and entertaining, don’t count on it as being one of the best comedies in a long time.
Body: It’s mostly a blur. At some point, there was someone’s house. One guy was laying on the floor with a tiny dog licking his face while he giggled uncontrollably. A friend of a friend was picked up and creeping everybody out, and Heather Graham might have called the police on him. That is when I left. Was that my bachelor party or someone else’s? Or, was I watching The Hangover?

In comic book jargon, it is the gutter. That blank space between the sequence of images that allows your brain to fill in the gaps. Your imagination searches through the universe of possibilities based on the visible evidence.

The Hangover translates this to the big screen. The main difference is he Dali-esque absurdity of the evidence. You see, Doug is getting married on Sunday. He and a couple of friends, along with the bride’s brother, head off for Friday night in Vegas (baby). We see them toasting to the night to come, then the film breaks and resumes late Saturday Morning. The writers take a crack at what would be the most perplexing evidence to wake up to, and then let it slowly ravel.

There are times when it is so funny, you can’t keep your eyes open. There are also times where it is so cringe inducing, you can’t keep your eyes open. For all the shut eye, however, there is a fair amount of the movie you will actually watch. And with a little buzz to stretch one chortle to the next, it can be a belly-aching experience.
I can strongly recommend blazing it up for The Hangover, but be warned. While it does have the boundary busting humor of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, it is thin on charm. The movie is all about alcohol and date-rape drugs. Where the mushroom Vegas trip in Knocked Up toys with the senses, Jaegermeister leaves the rust on this razor blade.
A special shout out does go to Zach Galifianakis. His turn in this movie is special. Not special like Leonardo DiCaprio in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Ok, a little like that. He owns the character to a terrifying degree. After this film, I wouldn’t want to meet either of them without their parole officer present. No asylum, insane, political or spiritual, could hold him. Alan (Galifianakis) is excruciatingly cracked and honest. He is a never ending barrage of words and actions that range from brilliantly stupid to utterly revolting. His challenge to decency forces you to define lines that are, otherwise, never pondered. And, at altitude, that feeds the munchies in your subconscious.

If you have worn out your copy of Old School and don’t feel like watching Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up or any other in that litany, give The Hangover a spin. With a bit of herbal seasoning to cover up the tasteless bits, it’s a yummy, if not wholly, just desert.

Body: Once it was John Landis and Animal House and Bob Clark and his Porky's films. Now, when one thinks low brow frat boy humor, one’s mind tends to drift toward the films of Todd Phillips. Most likely the name will not ring a bell - his name is not big enough to create buzz from the multi-plex masses, nor indie enough to incite idol worship from the cinephiliac crowd - but his films (site specifically, Road Trip and Old School) are among the so-called elite of the genre. Yet, with the exception of a few (a very few) laughs interspersed within the toilet nyucks of Old School, Phillips is not exactly known for his classic comedic skills. He is known for a low brow technique of fart, feces and penis jokes, and being that guy who let man-child Will Ferrell run around completely stark-raving naked throughout his most well known film. His films, which also include the Starsky & Hutch retread and the somewhat underappreciated School for Scoundrels, have always seemed chock full of cheaply set-up, crass, bottom feeder humor not fit for anyone who has progressed beyond the age of thirteen – unless they are very drunk or very stoned. In Phillips’ defense though, these are probably the two most popular manners of watching his work, so I suppose in a way this approach works for him. It has never worked for me though. With all this in mind, I was pleasantly, and thoroughly surprised as I sat there in the dark watching his latest foray into the arena of the overgrown man-child, The Hangover. The film, set during the day after a night of bachelor party debauchery in Las Vegas, is smartly written and well acted and is directed with an almost slick winking of the camera-eye at the cinematic legacy that is Sin City. In a nutshell, Todd Phillips has finally done good. The (appropriately titled) Hangover stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis as three friends who wake up in a beyond trashed Vegas hotel room with a live tiger, a missing groom and no recollection whatsoever of what happened the night before that put them in such a state. Once they brush themselves off, put on their pants, lock the tiger in the bathroom and pick-up their stolen police car from the valet, the adventure to regain their memories and rescue their missing friend begins in earnest. As the movie progresses and our heroes (of sorts) become more and more entrenched in the ramifications of last night, the scenarios get curiouser and curiouser, and the laughs get hairier and hairier. Eventually there are arrests and kidnappings and ransom demands and surprise marriages and Mike Tyson and a pretty well played Rain Man meets 21 skit – and of course the obligatory naked man leaping out of the trunk and kicking everyone’s asses. Each new trouble becoming even worse than the one before and in turn funnier than the one before. It is within this structure that The Hangover becomes something more than mere dirty humor. It is within these confines that The Hangover becomes more of something on par with Arthur Hiller's The Out of Towners. Just like poor schmuck Jack Lemmon and his put upon wife Sandy Dennis in that 1970 comedy, Cooper, Helms and Galifianakis drown deeper and deeper and even deeper into a domino effect of unfortunate hilarity. As I said above, each new misstep becomes even more unbelievable than the last and in turn funnier than the one before. The ending may get a bit sickly sweet at times - schmaltz doesn't really go well with what else Phillips and his Vegas boys have going here - and could have probably been left undone. Perhaps, as the slogan alludes to, Phillips should have kept what happened in Vegas, in Vegas. The schmaltzy finale aside though, in a nutshell, the film done good.
</spout:body>

A really interesting concept or twist with this one.

Heather Graham, Jeffrey Tambor, Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper,Justin Bartha and Ed Helms work wonderfully together under the terrific direction of Todd Phillips

I was thoroughly pleased!
