<strong>Title:</strong> Star 80<br/>
<strong>Year:</strong> 1983<br/>
<strong>Director:</strong> Bob Fosse<br/>
<strong>Plot:</strong> Director <a href="/players/P____90209/default.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>Bob Fosse</a>'s fact-based tale of Playboy centerfold <a href="/players/P____68643/default.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>Dorothy Stratten</a>'s short life and gruesome death focuses less on Stratten (played by <a href="/players/P____93989/default.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>Mariel Hemingway</a>) than on her husband/manager, sleazoid pornographer and all-around failure Paul Snider (Eric Roberts, ideally cast). He sees the young beauty as his meal ticket and sets out to pimp her in the adult entertainment business. He marries her and appoints himself her career manager; soon after, she attracts the attention of Playboy executives and wins a spot in the magazine. As her success increases however, so does Snider's alienation as he finds himself left out in the cold. His jealousy begins to consume him; she spurns him on the advice of her new friends; he goes berserk and confronts her. The same murder-suicide inspired the made-for-television <a href=/films/84372/default.aspx style='text-decoration:underline'>Death of a Centerfold</a>. This was choreographer/filmmaker <a href="/players/P____90209/default.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>Bob Fosse</a>'s final film. ~ Jeremy Beday, All Movie Guide<br/>

<strong>Body:</strong> It's a shame that the wonderful director Bob Fosse's final film has been released on DVD with such utter disregard to the actual film itself. Full frame (ripped right off from a sub-par Laserdisc release, I hear), absolutely no special features or subtitle options, and the transfer and sound are both atrocious, especially since Fosse had such an eye for detail. It's a grim tale, and hardly a likeable character in it, particularly Eric Roberts, whose performance is of note because he is so unlikeable. Rarely do you see an actor so fully give himself to such a pathetic character and make you feel sympathy for a cold-blooded killer with serious issues. I can't recall another film I've seen with Mariel Hemingway in it, but she seems to hold her own as the somewhat-vapid victim, and the cinematography...so much to be said for it. Again, a shame I can't see it in all of its vivid colors and flashy, gaudy late-70's, early 80's glory. The "Playboy" photos of Dorothy Stratten are spot-on, and even the supporting roles are well handled. Definitely worth a watch, particularly to see Eric Roberts in his hey-day, whose role is reminiscent of Robert De Niro's Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver. But don't watch it with the kids - there's a lot of nudity (which is fine by me).<br/>

<strong>Body:</strong>
When I first learned of Bob Westal’s Bob Fosse Blogathon, my plan was to write about Star 80, a film I’ve never seen but have long wanted to. I had ample time, in the ensuing month and a half, to track down a copy of Star 80 on DVD, watch it two or three times, and come up with oodles of brilliant ideas in relation to it.
But I didn’t. I lost track of time. I forgot. And I inevitably found myself wandering around the East Village on Saturday, looking everywhere but finding Star 80 nowhere. Even Kim’s on St. Marks, which has a full Fosse section on its DVD sales floor, didn’t have it. “These are supposed to be the spoils of living in New York,” I grumbled internally on the subway back to Queens. “My apartment is too small and my savings are non existant, but at the very least, if I want to buy something, I’m supposed to be able to find it.”
I wasn’t necessarily shit out of luck, re: the blogathon–I have a copy of Cabaret on my DVD shelf, I could have just written about that–but at some point on the way home I decided that my inability to find a copy of Star 80 was significant. It certainly said something about my own laziness, but it also speaks to the film’s lasting legacy. Made by an Oscar-winning director, based on a true story, featuring actors portraying debatably significant real-life figures such as Hugh Hefner and Peter Bogdanovich, Star 80 has nonetheless fallen into the dustbin of cinema history. Even YouTube, the crumb catcher for the toaster of forgotten pop culture, offers no help.
I don’t have any explanations. I haven’t even seen the movie. But I can ramble a bit after the jump.
