Title: In the Shadow of the Moon
Year: 2007
Director: David Sington
Plot: Filmmaker David Sington merges the magnificence of science with the compelling drama of the human quest for advancement with this compelling and visually stunning meditation on the historic Apollo space program. In the four remarkable years between 1968 and 1972, American history took a defining turn as nine NASA spacecraft made the trip to the moon, and twelve bold explorers became the first men ever to set foot on ground beyond planet Earth. In this documentary, space enthusiast Sington allows the surviving crew members from each Apollo mission the unique opportunity to recount their memories of those missions in their own words as vintage, original NASA film footage offers a tantalizing glimpse of this extraordinary era in American history. Candid interviews with the astronauts reveal the sensitive and fun-loving souls whose fearlessness would lead a nation into a new era of progress, and audio recordings from Mission Control lend a newfound sense of poignancy to a variety of oft-recounted historical milestones. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body: in 1970 our whole family piled in the car and did the vacation thing, driving to NYC, Washington DC, etc., (a big deal, since we lived in Colorado). one very memorable highlight was a stop at the Smithsonian/Air and Space Museum, where we saw the Apollo 11 capsule and rocks that the year before had been on the moon. this documentary brings all that back and how awesome it was. most of these Apollo astronauts are in their 70s now and i'm so happy that they've been given the chance to share their experiences and stories. great stuff, with footage that hasn't been available before.
Body: This is a wonderful documentary about the Apollo program, told from the perspective of the Apollo astronauts. In the movie, we meet many of the Apollo astronauts; these are the only humans ever to have set foot on another planet, or to have seen the whole earth from space. It seems to me that the director took a leap of faith that these people would have something interesting to say for that reason alone. To his credit, he was right. Their stories are interesting, and their perspective is worth hearing.
