Roy Barnes prints the story of Keaton's incoming legacy in the local newspaper. As a result, literally hundreds of women, bedecked in veils and bearing bouquets, chase Keaton through the busy streets of Los Angeles. When Keaton's producer Joseph M. Schenck bought the film rights to the Roi Cooper Megrue stage play Seven Chances, Keaton opted to forego most of the play's plot complications, devoting his energies to the bride-hunting vignettes and the climactic slapstick chase. The final scenes originally laid an egg with preview audiences--until the sequence was saved by "three little rocks." During the closing moments of the chase, Buster accidentally dislodged three small stones in the ground, which rolled after him as he escaped the thundering herd of would-be brides. The audience laughed immoderately at the tiny rocks, thereby inspiring Keaton to reshoot the ending, utilizing scores of huge, rolling boulders. The extra effort worked beautifully; while not his best silent feature, Seven Chances contains one of Keaton's most hilarious finales. Body: This blog entry is part of my "movie year countdown round #2". Read more about that here. Seven Chances The movie starts off sweet and brings a few chuckles. It starts to build and build and then just suddenly explodes. From a comedy of more subtle interpersonal interactions to epic chases of unbelievably massive crowds and endless streams of gigantic boulders. There's not too much to scrutinize here, or if there is, I'd rather not. I'd rather just enjoy it, which is easy to do. Keaton brings tears of laughter and joy. Rating: 9/10

Body: Those with Netflix will know instantly to what I am referring here. Ever log on to Netflix and check out your Recommendations page? I normally don't. I try to use a more intuitive and organic approach to discovering films, and enjoy making it more of a "found item" journey than one in which one corporation tries to force-feed me the goods of another corporation. But every once in a while, I like to check the Recommendations page out, mainly because its a quick and simple way to add more ratings to Netflix (which I am, now that I think of it, unsure of why I even do that since, ultimately, the only real reason to do that is to get things recommended to you -- which I don't like...)Most of the time Netflix makes some sort of sense with their recommendations. Take, for instance, the fact they are recommending Madea's Family Reunion to me because I highly rated both Malcolm X and The Color Purple. Recommending Futurama Season 3 to me because I loved The Simpsons Movie, Futurama Season 1 and The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror is a no-brainer. I get that, even though they should probably figure that if I am that far into the Groening oeuvre, then I am probably hip to Season 3 of Futurama already.But then, Netflix produces some amazing whoppers. I am reminded of the Patton Oswalt bit about his first experience with TiVo, where he watches The Man from Laramie, a classic Anthony Mann western, and the next morning, TiVo has completely filled up with "horsie shows," a phrase Oswalt speaks in TiVo's voice, which most of us would recognize to be that of a stereotypical mentally disabled person. TiVo throws a fit trying to defend its decision, and Oswalt moans "Thank god, you don't have retard strength, TiVo..."Hopefully, Netflix doesn't either, because I am launching a new series here, in which I will give any of my readers out there the title of the films that Netflix uses as the basis of its recommendation, and then a couple of days from now, I will let you know the actual title of the movie it actually thought would be a decent match to the previous set of films. Body: I am not sure if there is a filmmaker in movie history whose geniuis is as self-evident in his films as is Buster Keaton's. Watching a great Keaton film is like watching Eisenstien solve equations, and also much funnier. His achievement becomes even more impressive when you know his biography (I hearilly recommend Marion Meade's book Buster Keaton: Cut to the Chase). Horribly physically abused by his father and neglected by his mother, Keaton recieved almost no education while growing up and remained nearly illiterate throught his life. Despite this, he was a genius with an instincutal grasp for how movies worked- technically, the only contemporaries who could rival him were Griffith, Lang and Eisenstien, and artistically, creating holistic, hilarious and intelligent works that were far ahead of his time. Despite the fact he was unable to read a novel, he posesed an understanding of structure that allowed him to break all the rules and still have his movies flow like a composition by Bach. Seven Chances is currently tied with Sherlock, Jr. as my favorite Keaton's films as director, I still have six left to go (I saw The General a long time ago, when I was too young to appreciate it.) Based on another forgotten play, this time by Roi Cooper Mergue, the film has a simple premise: Jimmy (Keaton) must get married by 7:00 pm on his 27th birthday, or else he will loose a seven million dollar inheritence from an uncle. Unfortatnley for him, he finds this out on his 27th birthday, giving him only a few hours to choose his mate for life. Oh no! Joke after joke is funny, and there are some impressive and really dangerious stunts. One of things that make Keaton movies so rich is how logical everything is- no matter how redicoulous the situation is, everything has an explanation that makes sense- everyone is acting in their best interest. In addition the comedy, Keaton adds a cute romantic story that works. Pretty much everything, aside from two unfortane jokes (one anti-Semitic and the other racist) works here, this is one of the finest comedies ever made from one of the greatest directors of all time. Body: This is a list for Round 2 of my movie year countdown viewing project as first described here. If by any strange chance whoever is reading this is actually following along you may notice that I'm still less than two thirds of the way through my original one. Well I'm starting this new one because as much as I love old movies it can get a little tedious watching just older movies. So I'm going to be blending my watching of the two lists together. Still focusing on the original one, but every once in a while sliding in the next entry from this new list.Again these new movies are limited to full length movies that are available on Netflix. And for this new round instead of picking a movie from every year, I will be picking a movie from every two years. For example the first movie must have come out during 2006 or 2007.
