Title: Speed Racer
Year: 2008
Director: Andy Wachowski, Larry Wachowski
Plot: The Matrix masterminds Andy and Larry Wachowski usher anime icon Tatsuo Yoshida's classic 1960s-era hit into the new millennium with this family-friendly story of a young racecar driver who takes on the mysterious Racer X in a custom-made, gadget-loaded speed machine named the Mach 5. Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is the kind of driver that every wheelman wishes he could be: a born winner whose unbeatable combination of aggression, instinct, and fearlessness always finds him crossing the checkered flag with a comfortable lead. In Speed Racer's mind, the only driver who could present him with any real challenge is his late brother - the legendary Rex Racer. Rex Racer died in a heated cross country rally known as The Crucible many years ago, and now his younger sibling is driven to fulfill the legacy that Rex left behind. To this day Speed Racer is fiercely loyal to family. It was Speed Racer's father Pops Racer (John Goodman) who designed the unbeatable Mach 5, and even a lucrative offer from racing giants Royalton Industries isn't enough to get the young ace to break his family ties. Upon turning down Royalton (Roger Allam)'s astronomical offer, Speed Racer makes the shocking discovery that that the outcome of the biggest races is being predetermined by a handful of powerful moguls who pad their profits by manipulating the drivers. Realizing that he career would be ruined if word of the fix gets out, Royalton vows that the Mach 5 will never make it to another finish line. Now, the only way for Speed Racer to save the family business and beat Royalton at his own game will be to win the very same race that claimed his brother's life so many years ago. In order to accomplish that formidable feat, however, Speed Racer will not only have to rely on his family and the aid of his longtime girlfriend Trixie (Christina Ricci), but form a tenuous alliance with his longtime rival - the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox) - as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body: Despite the current economic crisis affecting the automotive industry, American's still find an inordinate amount of love for their cars. Nascar has been gaining popularity outside its traditionally localized fan base in the Bible Belt and every year a slew of action-packed, fuel-injected motorhead flicks have been racing into theaters trying to complete with the latest romantic comedy. This week we'll be talking about all those films glorifying speed, leather-trimmed interior and perfectly pin-striped paint jobs on those chemical spewing chromed bringers of early death: the car. Going against the majority, I'm more than willing to expound on my affinity for the seizure inducing Speed Racer. It was F-Zero brought to the big screen and I couldn't keep my eyes off the candy-colored mess. I get a good number of disturbed looks by those I recommend Crash to. It's the light-hearted story of a man that loves a woman, in a car, after an intentionally car accident. This is the film that cemented my love for David Cronenberg. One half of Grindhouse, Death Proof was an exhilarating little adventure by Quentin Tarantino. And who can forget the indelible car and song Grease Lightning from Grease. So Ladies and Gentlemen, START YOUR ENGINES!
Body: As I scramble to catch the last couple of films that will complete my Oscar Watch List, I am prematurely making my picks for the statuettes tomorrow night. I will save judgement on the Foreign Language and Documentary Short categories, neither of which I have had the opportunity to get into since I live in a town where you can see 4 screens of Rambo, but you're lucky to get to see an independent or foreign film only months after it comes out on DVD at the local film club. That being said, I have also not had the chance to see 3 of the Documentary Features, but am confident in my decision in that category nonetheless. Otherwise, by tomorrow night's Academy Awards ceremony I will have seen every single movie nominated in every other category. So, onto my picks: Screenplay, OriginalShould Win: MilkWill Win: MilkMissing: The WrestlerScreenplay, AdaptedShould Win: Doubt or The ReaderWill Win: Slumdog MillionaireVisual EffectsShould Win: Iron ManWill Win: The Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonMissing: Speed RacerSound MixingShould Win: WALL-EWill Win: The Dark KnightSound EditingShould Win: The Dark KnightWill Win: The Dark KnightShort Film, Live ActionShould Win: Grisen (The Pig)Will Win: Spielzeugland (Toyland)Short Film, AnimatedShould Win: PrestoWill Win: PrestoOriginal SongShould Win: "Jai Ho" from Slumdog MillionaireWill Win: "Jai Ho" from Slumdog MillionaireMissing: "The Wrestler" by Bruce Springsteen from The WrestlerOriginal ScoreShould Win: Slumdog MillionaireWill Win: Slumdog MillionaireMakeupShould Win: Hellboy IIWill Win: The Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonFilm EditingShould Win: Slumdog MillionaireWill Win: Slumdog MillionaireDocumentary FeatureShould Win: Man on WireWill Win: Man on WireCostume DesignShould Win: The DuchessWill Win: The DuchessCinematographyShould Win: The Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonWill Win: Slumdog MillionaireMissing: Brideshead RevisitedArt DirectionShould Win: The Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonWill Win: The Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonAnimated FeatureShould Win: WALL-EWill Win: WALL-EDirectingShould Win: David Fincher for The Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonWill Win: Danny Boyle for Slumdog MillionaireMissing: Darren Aronofsky for The Wrestler Actress, SupportingShould Win: Penelope Cruz in Vicky Cristina BarcelonaWill Win: Viola Davis in DoubtActor, SupportingShould Win: Heath Ledger in The Dark KnightWill Win: Heath Ledger in The Dark KnightActor, LeadingShould Win: Mickey Rourke in The WrestlerWill Win: Sean Penn in MilkMissing: Leonardo Dicaprio in Revolutionary RoadActress, LeadingShould Win: Anne Hathaway in Rachel Getting Married or Meryl Streep in DoubtWill Win: Kate Winslet in The ReaderMissing: Kate Winslet in Revolutionary RoadBest PictureShould Win: MilkWill Win: Slumdog MillionaireMissing: The Wrestler, Doubt, and The Dark Knight
Body: Visually, there's no denying that the Wachowski's were on to something. The movie was a smorgasbord of colors. In fact, I think they might have even invented some new colors for it. But I've seen critics review this movie who figured out one reason it didn't do so well at the box office. The Wachowskis do experimental films on a big budget. They aren't going to make back the money that they spend on the film. I also don't know that people really gave it a chance. They automatically assumed since it was a live-action anime series it'd be bad. Heck, I thought so too. Especially as a Speed Racer fan. But really they pulled it off. It was rather true to the series. Cheesy? Yeah. But so was the original series. My biggest disappointment was the fact that they only wore the original costumes for a short period of time. And that they added the Mach 6. But I think the cast was fantastic, they all did a great job. Especially John Goodman as Pops Racer. He is Pops. And I loved the homages to the original series including the reference to the original opening and the voice actors cameos.
The other big mistake? It was a bit long. Especially for children. I'm not even sure who they were targeting in the movie. I'm almost lead to believe that Speed Racer was on the edge between adults who liked the series and kids. Which could be another mistake on their part.

But all and all, I definitely recommend it to people. I've had several friends who watched it and loved it. But like me, they all enjoy anime. So that might be a big factor in it. For the flaws it has, I feel like the movie itself manages to redeem itself and I hope they can find the money to make a sequel.
Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski did it again in this story about a young race car driver, who takes on the dangerous RACER X. Again, they have proven that they are masters of action and fast pacing. I really like this one.

Body:

I'm not sure what category to assign to these, bad they all contenders for Wirst Picture: .......... Speed Racer
I liked Speed Racer. You didn't Christy? :(
I couldn't get past the trailer...
Well in most cases I would chide you for judging a movie just based on the trailer without actually seeing it, but in this case I'd say you pretty much know exactly what you are going to be getting with the movie after watching the trailer.
I guess I put more weight on movie promotion than i should. Truth be told, most of the movies on that list are ones that I haven't seen from 2008. I know, I know, shame on me. But really I had no interest in seeing them based either on poor promotion, ridiculous subject matter, or reviews from reputable sources. So, on the one hand I feel kind of bad, but on the other I think Hollywood needs to step it up in terms of quality, I'm not going to go out and spend $9 on a ticket unless they can convince me and my movie critic sources that it is something worthwhile. I'll wait until it's on video, or when I go to visit my Dad who loves bad movies (he thinks they're good).
