Plot: We Like to Drink, We Like to Play Rock ‘n' Roll is a rockumentary that follows the Unband, three very funny, hard rocking guys who have been friends since childhood. Hailing from the benign college town of Northampton, Massachusetts, the Unband made every kind of mistake a power trio could before they disbanded. The group imploded under the weight of their success and the fallout from a variety of celebratory pastimes. What made them the “Unband”? Was it the partying until all the drugs and alcohol were gone, rocking so hard with elements of Spinal Tap creeping in, or the three of them on the floor, weeping with uncontrollable laughter about something they had made up in high school when they first became friends? Drummer Eugene Ferrari sums up the core of his power trio band mates, “They both have hearts of gold...surrounded by layers of various other substances.” During their glory days, they opened for Dio, Anthrax and Def Leppard to name a few of their mismatched tours. Their era was one of heady hard rock, pre-White Stripes, pre-Hives, pre-Strokes. They accumulated a fan base ranging from bartenders and musicians to Wall Street guys and record label execs on down to the working stiffs who just wanted to unwind with some head-pounding music cranked up to 11. We Like to Drink, We Like to Play Rock 'n' Roll showcases the boys in all their anthemic rock dumbness, contrasted by just how likable and smart they actually are...as individuals and as the teaming, seething, frothing Unband.

Body: I never lived in a frat nor attended frat parties. Yet, the world of Lexi Shabel's documentary on The Unband, helped me to attend my first frat party, complete with excessive male energy encased in a world of stupidity. If you love reading Drunkard, then this is the film for you. Even though I disliked the subject matter, found the world of male stupidity hitting an all-time asshole high, the film succeeds, and it was there that my attention stayed.Shabel brilliantly captures the essence of this band: dicks flying like metal beats, alcohol pouring through blitzed eyes, and a trio bonding through drink. The documentary follows the evolution of the band, with footage from early days interspersed with the boys years later, still trying to find a moment of stardom, even if it's to a lonely drunk in a random club. The camera continues to capture their desperation and spiral down, but ends with a positive sense of the boys finding their way out of their dicks, maturing a bit, even if their heart is still in the bottle pounding rock 'n' roll.
