Title: Masters of Horror: Sick Girl
Year: 2006
Director: Lucky McKee
Plot: A shy entomologist drawn into a tentative lesbian affair following the discovery of a mysterious new species of bug finds herself faced with a startling metamorphosis in May director Lucky McKee's creep-crawly entry into Showtime's terrifying Masters of Horror series. Ida Teeter's (Angela Bettis) life revolves around bugs, and upon discovering a large unidentified crawler while simultaneously being drawn into a heated affair with a beautiful young woman named Misty (Erin Brown), the studious wallflower's personal and professional lives begin heating up like never before. It seems that the bizarre new insect has some fairly strange feeding habits, and when seduction leads to infection and bloodletting, the stage is set for a horrifying mutation that will find Ida identifying more closely with her insect subjects than ever before. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body: I had a little Masters of Horror marathon with the Roku. It's a really amazing show. Genre directors do an hour long "episode," and it's on Showtime, so there's no holds barred scares, disturbing images and gore.It may seem weird to do reviews for episodes of a television series, but they felt like films. And I'm treating them as such. Except they're getting pretty short reviews. The first of my viewings was Fair Haired Child from director William Malone ("FeardotCom"). A girl is kidnapped and wakes trapped in a basement with a teenage boy. The two try to escape while discovering cryptic warnings carved into their prison. Tense and interesting with a good twist at the end.Sick Girl, from director Lucky McKee ("The Woods"), follows an entomologist as she finds true love and investigates a new species of insect. It's humorous and disgusting, much like McKee's films. I loved it.Cigarette Burns, from John Carpenter ("Ghosts of Mars"), is more about disturbing imagery and ideas than scares. And it delivers. A young man whose business is finding hard-to-find films is tasked with locating a print that makes viewers insane. Totally awesome.Pro-Life, also from Carpenter, features Ron Perlman ("Hellboy II: The Golden Army") as an extremist trying to break into an abortion clinic after his daughter checks in. But that's not the poor girl's only problem, her child is growing at an alarming rate. This one is bloody and very disturbing. Still well done.Despite a ridiculously long name, Incident On and Off a Mountain Road from director Don Coscarelli ("Bubba Ho-Tep"), starts off tense and then doesn't let up. A woman almost wrecks on a windy mountain road and then finds herself being terrorized by a monster. Another really excellent entry.
Body: Released: January 13, 2006Director: Lucky McKee*****Ugh. There must be a disconnect between Lucky McKee, director of Sick Girl and the general definition of "horror." Blood does not necessarily imply horror; nor does a preposterous plot about a bug which impregnates people. Seriously, that's what this movie is about. Unfortunately, it takes far too long to get to this "surprise" moment and miscasts its lead so hideously, there may be no casting misstep which makes its film this laughable in the last ten years.Ida Teeter (the aforementioned miscast Angela Bettis) strikes out with the women while holding a repository of bug information in her head. Potential girlfriends find her fascination with the creatures...distasteful, shall we say. So when she asks out the secretive Misty (Erin Brown), Ida is advised by a male coworker not to let her in on the "bug thing." Eventually, a super bug of sorts gets loose, causing havoc. The problem with Bettis and her portrayal of Teeter is simple: she is so stilted and stuffy it's impossible to believe anyone would find her attractive. She speaks...almost like...William...Shatner...pronouncing some words...with the harshhhest sounDs...she Kan. It's grating and irritating, not to mention comedic in most respects. Then there's the requisite horny coworker, who insists on details from Misty and Ida's first night together to give him some images for the shower. And a subplot involving an older land lady who does not approve of Misty and Ida's relationship.Okay, enough. Sick Girl has one thing going for it: director McKee going out on a limb and portraying lesbians in a horror film and portraying them as sexual beings. There is the foundation of an argument about the nature of homosexuality between Misty and Lana Beasley (landlady) which is never given the time to develop into anything more. Out of a sixty minute production, a full fifty are used to build the situation and characters...to such a boring and tired effect we don't care when the "horror" comes at the end. And even when we know what is happening to Misty around the thirty minute mark, we don't care since the situation is so far out of the realm of possibility. Horror works best when the action can happen to an every man (or woman). This has never happened nor will it ever happen to anyone.
Body: "Pelts",the most goriest masters of horror i have seen.Just got "Jenifer" and "Dance of the Dead" in the mail but i have not watched it yet. Will definitely check out "Cigarette Burns "after i watch jenifer and dance of the dead.Have you seen Deer Woman and Sick Girl?I liked Sick Girl better than Deer Woman. Also saw "imprint" just a few days ago.Definitely the most disturbing of all the masters of horror. It was a little to chatty and a the story a bit confusing and the drago character performance was not that cool.I did, however, like the torture scene. And those torturers (older lady )had very ugly teeth.
Body: just saw deer woman last night and i thought the flick was so-so;the ending was not that cool for me and there was some cheesy effects on the movie;I thought the deer woman was a very beautiful lady minus the bottom part ofcourse(feet/hooves);The story was not too bad;i liked the case story with the bit of background mix of an indian legend.Guess, i tend to like stories that deal about fable/tales/legends.Would give this master story 3 out of 5 starsalso sick girl;i seemed to have liked this better than deer woman; In general,i like the story and the ending was o.k.Would give this master flick 3 1/2 out of 5 stars;(theres no half stars in spout ,so i officially gave it a 4 although it really feels more like a 3 1/2)
Body: I'm really not sure what actually qualifies certain directors to be asked to contribute to this series, but I will definitly skip any more Lucky McKee directed films. This movie sucked super hard. If I wanted to watch a lesbo porno I would have rented one. I do not care for Angela Bettis (I was under the impression that her character in "May" was supposed to act like that because she was strange, not because that is the extent of Ms. Bettis' range as an actress) as an actress, so I should have known better than to expect much from this episode. What a loser of a film. A giant bug...sheeesh!
