Body: All the ones that immediately come to mind have been stated. Some other good examples are: The People Under the Stairs - This was one of those movies I never sat down and actually watched all the way through until a few years ago. Growing up it was on television all the time. I remember seeing bits and pieces of it and getting scared and changing the channel. There is so much random shit going on in the film that I actually thought the parts I had seen were from completely disparate movies. The poor black family planning to rob a wealthy family, the freaky brother sister bondage craziness, the alien like monsters living under the stairs - its just insane. But watching it all together its easily become a favorite guilty pleasure of mine. The Strangers - I really liked this one. The wholesomeness of Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman mixed with the depravity of the intruders and those even freakier masks they wear was just plain unnerving. Last House on the Left - Didn't see the remake but the original was good enough. I Spit on Your Grave - This one struck me as very similar in parts to Straw Dogs in various aspects. The local townies finding an innocent woman to brutalize and the ultimate retribution that follows. The Edukators - Fun little foreign flick about a bunch of radical activists that decide to break into wealthy homes and cause chaos but without actually stealing anything. The Ref - Don't really remember this one except that Denis Leary is his usual jive talking self and holds a couple hostage in their own home. Need to check it out again.
Body: The mood and character set-up are pretty good here and there are certainly some nice scary parts. However, what I think totally sinks the film is that director Bertino never sets up a good sense of space. About halfway through the film I realized I had no idea where the characters were in relation to the house from one scene to the next. They seemed like they were in this very big house, but we only get to see like two or three rooms in it. Then, a barn is introduced halfway into the film that it's not clear how far it is from the house. I lost track of where Tyler and Speedman were in each scene and thus lost interest in their predicament. But, still didn't totally dislike it. More like a missed opportunity.
Body: Here's a list of '08 releases that I think you should see. I really think that this was a year for fun movies. 1. The Fall – This was probably the best movie watching experience I’ve had this year. I went into this expecting not much more than eye-candy and was completely blown away. This was a beautifully told children’s story that rivaled Pan’s Labyrinth….Keep in mind, no special effects were used in this film. 2. Sukiyaki Western Django – I used babelfish to translate this title from Japanese to English and it came back with “Suck On This, Stephen Chow.” Takishii Miike teams up with Quinten Tarentino for his first English language film and it superfreakin’ coooool. Hot girls, martial arts and some guy running around carrying a gatling gun; I’m getting a bit teary-eyed just thinking about it. 3. Doomsday – “Hey Neal Marshall, you can’t make a full length movie without a plot!!” say the naysayers. “Who needs a plot? I’ve got decapitations, explosions, cannibalism, fast cars, tattoos, cleavage, tattooed cleavage and medieval knights.” 4. The Strangers – I’m not really into the horror genre usually but I thought this movie did a great job of setting a terrifying mood. 5. In Bruges – This was a tragic drama disguised as a British dark comedy. It really surprised me how much I liked it. 6. Wanted – Director Timur Bekmambetov is very quickly gaining a reputation of way over-the-top action with this one and his previous Night Watch and Day Watch. If you pay too much attention to this one, you undoubtedly fall into one of the many plot holes. Just watch it. It’s pretty fun. 7. Burn After Reading – This is the part where I get called a “Coen Brothers apologist.” I can’t help it. I love their films and this one is no exception. Again, it was fun and I loved the dialogue. 8. A Dirty Carnival – This one, like The Fall, was made in ’06 but I don’t think anybody in the states actually saw it until its dvd release in October of ’08. It’s a Korean gangster story with a soft and a times comedic side. It’s a bit long but well worth the time. 9. Horton Hears a Who/Kung-Fu Panda – Both of these were a hell of a lot of fun. I think I liked Horton a bit more but Who’s counting…… he he. 10. Hellboy II: The Golden Army – I’ll be honest, I missed about half of this movie and still have yet to find the time to sit through it but what I saw was pretty damn incredible. Guillermo del Toro is on my short list of directors in which I’ll see everything they come out with. Also worth noting are recent Criterion Collection dvd releases of Wes Anderson’s Bottle Rocket and Costa-Gavras’ Missing. Older films with new material... good stuff.
Body: Liked these (in no particular order): Cloverfield Incredible theatrical experience. Might be hampered watching at home. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist Cutesy teen flick. Had a great 80's feel to it. Hamlet 2 Perverse and just plain hilarious throughout. Great original music. House Bunny I'm a sucker for Anna Faris and she plays a ditzy Playmate perfectly. The Dark Knight A comic geek's wet dream. My Winnipeg Immensely creative, original film. A flurry of emotions in a bizarre little package. WALL-E Heartbreakingly sentimental love story; action packed galactic adventure. Iron Man Another comic geek's wet dream. And Robert Downey Jr. Nuff said. The Fall Just insanely wondrous film. Deserves the comparisons to The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Speed Racer Seizure inducing fanboy fun. Savage Grace Frightening 'Based on a True Story' film. Amazing performances. The Strangers Nothing new, but executed perfectly. Dark, abysmal terror. My Blueberry Nights Subtle, nuanced performances and beautiful direction. Packed with emotion. Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day Carefree, fanciful period flick. Amy Adams and Frances McDormand are a perfect slapstick duo on screen. Jumper Big budget Sci-Fi blockbuster without all the annoying garnishes. Watching the Detectives Made for cinephiles about cinephiles. Hokey fun. Movies that might be on my list that I haven't seen yet: Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead The Curious Case of Benjamin Button The Spirit Doubt The Wrestler The Brothers Bloom Revolutionary Road Repo! The Genetic Opera Humboldt County Just Buried Milk Australia Rachel Getting Married W. Fear(s) of the Dark Synecdoche, New York Zack and Miri Make a Porno Towelhead Vicky Cristina Barcelona The Wackness Brideshead Revisited Glass: A Portrait in Twelve Parts
Body: For some reason, I thought The Fall was a foreign film. It's not. It's just a beautiful, tragic story of a little girl in the hospital and a young man who tells her stories while they heal. Only it's way more. It broke my heart. I cried and laughed and enjoyed the visual delight of the stories. See it.A classic sci-fi film, The Day the Earth Stood Still, is about to get the remake treatment. This version has a polite, well-dressed alien in the form of Michael Rennie ("Assignment Terror"), trying to save the Earth from itself. The movie gives an interesting look at how an outsider might see our world. It also shows how humans are easily led to distrust what they don't understand, outsiders of nay sort. I hope the remake can capture at least some of this.I really loved Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Jason Segel ("Knocked Up") stars as a musician who's actress girlfriend dumps him. Then he goes to Hawaii to try to get over her, only she's there, too. It's sweet sometimes and seems like a real relationship. But it's also hilarious. Often with the main people, but the side characters are all memorable and funny as well. And the mock CSI is brilliant. Can't wait to see this again.Writer/director Bryan Bertino's feature debut The Strangers The Strangers (2008)is a mesmerizing nightmare. A couple find themselves in a remote cabin tormented by three masked strangers. Liv Tyler ("The Incredible Hulk") and Scott Speedman ("Adoration") are really the only two with any screen time, and they are totally believable. The colors of the film are great, warm and dark. The atmosphere is creepy and leads us in slowly so that we buy into the terror on screen. I can't wait to see more from Bertino. An After Dark Horrorfest movie, The Deaths of Ian Stone is one of their better offerings. Mike Vogel ("Caffeine") stars as a young man who wakes every day in a slightly different life, only to be hunted down and killed by mysterious clawed shadow creatures. The effects are quite good. And I enjoyed the mythology and slow build to the reveal of why this is happening to Vogel.
And I enjoyed the mythology and slow build to the reveal of why this is happening to Vogel.</spout:body>

Body: Crack, craSHH, scream, click. Good sound design. Is that it? About it. Not sure if this was some Funny Games copy gone awry or an honest attempt at box office penetration, or both. The first act is really cool, the relationship stuff and how the plot points are delivered in a kind of choppy flash forward / flash back / etc way that works. Yet after that the pic deteriorates into the genre norm minute by minute, cut by cut.Lord, I gotta say one thing - Liv Tyler has never looked more beautiful on film and plays a great damsel in distress.Round the end we get to see hints at the true identities of the intruders. By that time I was bored and looking at the clock. Effective thriller for the middle-expectation filmgoer thrill seeker.** / ***** The Strangers (2008) Funny Games (2007)
Body: I'm not sure where to begin, this representation of a factual event is pointless. If you want to write a movie based on true events, then use the true events you have. However, as scripted in the beginning of the film, there are no stories or facts ever recorded. So instead lets make a drawn out low budget "horo-medy" about, one of 5,000 ideas of what could have happened. Of course under the influence of a hallucenigen, I may have really enjoyed these special effects, you know the flaming car, the perfectly handwritten letters on the windows, oh and lets not forget the ingenious masks they wore, wow thats an easy halloween costume for next year. The sub par acting distracted me from this true masterpiece, or maybe it was the film as a whole that distracted me from my life. At times it was hard to see because most of the film took place in the dark, Mr. bertino, feel free to apply to a film school and learn how to shoot film at night. Instead of an afternoon holding my girl close so she wouldnt be scared, we laughed along and made easy criticisms throughout. We even paused it for a phone call and contemplated going to a bookstore instead. I was impressed though, impressed that any studio would pay the money to have such a film produced. Do you really think at the end of these actors legacies, they'll look back and say, ya know that movie really helped push my career along. I have heard of a sequel in the future, and i just can't wait to see if it'll go straight to dvd. disappointed wouldn't cover my feelings, I'd say more of a "what the fuck did I just watch" should do it. By all means see this movie for the un-honorable film it is. All my love - The guy who wasted an hour of a half watching darkness.
Body: I saw The Strangers. I'd give it a 2/5. There wasn't really a plot, just people being chased in and out of their house all night. There was no explination as to why the strangers were doing what they were doing, which wasn't necessarily needed, but this movie needed something else to make itinteresting, and it just didn't have anything. It basically went like this::: Couple fights Creeps show up Long game of hide and seek End Credits *shrug* just didn't do it for me
Body: It was a total waste of my time and money. I have seen better acting in high schools plays and more scary scenes on Scoby -do cartoons. There was no explanation of what was going on or no ending. Who told the story? Who was the one calling 911 in the beginning.? Did they catch the intruders?
