Title: Eagle vs. Shark
Year: 2007
Director: Taika Waititi
Plot: Two lonely misfits embark on a bizarre journey of romance and revenge after bonding at a "come as your favorite animal" costume party in Academy Award nominee Taika Waititi's quirky romantic comedy. Jarrod (Jemaine Clement) is a clerk at the local electronics store. Lily (Loren Horsley) is a shy cashier who earns her keep at the local Meaty Boy. After getting fired from her job, an emboldened Lily determines to put on her favorite shark costume, shed her inhibitions, and attend Jarrod's annual "come as your favorite" animal bash. In the following days a tentative romance begins to develop between Lily and Jarrod, and when Jarrod announces plans to travel back to his hometown and seek revenge on an old nemesis, Lily decides to follow along for the ride. As Jarrod begins to set his diabolical plan into motion, Lily finds herself stranded in an unfamiliar new town and surrounded by a disorienting collection of eccentrics. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body: The humor was really dry to me. even more dry that napolean dynamite. I also hated the characters. The awkward parts weren't that funny but there was a cool scene with an apple.
Body: Great quotes like that make this movie pretty classic. My favorite seen is when the lead girl is winning everyone at Mortal Combat and then the lead guy she likes starts playing and she just stares at him with adoration. With her eyes off the video game screen he takes her head and rips it out of her body in the game and then is holding a head that has a spine dangling out of it. In one scene you see whats going to happen over the course of the movie. Brilliant.
Body: This film nails its tagline – “Finding love was never so… Awkward.”Both of the main characters – the sweet Lily and the arrogant Jarrod, seem almost too awkward on their own to function in society, but that’s their appeal in this “loser genre” film along the lines of “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Me, You, and Everyone We Know”. The situations and conflicts are things that would normally not be seen as troublesome, but Lily and Jarrod react and speak in such a response to them that some of us were squirming uncomfortably in our seats as they struggled to communicate. In their ability to remain deadpan throughout the entire film and emote a strong reaction (of various kinds) from the audience, Jemaine Clement (Jarrod) and Loren Horsley (Lily) were fantastic actors. The story was filled with various curves and twists, some more predictable than others, that didn’t bore for a moment, and the clips of stop-animation were great supplements to the main storyline. All said and done, the film is fantastic – for its target audience. If you’re the type who has yet to find the humor in the “loser” genre, “Eagle vs. Shark” will not change your mind much.
