<strong>Body:</strong> Adnkronos, an Italian press agency that specializes in English-language news from the Arab world, is reporting today that Persepolis creator/co-director Marjane Satrapi and her fellow Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf (probably best known here for his 2001 film Kandahar) “presented a document to Green Party MPs in the European parliament claiming to show that defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi had received over 19 million votes in the weekend election.” The document, purportedly from the Iranian Electoral Commission, also claims that standing president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came in third place with just 12 percent of the national vote.

Makhmalbaf is closely aligned with Mousavi, and has been extremely vocal in the days since the election results were announced in Ahmadinejad’s favor, saying that Mousavi has asked him “to warn the world that this is a coup d’etat, and Mousavi  has asked for the world’s governments not to recognise a president created by a  coup.” As a result, Makhmalbaf’s own website has been the target of a number of cyber attacks (hence, I’ll refrain from linking to it).

Watchmen is coming out pretty soon, and up until last week I don't think I could ever say I'd read a graphic novel before.  Someone lent me their copy of this book, and I'm actually only halfway through it still, but I'm really hooked. So for this poll I tried to pick movies that came strictly from graphic novels.  For instance there were some I was originally going to add, but my research indicates that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book series and 30 Days of Night is a comic book mini-series.  In the case of American Splendor I couldn't tell if these were "comic books" or "novels" (I haven't seen the movie either...) so I just left it off to keep the list as focused as possible.  And as for anything Japanese or manga based, that's just another huge world that I might do another poll about later, but for now I didn't include anything from that.  Sorry if I missed your favorite, but please feel free to discuss.    Please vote only once in each poll.       <title>Spout Post: If Persepolis Silenced Gran Torino in Dark Corners</title>

<strong>Body:</strong> Dark Corners started out as a pretty interesting horror movie with Thora Birch ("Train") playing dual roles as a depressed, poor woman having beautiful dreams and a wealthy, happy woman having nightmares. They seemed to be dreaming each other's lives. And then it just descended into making zero sense and plausibility. I don't mind bending the rules of space and time. But there needs to be something I can hold onto as possible.Gran Torino gives us Clint Eastwood ("Million Dollar Baby") at his grizzled best. Eastwood stars as a grumpy old racist man living in a changing neighborhood. He starts getting close to his Hmong neighbors who change his outlook as he tries to keep them out of trouble. Besides Eastwood, the acting of the unknowns in the film is atrocious. But the story is so good, that I mostly overlooked that. And I enjoy Eastwood as a director. He doesn't waste time. All the shots are important and further the story. If this is truly Eastwood's final acting performance, then this is a good one to end with. But I hope he keeps directing for many more years.Another in the Filmspotting Angry Young Men Marathon, If... just confirms that I don't like this genre. A very young Malcolm McDowell ("Bolt") stars as a disgruntled, head-in-the-clouds, authority hating teen at a boarding school. As the term wears on, McDowell and his friends rebel against some older bullies and the teachers backing them. And a full-fledged war develops. There are some very surreal sequences as well. These supossedly emphasize the absurdness of the society and school. I just didn't enjoy it.Persepolis is an animated coming-of-age story of an imaginative Iranian girl during and after the Islamic Revolution. I really enjoyed the black and white animation. Very dramatic. And the story. It was funny, informative and heart-breaking. I don't know much about the Islamic Revolution, but this story, based on the life of cowriter/codirector Marjane Satrapi, shows the long-lasting effects on one family. Very good.And then I rewatched Silence of the Lambs. I don't know what to say about it that hasn't already been said. It still rocks. It's still tense even though I know exactly what's coming. Anthony Hopkins ("Beowolf") is perfect and not over the top. Jodie Foster ("Nim's Island") is all young and determined to prove herself. I love it!<br/>

I really enjoyed Clooney's performance, and the movie dealt with ethics in a very deep, real way without making everything obtusely black and white.  But... Ocean's 13?  Really?  I liked the Ocean's series and the Rat Pack/heist flicks they harkened back to, but I thought this to be the weakest of the bunch with a scattered plot and what seemed like endless inside jokes delivered at a pace that left the audience trying to catch up through the entire film, and further obscured any attempts at humor or storyline. Maybe they were released in the US in 2007, but I'm not sure. Movies that didn't quite make my Top 10: Persepolis, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and There Will Be Blood. It's not like a good friday night movie at all, unless you are feeling in a particularly dark mood, and maybe it's a terrible idea then too. I'm not sure what the proper mood or motivation to watch this movie would be. I eventually just bit the bullet and watched it. When it was over, I was tired and felt like a crazy person, but I loved it. So hard to explain. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is the longest movie title in the world (I would actually really like to know what the longest movie title is). It's so hard to spit it out when people are like "what's good movie you've seen recently?" But, nonetheless, I do spit it out because it was beautiful and interesting and I loved the characters. Skypilot, how on earth did Hot Fuzz beat The Diving Bell and the Butterfly for your top ten? Were you just trying to be diverse in genre? I only say this because I think making a movie about a guy who can only communicate with one eye is incredibly difficult. I expected it to be the most arts, boring piece of crap I have ever seen. Ya know, the sterotypical french new wave kind of stuff that ends with "fin". But it wasn't, it was surprisingly human and colorful and full of life. It fits with something I read recently that "your plight is also your redemption". Good times.<br/>

Persepolis - I really enjoyed this animated bildungsroman. 2.) 300 - I know it got a lot of flack, but damn if it wasn't one of the coolest looking movies. Nudity, blood, gore, and violence to the umpteenth degree. No extraneous thought necessary and I liked it. 3.) Year of the Dog - Molly Shannon in an amazing role for her. The vegan, PETA freak subject matter turned a good amount of people off this film but definitely worth a look. 4.) Waitress - Keri Russel is just so darn lovable in this flick it's practically unbearable. 5.) Grindhouse - Again, lots of divided people with this one. Some loved just one of the two films or hated it with a passion. I loved the whole thing (especially the faux trailers during intermission). 6.) Southland Tales - The convoluted plot and army of bizarre characters made this one unwatchable for some . . . but not for me. 7.) Margot at the Wedding - Just a great little emotional romper-stomper screwball comedy. 8.) Angel-A - Luc Besson is the shit. In a non-stinky poo kind of way. Great movie. 9.) Smiley Face - Completely unlike Gregg Araki's other films, but Anna Faris is unbelievably hilarious in this film. 10.) Ira &amp; Abby - Quirky romantic comedy. I'm a sucker for those.   Some family flicks that were also pretty good: Hairspray - Nothing like the original, but decent nonetheless. The Last Mimzy - Adorable little sci-fi flick for kids. Shrek the Third - I actually thought I would despise this considering the second film in the series annoyed me considerably, but I actually enjoyed it.
