Body: We're throwing caution to the wind and hoping for a windfall this week. There's a reason Las Vegas is such a popular destination: the strippers and all you can eat buffets are a distant second to the lure of taking a chance on the endless stream of slot machines, roulette wheels and poker tables where a single stroke of luck can bring you unimaginable riches (or at least pay for a go at the buffet later). I've always loved those smokey gambling dens of iniquity where the liquor is cheap and so are the woman such as those in The Big Sleep, Gilda, and Dick Tracy. The dangerous illegal gambles where life is on the line are also rather intriguing like in the inconceivably funny The Princess Bride, ultra realistic Intacto and historical accurate Barry Lyndon. Recently I've taken a liking to Texas Hold'em and movies such as Rounders, Ocean's 11, Casino Royale and My Blueberry Nights do the game justice (with losers like Lucky You and All In making a mockery of it). So what other movies are there about gambling / games of chance?

Body: Liked these (in no particular order): Cloverfield Incredible theatrical experience. Might be hampered watching at home. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist Cutesy teen flick. Had a great 80's feel to it. Hamlet 2 Perverse and just plain hilarious throughout. Great original music. House Bunny I'm a sucker for Anna Faris and she plays a ditzy Playmate perfectly. The Dark Knight A comic geek's wet dream. My Winnipeg Immensely creative, original film. A flurry of emotions in a bizarre little package. WALL-E Heartbreakingly sentimental love story; action packed galactic adventure. Iron Man Another comic geek's wet dream. And Robert Downey Jr. Nuff said. The Fall Just insanely wondrous film. Deserves the comparisons to The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Speed Racer Seizure inducing fanboy fun. Savage Grace Frightening 'Based on a True Story' film. Amazing performances. The Strangers Nothing new, but executed perfectly. Dark, abysmal terror. My Blueberry Nights Subtle, nuanced performances and beautiful direction. Packed with emotion. Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day Carefree, fanciful period flick. Amy Adams and Frances McDormand are a perfect slapstick duo on screen. Jumper Big budget Sci-Fi blockbuster without all the annoying garnishes. Watching the Detectives Made for cinephiles about cinephiles. Hokey fun. Body: Here's another one: My Blueberry Nights. When I saw this movie, I couldn't believe how bad the writing was. Rachel Weisz's acting was way over the top, Norah Jones' character's motivations were completely unexplained, and Natalie Portman and Jude Law spouted cliche after world-wise cliche. But when I mentioned this on the filmspotting message board, I got shot down. I have no explanation for why this is. Maybe Wong Kar-Wai put something in the coke machine that brainwashed the viewers? Body: About 13 or 14 years ago I fell in love with Wong Kar-Wai and foreign film when I saw Chungking Express. my blueberry nights had me reminiscing and remember why I love this director even more than many of his intervening films have over the past decade. Although I could have done without the closing line in the film (I really though the visual spoke for itself), my blueberry nights is a worthy english language addition to Wong's already phenomenal repertoire. I even watched with the subtitles on, and felt like I was a teenager again, beginning to truly recognize the beauty of film.

Body: At times, My Blueberry Nights doesn't even seem like a movie. It reminded my of a first novel by an English major, in love with the tone of their own writing. Believing that film is a visual medium, I often don't comment much on the script, but I have to say that there's really no way this could have been a good movie. The screenplay is so stupid and self-consciously arty (is that word?) that no director, not Wong Kar-Wai, not Ingmar Bergman, not Francis Ford Coppola, could have made it work. That's not to say the only flaw is the script, but we'll get to that later. The movie is three different stories concerning the wandering Elizabeth (singer Norah Jones in her first movie) who is recovering from a break-up. She stars in New York, and forges a friendship with Jeremy (Jude Law) a British guy who owns a café. He falls in love with her, and she gets close to him, but she's not ready to commit. Although she already has a job, Elizabeth can't sleep at night, so she gets another job as a bartender. Is she aware that if she really can't sleep, she'd be a hallucinating and dead in about a week? Anyway, while at the bar, she observes the very end of a breakup between Arnie (David Strathairn, who gives the best performance in the movie) and Lynne (Rachel Weisz). Heading to Nevada, she makes friends with gambler Leslie (Natalie Portman) who lies a lot. The movie has an incredible number of obvious stupid metaphors- the blueberry pie of the title, a bar tab, a car. It also has numerous ridiculous scenes that would never ever happen in real life. At one point, a character pulls a gun in a bar and threatens to kill someone, and nearly pulls the trigger. The next day, he's back in the bar as if nothing happened. Right. I'd certainly want to come back to that bar with that guy as a patron! Not only that, but Norah Jones is frankly not a good actress. She doesn't even come off as a professional one, often seeming fake. This movie is like spending ninety minuets with an overly snobby and pretentious high school student who writes poetry at Starbucks. I was surprised there wasn't an Alanis Morissette song over the credits. My Blueberry Nights (2007)

Even more, I think it’s a waste of his writing talent, as it’s his first film where he’s not (credited as) one of the screenwriters. But, as Karina argued, a guy has to earn a paycheck now and again, and if him making this stoner comedy means I get to see more beautiful little films from Green in the future, then I should be happy for him and thankful to Apatow and Columbia Pictures. After all, great actors do this sort of thing all the time, so why shouldn’t it be okay for directors? However, all too often a sellout film can leave a really bad taste in our mouths. Sometimes that one really commercial movie will harm a filmmaker’s career for a long time, whether because it’s a box office flop or because it ends up only being the first in a new, more-mainstream direction for the filmmaker (see John Woo, sort of). Hopefully Pineapple Express won’t be as bad as any of these famous disasters by otherwise great directors: Alien Resurrection (1997) - It kind of seemed a dream come true that Jean-Pierre Jeunet (The City of Lost Children) would be wooed by Hollywood, especially for something as high-profile as the fourth Alien installment. But like many great foreign filmmakers, Jeunet was not nearly as great with an English-language script (nor is, apparently, Wong Kar-Wai). The movie looked really good, as had Jeunet’s French films, but overall the film was quite disappointing. It wasn’t necessarily Jeunet’s fault, but because he wasn’t fluent in English, it was likely difficult for him to communicate well with the actors and to see the faults of Joss Whedon’s script. Body: Via The Reeler comes news that Wong Kar Wai’s My Blueberry Nights, the Hong Kong auteur’s English language debut, which opened the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, has been bumped from its Valentine’s Day release date to early April. Release date delays of multiple months are rarely considered a positive sign??????especially when we’re talking about a film that was mostly excoriated by the international press at the one and only film festival at which it screened??????but in this case, I don’t know. The Weinsteins haven’t started to promote Blueberry in earnest, so it’s not like they’re throwing away money already spent. There’s plenty of datey competition the first two weeks of February (although, it should be noted, nothing remotely arty or adult), with TWC’s own Diary of the Dead slotted in as Valentine’s counter-programming on the 15th. If nothing else, moving Blueberry to April gives the struggling Weinsteins time to support it without dividing their resources, which is what I blame for their inability to effectively platform either Control or I’m Not There. But in that case, why not put it at the end of the month and try to relaunch it at Tribeca??????a festival that, at least historically, LOVES throwing big, stupid premieres to launch star-studded product? Release date delays of multiple months are rarely considered a positive sign??????especially when we’re talking about a film that was mostly excoriated by the international press at the one and only film festival at which it screened??????but in this case, I don’t know. The Weinsteins haven’t started to promote Blueberry in earnest, so it’s not like they’re throwing away money already spent. There’s plenty of datey competition the first two weeks of February (although, it should be noted, nothing remotely arty or adult), with TWC’s own Diary of the Dead slotted in as Valentine’s counter-programming on the 15th. If nothing else, moving Blueberry to April gives the struggling Weinsteins time to support it without dividing their resources, which is what I blame for their inability to effectively platform either Control or I’m Not There. But in that case, why not put it at the end of the month and try to relaunch it at Tribeca??????a festival that, at least historically, LOVES throwing big, stupid premieres to launch star-studded product? Maybe this is actually a sign that Tribeca meant it when they said they were going to downsize and generally try to be less ridiculous. If so, good news all around!
