Title: Be Kind Rewind
Year: 2008
Director: Michel Gondry
Plot: When a bumbling movie lover becomes magnetized while attempting to sabotage a local power plant and accidentally erases all of the videotapes in the small video store where his best friend works, the pair attempt to keep the store's loyal customer base by remaking as many as the top-renting movies as possible. Mike (Mos Def) is an employee at Be Kind Rewind, a modest mom and pop video store that is owned by Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover). Mike's best friend Jerry (Jack Black) works in an auto garage/junkyard directly adjacent to a local power plant. Lately Jerry has become increasingly paranoid about the effects that the power plant is having on his health. Convinced that he has developed a brain tumor from working in such close proximity to the power plant, Jerry attempts to sabotage the plant. Unfortunately for Jerry, his brain is magnetized in the process. The next time Jerry goes to visit Mike at Be Kind Rewind, the powerful magnetization emanating from his brain erases every videotape in the store. Now the only way for Mike and Jerry to be sure that Be Kind Rewind stays in business is to remake every film on the shelves before the customers notice. But when word gets out that Mike and Jerry have remade such Hollywood classics as Back to the Future, Robocop, The Lion King, and Rush Hour without permission, the store is threatened with copyright violations and forced to close its doors. In the aftermath of the closing, Mr. Fletcher and his employees discover just how loyal their customers really are when the entire neighborhood pools their resources to transform the junkyard into a legitimate movie studio and produce an entirely original film detailing the incredible adventures of a local jazz legend. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body: Some more of my terribly far behind reviews...Fired Up is surprisingly funny for a PG-13 comedy. Two girl crazy football players decide to go to cheer camp instead of missing out on two weeks of action. The jokes come fast and are witty enough to avoid the R rating, but definitely push the PG-13 line. I had a lot of fun with this. Favorite bit: One kid: "Dude, she's like 30." Other kid: "That's how I like them - ancient and regretful."Adventureland is so good. It's like an 80's movie a la Pretty in Pink. Sadly, the ads pushed it as another Superbad and I think people are going to miss out on this. It is funny. I laughed out loud several times. I immediately fell in love with the soundtrack and the general mood of this film. A college graduate, home for the summer, can only land a job at a local amusement park where he falls in love and gets into all sorts of shenanigans. If it's still playing in your town, go see it. If not, rent it as soon as possible.Another film pitched as just a knee-slapping comedy, but turned out to be more is Be Kind Rewind. Two bumbling video store attendants erase all the tapes in the store and start recreating them to meet customer demand. It is often funny, but it's also about a community coming together for what it believes in. Very good.Based on the young adult book of the same name, Bridge to Terabithia made me cry. Two kids who don't fit in imagine their won world. And then tragedy. I enjoyed the look of the film, but the effects weren't great. I also felt that the moment of tragedy was just rushed through. Not a bad one, but not great either.Step Up 2: The Streets is a well-choreographed love story. A girl from a poor neighborhood, who has no formal dance training, gets a scholarship to the Maryland School of the Arts where she gets a group of dancers together to compete in a street competition. The characters and story are fun, but the real reason to watch this movie is the dancing. It's glorious. In the beginning, I was worried about the editing, but as the film progressed, the shots get longer and better. Loads of fun.
2008 was not the banner year that ‘07 turned out to be, but there were still plenty of movies worth watching. Sometimes end-of-year lists look like straight Oscar predictions, with little deviance from critic to critic, not so this year. Some of our favorite stuff was not playing in a theatre near you, some of it was. For the record, our complete lists are after the jump.
But first! Wholphin 7 is out now! The geniuses over at McSweeny’s have once again curated a delightful collection of rare and unseen short films. We share our thoughts about a few favorites. One film we both loved, Glory at Sea, is available for free here.

Body: My enjoyment of Be Kind Rewind was probably hampered by the fact that I watched it on an airplane. But even giving it the benefit of the doubt I have to say it was not very good. At least I didn’t quite get what Michael Gondry was going for with it.
I get the story - two local characters try to save a neighborhood video store when one of them somehow becomes magnetic and accidentally erases all the tapes by shooting their own versions of the movies and renting them to an unsuspecting clientele. But it’s the execution that gets in the way of my enjoyment. Black is mostly just annoying as the cause of the problems and Mos Def tries to be charming as the one who takes charage of the store’s revitalization but he’s just not that good an actor.
Plus, there’s this whole thing where occassionally the screen fills with static like Black’s magnetism is effecting the camera that’s shooting the movie and that wound up just bugging me the more often it happened. I have no problem with breaking the fourth wall but this little affectation served no purpose other than to make Gondry seem clever.
It’s not a bad movie, it’s just pointlessly amused with itself.

Body: Some critics are slamming director Michel Gondry’s sweet new slipstream comedy Be Kind Rewind for being excessively heartfelt and overly sentimental. I caught the film this weekend and was quickly wooed by its oddball humor, charming story about a neighborhood full of cuddly wackos, and warm message about the power of community spirit. Those hoping for a thematic sister film to Gondry’s 2004 drama Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (written by Charlie Kaufman) might be disappointed. Rewind wears its heart on its quirky sleeve, and it leaves little room for existential angst or scenes of heartbreak. Still, fans of Gondry’s narrow sense of humor and visionary music video work should find a lot to like in Be Kind Rewind. Most people reading this have no doubt seen the trailers with Mos Def, doing a great job playing a spacier version of his Ford Prefect from Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, and Jack Black remaking, or “sweding,” movies like RoboCop, Rush Hour 2 and Ghostbusters. The duo’s imaginative zero-budget remakes are an essential part of the film, but they don’t start making them until way after the twenty-minute mark. First, Gondry sets up a story about the gentrification of an historic - to its residents anyway - East Coast neighborhood. Mr. Freeman (Danny Glover) is forced to make expensive repairs to the building that houses his neighborhood video store. City hall threatens to demolish it and build condos on the site if he can’t bring the building up to code. Freeman takes a vacation to spy on a nearby Blockbuster-like franchise, hoping to ape the business model, and leaves Mos Def’s Mike in charge. Enter Jerry (Jack Black), Mike’s annoying, conspiracy theory-spouting buddy who lives next to the neighborhood power plant. Jerry gets himself zapped (with some cool lightning effects) and magnetized during a failed attempt to sabotage the power plant. Jerry’s newly magnetized body erases all the tapes in Freeman’s store, causing a desperate Mike to start remaking the store’s video catalog with a bulky, circa-1989 video camera. The remakes are hilarious and, although low-tech, endlessly creative. Mike and Jerry use fishing poles and tinsel to recreate the Ghostbusters’ proton streams, and saucy pizzas stand in for blood pools in their version of Boyz N Da Hood. The sweded movies are a testament to Gondry’s unlimited imagination and charming, singular visual style. (Check out his music video and TV work at Youtube). Mike and Jerry’s remakes are a hit with the neighborhood residents, who soon become part of their movie-making exploits. The creative projects unite the community and, spurred by the spirit of neighborhood jazz hero Fats Waller, the local Joes and Janes make a bid to reclaim the town from urban developers. The right kind of person, namely the movie buff, will probably go home loving this movie, especially for its bizarre Sesame Streettone, its championing of the dirty underdog, and the delightful performances by the main cast (especially Mos Def and Glover) and a funny Mia Farrow. Yup, Mia Farrow. Sigourney Weaver even pops up in the third act, a possible signal that the A-listers are lining up to work with Gondry. I’m looking forward to his next project, a true sci-fi film based on the Rudy Rucker novel Master of Space and Time. I’m not sure what to make of his idea for a sequel to Rewind, though. Review originally posted at SciFi Observer.</spout:body>

Body:
Hey I It was Simon that made that comment. I too am in agreement with you two. Jack Black does need to change his character in his upcoming films. I am glad to see we are getting feedback now from this site. We really do appreciate it. KEep in touch Ricky
It's my pleasure! For a while, the podcast feed wasn't updating in my iTunes, but that's fixed now. I think you're right though; Be Kind Rewind, in its advertising, casts itself as something it never really delivers on, instead offering something more. But when you go into a film expecting it to be about the re-made films, and it turns out to be more about a community coming together, its hard not to feel just a bit dissapointed.
Body: 1. Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay This is probably the worst movie I have seen in theatres in the last few years. I could not believe that this is what they decided to put out into the world. The first movie was hilarious and silly but this one is just awful. I maybe laughed twice. Maybe. 2. Iron Man I was pretty excited for it before the trailer and then was excited that they, obviously, used Black Sabbath's Iron Man in the trailer. Then when I saw the movie I keept feeling like Robert Downey Jr. was doing Dudley Moore who is doing a cabaret act for the entire film. I didn't so much laugh as I did snort. There were some okay action scenes but man, Jeff Bridges was a waste and Terrence Howards was an even bigger waste. Gwenyth Paltrow's performance was absolutely heinous. 3. Lady In The Water I wasn't insanely excited for this film nor was I waiting for the last possible second for a twist ending. I just thought, from the trailer, that it looked beautifully shot and pretty interesting. Well I was half right: beautiful stuff going on here with the grass wolf or whatever that was and the night time imagery was pretty cool but man was it boring and convoluted. I kept getting really annoyed by something new being introduced: "Hey, I forgot to tell you this part of the story...". Ugh, here we go again. 4. The Tiger's Tail I recently saw this for free (thankfully) at the independent theatre I work at. I was constantly bombarded by the trailer for weeks before we got the film and I thought it had an interesting premise. Well, yes the premise was interesting but it was so poorly executed I can't even begin to discuss it. The worst part of the film was casting Kim Catrall as an Irish woman. That accent is...just wow. Think Brad Pitt in the Devil's Own or Kevin Costner in anything that requires him to do an accent. 5. Be Kind, Rewind From the trailer I thought this movie was going to be really funny but it was just okay and sometimes plain irritating. Jack Black is always annoying (except in Kung Fu Panda, maybe that's a sign he should stick to voice work) and Mos Def got on my nerves on and off throughout the film. It had some sweet elements and it tried very hard but this film is pretty forgettable.
Body: The first time I saw the trailer for Be Kind Rewind I got super excited. My first reaction to it was, yes a movie with an awesome story that will inspire many a person's creativity, hopefully. My second reaction was YES A NEW MICHEL GONDRY FILM! I have been a fan of Michel Gondry ever since I first saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep. Be Kind Rewind has that DIY look that you would expect from a Gondry film. At times the camera seams to be on Jack Black just hoping that he does something crazy like in the scene where Jerry and Mike give their newly "sweded" rendition of Ghostbusters to Mia Farrow's character, the camera seams to be on Jack Black for a very long time, but in other parts of the film we get just the right amount of jack black. Mos Def's character is well done as well, he is a different character one that he doesn't play often he is more of a nervous guy then the calm cool guys that Mos usually plays. Michel Gondry makes you feel like the film takes place real life but it is also a place that you know doesn't exist even though you want it to. The sense of community that Gondry picked up while working on Black Party is present in this film and helps to create the warm feeling the Be Kind Rewind projects. If you haven't seen this movie GO NOW!
Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind may have failed to make much of an impact at the box office, but as Liz Shannon Miller reports at NewTeeVee, it did touch off a serious wave of low-budget remake making on the web. Of the three “Sweded” mini-masterpieces she considers, by favorite is the above take on An Inconvenient Truth. Watch it, and join the fight to keep polar bears from taking our jobs. Related: this plus The Pleasure of Being Robbed makes two recent works to employ use of a fake polar bear. I just have to find one more fake polar bear in popular culture, and I can pitch a trend piece to the New York Times! Originally posted on:SpoutBlog » karina
