Title: Masters of Horror: Incident on and off a Mountain Road
Year: 2006
Director: Don Coscarelli
Plot: The Showtime series Masters of Horror opens with Phantasm director Don Coscarelli's Incident on and off a Mountain Road, based on a short story by Joe R. Lansdale, who also wrote the story on which Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep was based. As the tale opens, Ellen is driving on the eponymous twisty and remote road in the middle of the night, when she takes her eyes off the road for a moment and plows into another car. Waking up a short time later, she goes to check the other car, and finds a trail of blood leading to the side of the road. She calls out to see if anyone needs help. It's soon apparent that someone does, and that someone is Ellen. There's a gruesome giant of a man (John De Santis) dragging another girl up toward the road, and Ellen quickly realizes that her life's in danger. She flashes back to the training she received from her boyfriend, Bruce (Ethan Embry), a survivalist who brought her to live with him in his cabin in the woods, and bullied her into learning how to defend herself. She runs into the woods, and sets a trap for the madman, injuring him, but this only seems to spur him on. Eventually, he catches up with Ellen and brings her back to his lair. There, she meets a demented elderly man in a wheelchair named Buddy (Angus Scrimm, the Tall Man from the director's Phantasm films), who explains that the madman must like something about her to let her live so long. Looking about the creepy abode, filled with the eyeless corpses of previous victims, Ellen can see for herself that her chances of surviving are not good. But she's determined to use everything Bruce taught her and get through this terrifying night. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
Body: I had a little Masters of Horror marathon with the Roku. It's a really amazing show. Genre directors do an hour long "episode," and it's on Showtime, so there's no holds barred scares, disturbing images and gore.It may seem weird to do reviews for episodes of a television series, but they felt like films. And I'm treating them as such. Except they're getting pretty short reviews. The first of my viewings was Fair Haired Child from director William Malone ("FeardotCom"). A girl is kidnapped and wakes trapped in a basement with a teenage boy. The two try to escape while discovering cryptic warnings carved into their prison. Tense and interesting with a good twist at the end.Sick Girl, from director Lucky McKee ("The Woods"), follows an entomologist as she finds true love and investigates a new species of insect. It's humorous and disgusting, much like McKee's films. I loved it.Cigarette Burns, from John Carpenter ("Ghosts of Mars"), is more about disturbing imagery and ideas than scares. And it delivers. A young man whose business is finding hard-to-find films is tasked with locating a print that makes viewers insane. Totally awesome.Pro-Life, also from Carpenter, features Ron Perlman ("Hellboy II: The Golden Army") as an extremist trying to break into an abortion clinic after his daughter checks in. But that's not the poor girl's only problem, her child is growing at an alarming rate. This one is bloody and very disturbing. Still well done.Despite a ridiculously long name, Incident On and Off a Mountain Road from director Don Coscarelli ("Bubba Ho-Tep"), starts off tense and then doesn't let up. A woman almost wrecks on a windy mountain road and then finds herself being terrorized by a monster. Another really excellent entry.
Body: Monster vs. Girl...guess who wins? Released: October 28, 2005Director: Don Coscarelli*****The theory behind the Masters of Horror series is to give directors like John Carpenter (Halloween), Joe Dante (Gremlins) and Coscarelli (formerly of Phantasm) an hour to scare the bejesus out of the audience on a weekly basis. Airing on Showtime ensured each director could make R-rated stories with cursing and sex without worrying about network censorship. All good, in theory. But whereas most horror films screw up by being too long and dragging out the plot, Incident On and Off a Mountain Road has the exact opposite problem: it's not long enough. When Ellen gets into an accident on a mountain road late one night, she is mercilessly stalked by a killer known as Moonface. In order to escape this deformed and deranged psycho, she has to rely on lessons her former husband taught her, building to a stunning climax. In a horror film, as with any linear film, events have to progress naturally from what we know of the characters. We wouldn't expect Ripley to slink into a corner and let the Alien Queen impregnate her at the end of Aliens; so how does Ellen morph from the typical scared heroine of this film into, basically, a cold blooded killer? It can be argued, based on the last five minutes, she was always a killer. Which then leads into a whole other set of questions, such as if she was a killer from the start, why did she act like Ms. Typical Horror Woman from the start? As horror movies go, this isn't anything we haven't seen before. Girl gets stalked, girl fights back, hand to hand combat, one or two gory scenes, a shocking ending no one expects...it's all taken from the horror script generator. Originally a thirteen page short story written by Joe Landsdale and optioned by Coscarelli for a full length treatment, Incident On and Off a Mountain Road would have benefited from a longer run time, if only to flesh out the character of Ellen a bit more. Does it need the full 90 or 120 minutes? No; utilizing the allocated 60 minutes for the film would have been enough. (spout.com) Originally posted on:TheMovieRambler’s blog
