Title: 30 Days of Night
Year: 2007
Director: David Slade
Plot: Hard Candy director David Slade took the helm for this adaptation of Steve Niles' terrifying comic-book series of the same name. In Barrow, AK, one night can last an eternity. One month every year, this town is plunged into darkness for 30 days due to its location on the far north of the Arctic Circle. While extended periods of darkness are something that the locals have become accustomed to, this year something sinister is about to emerge from the long and unforgiving night. As a maniacal horde of vampires assume control of the city streets and commence to freely feasting on the terrified citizens, the local sheriff (Josh Hartnett), his wife (Melissa George), and a small but resilient band of survivors will be forced to choose between saving themselves or helping the few remaining members of their community survive the blood-soaked siege. Original comic creator Niles collaborated with screenwriters Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson to pen a film produced under Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures banner. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body:
Please reference this thread for the rules of this group. Watchmen is coming out pretty soon, and up until last week I don't think I could ever say I'd read a graphic novel before. Someone lent me their copy of this book, and I'm actually only halfway through it still, but I'm really hooked. So for this poll I tried to pick movies that came strictly from graphic novels. For instance there were some I was originally going to add, but my research indicates that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book series and 30 Days of Night is a comic book mini-series. In the case of American Splendor I couldn't tell if these were "comic books" or "novels" (I haven't seen the movie either...) so I just left it off to keep the list as focused as possible. And as for anything Japanese or manga based, that's just another huge world that I might do another poll about later, but for now I didn't include anything from that. Sorry if I missed your favorite, but please feel free to discuss.
I had no idea that Ghost World and Road to Perdition were from graphic novels! Must not have paid close enough attention to the credits. When I first saw the subject of the poll, I thought "heck, I probably haven't seen any of these films." But turns out I've seen half of them. Had a hard time choosing between Perdition and Ghost World; both were impressive and well done. In the end it was mostly a coin toss. :-) I liked History of Violence all right, but V For Vendetta was too preposterous. The hero, in choosing Guy Fawkes as his alter-ego, isn't remembering or applying his history correctly. A friend and I argued about the film being romantic (she maintained it was; I said no one who tortures someone else, no matter what their motives, is being romantic).
Body: i think what grabbed me the most was the fact that all hell broke loose on the first night. A total massacre of a town. blood, screams, and sharp teeth. nearly everyone DEAD! and it was only the first night. so it became more of a small-town apacolyptic tale of bullying vampires. i thought it was a great film even though i'm not a huge fan of horror flicks. i loved the movie Hard Candy (2004) and when i saw that David Slade tackled this adaptation, i gave it a shot. and i'm greatful.
Body: One wonders why the vampires didn't think of it before: If you're a bloodsucker, the Arctic Circle is really the place to be. Some places have (as you can guess from the title) thirty days of night, meaning that our undead friends can spend an unlimited amount of time doing what vampires do. This is a great premise for a movie, but the end result is merely mediocre. The opening of the film is very strong, as it presents effectively a part of the United States that we rarely see on screen- the extreme northern parts of Alaska. The movie introduces us to a wide vary of semi-diverse characters led by a policeman named Eben (Josh Hartnett) and his estranged wife Stella (Melissa George). There is also a old policewoman dying from cancer, her unusually normal teenage grandson, an Inuit guy mourning the death of his wife and child, and strong, husky woodsman. When the vampires move in however, the drama and indeed, the story (as my literary friend Tracey observed) stops for a series of set pieces, that get tedious really fast, because the same thing happens over and over again. It's not that there are not moments that are effective. There is one genuinely creepy sequence in the movie- the initial moments of the vampire invasion, when they are never seen clearly and skirt quickly in and out of frame. Had the movie perused this strategy, only revealing the monsters at the end (a la the shark in Jaws) it might have been really effective, but the vampires stop being scary when you get used to them. As my friend also pointed out, there are numerous plot problems with the film. If these vampires want to feed on the town, why do the kill everyone all at once, instead of one at a time. How can the humans possibly evade them for thirty days? Since two characters keep their cell phones, why doesn't anyone call for help. Why doesn't anyone send for help after the town goes silent? Why do the vampires speak in a language that sounds like Klingon? But I am still moderately recommending this movie, because it is okay as a dumb weekend horror movie. But the premise was so good, and parts so impressive, it should have been the next great vampire film. 30 Days of Night (2007)
Body: No sunlight for a month. Cut off from the rest of the world. Below freezing temperature. Philosophically minded, bloodthirsty vampires? In 30 Days of Night, the forces that be sure are completely against the isolated town of Barrow that has found itself directly in the path of a wandering tribe of vampires. With stunning visuals that equal the incredible look of the comic book in which it was adapted and fantastically gory effects on par with Evil Dead, the sporadic plot holes and terribly cliched dialogue are easily forgiven.
