Title: Lady Vengeance
Year: 2005
Director: Park Chan-wook
Plot: A woman looks for both revenge and redemption after spending 13 years in prison in this offbeat thriller from South Korea. Lee Geum-ja (Lee Yeong-ae) was in her early twenties when she was found guilty of kidnapping and killing a young boy, and though she confessed to the crime under duress, while behind bars she dreamed of one day being able to clear her name -- and even the score with the people who railroaded her, including the police officer who brought her in (Nam Il-woo) and Mr. Baek (Choi Min-Sik), a teacher who wronged her in a number of ways. Lee Geun-ja teams up with a number of friends she made during her time in lock-up, including Woo So-yeong (Kim Bu-seon), a thief with a gunsmith for a husband; Oh Su-heui (Ra Mi-ran), who was saved from assault at the hands fellow inmates by Lee; and Preacher Jeon (Kim Byeong-ok), an eccentric man of the cloth who was struck by her gentle nature in jail. As Preacher Jeon helps Lee seek salvation for all she had to do while in prison, her other friends stand by her side as she gets even with her rivals and searches for the daughter she was forced to leave behind when she was convicted. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (aka Chinjeolhan Geum-ja-ssi) was the third film in a series, preceded by Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Old Boy. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: I’m writing this to take a moment and reflect on my past 6 months in film viewing. At the beginning of the year, I set a goal of watching 200 films I haven’t previously seen in 2009. Today, I am relieved to report that with the 6th month of the year ending, I have just finished watching my 100th film. I decided to create a list of the films I’ve seen so I could better keep track of them. Also, because this is an attempt to expand my film knowledge as a whole, I like to be able to sort them by release year, my rating, and the country the originated. This way I can more clearly see any gaping holes in my choices of films. So with all of that in mind, let’s take a look. The oldest film I’ve seen this year was 1947’s Out of the Past. I have to say, I’m kind of disappointed in myself. I think I generally gravitate towards older films but to see that this is the oldest I’ve seen this year is somewhat shocking. I've only seen 2 films from the 40s this year. By Decade:1940s - 2 films 1950s - 10 films 1960s - 12 films 1970s - 12 films 1980s - 7 films 1990s - 1 film 2000s - 56 films So, as you can see, over half of the movies I've watched this year have been released in the within the past 9 years. I would chalk some of that up to availability plus a general attempt to stay current and up to date. I did find it pretty odd that I have only seen one film this year from the 90s. (To Live 1994) I grew up in the 90s, I fell in love with film in the 90s. Maybe that well is simply drying up. So in summary, the rest of my year needs to include more films from the 40s and prior and a few more from the 90s. By Country: Australia - 1 film Belgium - 1 film China - 3 films Czechoslovakia - 1 film France - 4 films Germany - 1 film Italy - 4 films Japan - 11 films Mexico - 2 films Romania - 1 film South Korea - 3 films Spain - 3 film Sweden - 1 film United Kingdom - 3 films United States - 61 films. Okay, so again it seems that the majority of films I've seen are some of the most readily available (domestic). Interestingly also, the 11 Japanese films I've seen this year are from only 3 directors (Miike, Suzuki and Kurosawa) 6 of the 11 are Seijun Suzuki movies. I love his films and I'm not going to stop watching them. I discovered Argentinian filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowski films this year (Mexico), thanks to Mycomplex. The Holy Mountain was good but I loved El Topo. Of the 4 Italian films I watched, 3 were from Federico Fellini (La Dolce Vita, Amarcord and La Strada) My favorite of the 3 and of all Fellini films is now La Strada. I watched the other 2 films in Park Chan-Wook's vengeance trilogy and I actually think Lady Vengeance may be the best of the 3. Last year, I devoted much more time to European film without much of an affinity for Asian cinema. This has changed this year. I am much more interested in Korean films lately. I think it just took me a little while to assimilate myself to thier style. I have also been able to scratch a few films off my "Classics I have no excuse for not having seen" list. I am now very happy to report that I have seen and enjoyed Vertigo, Sunset Boulevard and 12 Angry Men. Wow, that's embarrassing. Especially with the 12 Angry Men, but let me explain.... (excuse alert) I was always pretty convinced I would love this film. But when I am already that familiar with an iconic film that I've never actually seen, it takes a lot to want to actually put it on and sit through it. That being said, upon finally watching it, I immediately felt pretty stupid for letting such an incredible film slip by for that long. Notable 5: I'm going to conclude this post with a list of 5 films that I probably had the best time with so far this year. 1. La Strada - This is my most recent viewing. I've liked other Fellini films but none of his had such an enjoyable character as Gelsomina. I think she gave this film an entry point that I haven't previously experienced with his films. 2. Synecdoche, New York - I can't really describe how much I loved this film. It hit all the right notes for me and I probably only understood about half of it the first time. Monty (Mycomplex) told me that Charlie Kaufman may be the best American screenwriter alive today and I would have to second that. I would add that as much as I loved his work portrayed by Jonze and Gondry, I think this is his best film. He never over-exaggerated the outrageous things that happen, he just let them play out. Never even asking you if you were on board. 3. Let The Right One In - You know, the teenage vampire movie.... No, not that one, the good one. I don't have a lot to say about this one. It really is as good as you've heard. If you haven't yet, watch it. 4. Detective Bureau 2-3: Go Hell Bastards - By far, the best title of a movie I've seen in a long time. This is one of Seijun Suzuki's lesser known movies and I had one hell of a good time with it. If you liked Branded to Kill or Tokyo Drifter, this is a great watch along those same lines. 5. Lady Vengeance - As I said before, this is probably my favorite of the Vengeance Trilogy. It was just as aesthetically brilliant as Oldboy but I think it's 3rd act gave this film the heart that was missing in the previous 2. Well, that should just about do it. I now have just about 186 days to watch another 100 films. In case your not to good with the numbers, that works out to an average of 1 film every 1.86 days. I'm not sure how I'm gonna do it but it shall be done. Recommendations are more than welcome...... Peace & Love Emery.
Body: Oldboy was not bad. Not bad at all. If you can stand a lot of violence, and a general tone of nastiness and some fairly disgusting goings on(including the scene where he eats a live octopus in a single take), than it's actually very good. I've seen only 2 films in this Vengeance Trilogy(they aren't sequels, they just all deal with revenge), this and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. I enjoyed Lady Vengeance a lot more than Oldboy. Still, recommended, and it's nastiness is much deeper and more meaningful than current torture porn flicks. You should check out Audition, which takes awhile to get going, but is totally worth it. I screamed aloud like a little girl at one point in this movie, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Just don't watch the trailer, it gives too much away. Pulse, and Cure(both by Kyoshi Kurosawa) are really damn good, but very vague. Still, he grasps the melancholy aspect of ghosts and horror better than any other director I've seen. Of course, if your just looking for fun times, Uzumaki is a pretty odd, comic-book-inspired Lovecraftian movie with some gnarly makeup effects. And to get off the topic of Asian horror films, Riget(Kingdom), by Lars Von Trier, is one of the most awesome, scary, and just plain cool things I've ever seen. It's a couple of Danish television miniseries' and so far I think the second one is unavailable in the US. It's about Denmark's most technologically advanced hospital, and the cracks that are appearing between our world and the spirit world. The patients know something is wrong, but the doctors are oblivious to anything outside of medical science. The first hour is dry, setting up all the characters and their little dramas, but the second episode goes deeper into the occult, and it never looks back. It was remade in America by Stephen King as Kingdom Hospital, but I wouldn't recommend you check that out. Not even taking into account what it changed, it was just a shitty series. Be prepared for a cliffhanger. It was supposed to have a third miniseries, but Lars Von Trier went off to do other things, and now several of the main characters are dead. According to him thats the end of that.
Body: i saw real fiction by Kim-Ki Duk and i was not impressed compared to his other works;I guess its because the camerawork onthe movie seemed low budget;Anyway i just did not get the same feel for this movie compared to bad guy, samaritan girl(disturbingly great), the bow(visually great with minimal dialogand lots of symbolism), and 3-iron(quietly original and concientious trespasser that finds romance in a most unusual way)Just saw The Host this evening and i thought it was JUST decently ok.There was some funny parts on the movie that i did not expect; It is interesting though how the family of the girl that was taken by the monster pretty much bonds together to rescue the girl:The family bonds together even with the odds against them;Odds against the govt. that does not believe them or lies to them ,and people that decieve them for reward money; The bravest of the family is the father that would do the craziest, and sometimes the dumbest thing against all odds to rescue his daughter. It is also pretty ironic that the govt.could not kill the mutant monster or did not really try hard enough or was very disorganized in their effort to kill the mutant.I do not think that the orange gas killed the mutant, probably just sedated it or harmed it a bit;It is the familys(with an unexpected help from a vagrant) old fashioned techniques(gas, arrow and fire) that have killed the mutant monsterI saw parts of R-Point on tv ;I have to see it again completely to have a better perspective on the movieSympathy for Lady Vengeance is on my rental queue, i will let you know what i think after i have seen it ;Another Park-chan Wook film /short i have seen is "cut" from the three extremes. In the closing or conclusion part of the cut,was the piano woman her mistress or wife.Who was the woman calling to the director (at the end)wife or mistress? Was the woman calling to the director (at the end ) real or just the directors imagination? The last short film from the three extremes flick is "Box ".Whats your interpretation of "box"I will be on the lookout(keep looking) for A bittersweet life,BY luck i might find it showing on tv(ifc, sundance, etc.)Have you ever seen a movie called H (2002) directed by Jong-hyuk Lee? I am curious about this flick;Let me know your insight about this flick if you have seen it;THanks
Body: Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Busy lately. I'll try to do better in the future. The only film I've seen so far by Kim-Ki Duk is Bad Guy. I thought it was very interesting but didn't really go where I was hoping. I'll have to rent Samaritan Girl to see how that is.I'm very excited to get The Host on 7/24 especially since they are releasing it on HDDVD. That is an amazing film.I'm not sure why A Bittersweet Life isn't out in America yet. It is such an amazing film. I got it through Ebay. That is where I get alot of films that are not available in America yet. My second favorite Park-chan Wook film is Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. The style, characters and story progression is amazing. Have you seen R-Point? It is a pretty good ghost story. I expected it to be better but it was still pretty good.
Body: 8 1/2 out of ten stars. Lee Yeoung-ae who is a soap opera star in her native South Korea gives an outstanding performance as a young women imprisoned for a crime she did not necessarily commit. This film shows Park Chan-Wook coming of age in his use of music (damnit where can I get a copy of that exquisite score. . . and yes, I've tried YesAsia and it is sold out, double damnit). And of his shot choice, each scenes seems to meld into the next without a blink of this viewer's eye. The Region Three DVD I rented though was a bit muddy in the darker scenes but it is a slight quibble. The film along with a number of others recently seems to be the start of an avalanche of revenge genre films coming out of South Korea (I wonder what that says!) That said, great overall, though you may be leaving the room during the penultimate scene, where (SPOILER) each of the parents take their revenge on the real murderer.
