Title: Marmalade Boy [Anime Series]
Year: 1994
Plot: Miki's life can't get more complicated when her parents come home from vacation and announce that while they were gone, they met another couple who they each fell in love with a member of --so they'll be switching partners! On top of their impending divorce and remarriages, they decide that the two families should all live together, much to Miki's objections. Miki is still reeling from the idea of her family unit imploding when they drop another bomb on her: her new step parents have a son named Yuu, who is cool, funny, and devastatingly handsome. Yuu is calm and nonchelant, even with his own life turned upside down, and Miki finds herself alternately repelled by his teasing, too-cool-for-school attitude, and attracted to his sweet, sensitive side. Miki's romantic feelings for Yuu are almost worse than her frustrations with him, because no 14 year old is prepared to share a house (and a bathroom!) with her crush. Just when things look like they can't get any more complicated, Miki's longtime friend Ginta notices the chemistry between the two, and his jealousy inspires him to confesses that he has romantic feelings for her. Soon the shoujo love-dodecahedron reaches full force, as gradeschool sweehearts, teacher-student affairs and long-lost loves enter the picture. Marmalade Boy lasted for 76 episodes before the love lives of its characters finally reached resolution. The title comes from an early episode in which Miki compares Yuu to a jar of marmalade: partly bitter and partly sweet. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide
Body: Well, I thought this would be appropriate since it's Valentines Day. What are your favorite mushy or cheesy romance anime? Or what is your favorite couple from any anime series? Or what is something else you want to discuss related to anime and romance? I think most romantic anime have a sense of cheesiness to them. I love how a girl will be confessing her feelings towards a boy, and all of a sudden random cherry blossoms will fly up behind them out of nowhere. XD Or when random bubbles and sparkles appear around someone when they are talking about their love. One really cute anime that I think is good for Valentines Day watching is Lovely Complex. It's about a very tall girl and a very short boy who initially hate each other, but of course end up falling in love, creating quite the odd couple. It actually has a couple Valentines episodes in it, making it the perfect series to watch today. Another great romance series is Peach Girl. It's about a girl who has to overcome a deceitful copy-cat friend to find her true love by choosing between the two guys she likes. I don't remember any Valentines specifc episodes, but it's cheesy romance at it's best, mixed in with a bit of humor. ^^ If you don't mind an older animation style with a slightly cheaper budget, then Marmalade Boy is a great romance series. I actually haven't seen the whole anime (the animation isn't the most high-quality anyways), but the manga is amazing at least. It's about a girl named Miki who's parents decide to divorce and marry another couple who has also just divorced, essentially switching partners. To make matters even more complicated, they all decide to move into one house, along with the teenage son of the couple her parents are marrying. Miki soon falls for their son, and has to choose between him and her old crush Ginta, as well as face other problems with her dysfunctional family.
Body: I feel that subs are better because in most shows they take out the most violent parts when they dub them and it screws up the entire series makin people think that its just a little kid show with no violence or any adult humor at all
Body: I agree with you about the animation thing. It's really annoying when all the characters look the same. And the same with the background thing. Marmalade Boy has a bad case of terrible looking backgrounds, and animators being lazy, especialy during the tenis playing sequences. It's a shame because it has a really good plot, the manga is one of my favorites. As for the voice actors, I love it when i recognize a characters voice! But maybe that's because i'm a rabid voice actor fangirl ^^;; When I find out that my favorite voice actor is playing so-and-so it makes me want to watch the series all the more.
