Title: The Reaping
Year: 2007
Director: James Cox, Stephen Hopkins
Plot: Her faith shaken by a family tragedy from which she was never quite able to fully recover, a professor of theology from Louisiana State University moonlighting as a debunker of unexplained religious phenomena finds herself faced with an apocalyptic series of events that seem to reflect the ten plagues of Exodus in director Stephen Hopkins' Southern gothic chiller. The terrified citizens of Haven, Louisiana have been beset by swarms of locusts and watched as rivers turned to blood. As if that wasn't enough to put the fear of God into any Bible-reading Christian, ominous rumors of a local swamp cult have left many of the small town citizens turning to prayer for fear that the end is finally nigh. Enter Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank), a skeptical myth-buster and renowned theology scholar with a special knack for spotting religious trickery. Though at first exceedingly confident that she will uncover a human component behind the otherworldly occurrences, Katherine quickly learns that just because one doesn't believe in the supernatural doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't exist. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body: 5:54 - Here comes director James McTeague, Naomi Harris, and… “arch rival of Stephen Colbert….RAIN!”
“Wow, it’s like mini-Twilight” someone says behind us when people start screaming for Rain.
5:51 - Now they’re on to Ninja Assassin, and when Joel Silver says the name “Rain” people go nuts. Although not quite the level of Twilight nuts that we witnessed earlier. Here’s a clip that Silver tells us is “Just for Comic-Con, so lets not talk about it to anyone else.”
“Raised to be a warrior…Trained to be a killer.” Scenes of kids training, teenagers training, adults shedding tons of blood with knives. This movie is all done in red and black, even with red and black washing machines in a laundromat scene. Someone cue the Les Miserables soundtrack. Ninjas, swords, explosions, car chases… I don’t really know what this is about, but there’s a lot of screaming and flying blood.
The ninja chucks a Chinese star at the screen, which turns into a little embellish between the words Ninja and Assassin in the logo.
5:50 - Now Silver is pimping out Whiteout, which we saw a lot of at last year’s Comic-Con. he basically tells us it stars Kate Beckinsale and Alex O’Loughlin from Moonlight, although “sadly, that’s over now.” They also have a movie called The Factory coming out, with John Cusack. “It’s a thriller, like Silence of the Lambs” according to Silver, and it’ll be out sometime in 2010.
5:46 - Writer Marc Andreyko and artist Jonathan Wayshak take the stage along with Erik Olsen again, to talk about the book, which hits stands in October. Will there be a movie version of Ferrymen? “That’s up to you guys!” says Erik. Based on the audience response, which is basically nil, I’d say that we won’t be seeing a Ferrymen movie anytime soon.
5:43 - Joel Silver is back to tell us about the Dark Castle comic book label that they’ve formed in conjunction with DC Comics’ Wildstorm imprint. They have their first book coming out called The Ferrymen, which they are about to show us a trailer for.

“Sell your soul to the devil, and there will be Hell to pay.” is the tagline for the book, written by Marc Andreyko, who co-wrote the brilliantly creepy Torso with Brian Michael Bendis.
5:41 - Erik Olsen, Sophie Monk, Tad Hilgenbrick, and John Carchiette take the stage to talk about the film. Sophie Monk wants everyone to know “There’s some seriously twisted stuff in this movie that I wouldn’t want my dad to see.”
No one asks any questions, ouch. Even though Sophie also tells us “I got so comfortable being covered in blood that I actually started going to the supermarket like that.” That’s method acting, folks. She also sings the creepy lullaby at the beginning of the trailer.
5:38 - Here’s a clip from The Hills Run Red, it opens with someone singing “Hush little baby, don’t say a word…” just so you know it’ll be creepy.
Razor blades, buckets of blood, naked girls, a creepy guy in a mask. It’s Horror Formula 101. Coming to DVD in 2009.
5:35 - Joel Silver pops on out stage, all chubby, sweaty, and swarthy. He’s telling us how geek movies aren’t the “bastard stepchild” of the movies anymore. “Those pictures you just saw have made about a billion dollars. And we’ve decided to broaden out the label to do other types of movies.”
Direct to video movies, that is: Return To House On Haunted Hill was last year, and this year is The Hills Run Red.
5:33 - They’re rolling out a clip reel to show us the “history of Dark Castle.” It’s a bunch of creepy movie scenes…there’s Thirteen Ghosts, Ghost Ship, Gothika, House of Wax, The Reaping…Creeptastic. A person sitting nearby says “Wow, they really make their company look a lot more exciting than it actually is. Originally posted on:SpoutBlog
Body: Released: April 5, 2007Director: Stephen Hopkins*****Sometimes, an Oscar winner headlining a B-movie is a good thing. The personae lends credibility to the production, allowing the audience a certain amount of leeway in enjoying a middling concept. Such is the case with The Reaping, a vehicle for Hilary Swank as a professor who debunks supposed Biblical miracles using science. It is because of Swank (and, to a lesser extent, and co-stars David Morrissey and Idris Elba) that the films manages to be anything but laughable. It's not without it's perks, though. The first 30 to 45 minutes stand up rather well as an unconventional who-dun-it, giving us a sense of small town, Southern folk. Even the locations and sets turn out to be well designed and thought out. Shot in location in Louisiana, everything feels authentic to the setting, allowing us to become almost comfortable here. I'd even go on to say the first half-The Reaping only runs 99 minutes-is fairly competent storytelling. Then the entire bottom drops out, plunging us into a flashback prone, special effects disaster with a hopeless resolution and ending leaving us scratching our heads. Why is that? To be perfectly honest, the film forgets it's own internal logic. Katherine (that's Swank) spends all her time telling people why what they think are Biblical events are explained by science. This is her work, her passion...all of which is summarily thrown out the window thanks to some haunting warnings from a priest-friend who is never developed past the point of plot contrivance. The Reaping goes wrong as it tries to delve deeper into it's own internal reality, stringing together too many subplots which come crashing together with no panache...no subtlety in the final 20 minutes or so. What does it add to Katherine's character to give her a religious background or a dead family? Not a whole lot, except to explain her skepticism a little girl from the swamp is evil incarnate. And about those flashbacks? They come in such a slipshod, herky jerky manner it's nearly impossible to figure out what's going on in them unless a character actually explains. When it comes to the information we need to get to the conclusion with Katherine, it all seems to be a blur. The sudden left turn the story takes in the final act jars any sense of reality out of it. In a film comprised of science and explainable phenomenon, to introduce a satanic, other worldly element which really doesn't belong destroys what the narrative is trying to do. Fireballs falling out of the sky, landing on very specific targets may be Biblical, but it's not feasible. Especially when, previously, Katherine tells us exactly why certain things can't happen. It's a tale of two movies, slapped together in the middle without regard for thematic continuity. Do the fireballs falling out of the sky make Katherine believe again, after turning her back from religion? Or does she simply believe in the supernatural power of evil in the end?
I loved that book, I read it a really long time ago, back when Crichton was super cool after Jurassic Park:)
Body: As a lot of you know, I'm not the best writer when it comes to writing Reviews, but I just like to say what I feel. I think the Reaping was a really good movie. I think it could have been better but I really enjoyed it. It had a pretty good story and a nice unexpected ending. I thought Hillary Swank did a great job (of course she usually always does even in her days of Sometimes they come Back Again) she's a great actor. I probably wouldn't characterize this as a horror movie, more like a mystery, but it had a lot of suspense and a creepy little girl (and scary religious people in a way). It kept me interested through the movie to see what was going to happen next...
Body: Well, I really wanted to see The Reaping because I love rivers of blood and biblical plagues. And Hilary Swank ("P.S. I Love You"). And the film had all three of those things. Sometimes atmospherically creepy and sometimes jump scary, the plot was just a bit too thin. Swank plays a professor who specializes in debunking religious mysteries. She's called in to investigate what seems to be a series of biblical plagues affecting a small town. She has a past of a terrible event where she lost her faith. Stephen Rea ("Stuck") is a priest and former friend who tires to warn her she's in danger. Though some of this is pretty cool, I could see where it was going before it went there. For Christmas, my husband got me Masters of Horror: Joe Dante - The Screwfly Solution as a companion piece to Season 3 of 90210, both staring the fabulous Jason Priestley ("Made in Brooklyn"). I had not watched any of the Masters of Horror series before, and so I wasn't really sure what to expect. It's sort of twilight zoney. Priestley and Elliot Gould ("The Deal") are scientists called in to try and figure out why men all over the world are suddenly and viciously attacking women. The pacing is pretty good and there's some good creep factor. But it's more sci-fi than horror. Still, I'm interested to see more of this series.Away from Her is gorgeous and depressing. I pretty much had tears in my eyes from the beginning until the end. The desolateness of the story is reflected beautifully in the scenery. Good job for writer/director Sarah Polley in her full length debut, though it sometimes reminded me of a film in which she starred, The Sweet Hereafter. Julie Christie ("The Secret Life of Words") stars as a woman developing Alzheimer's. She wants to go live in a home so as not to be too much of a burden on her husband, played by Gordon Pinsent ("The Sparky Book"). The film takes us through the decision, her placement in the home and how both husband and wife react to the new situation. It's heartbreaking.
It's heartbreaking.</spout:body>

Body: I thought that The Reaping was a good movie. I heard that Roeper and some guest on his show gave it two thumbs down so now I think they're dumb. This movie was interesting and really had me guessing. It wasn't like the most intricate mystery movie but I did not expect it to go the way it did. It was not really scarey like horror movie scarey but it did make me jump a few times which is what I think they were going for. It was pretty intense and definitley had my attention. I was thoroughly entertained and would recommend this movie.
Body: I thoroughly emjoyed the movie. It has an unpredictable ending. It is like turning you 180ndegrees from what you were expecting. It was questioning your faith, and what was it really all about. Was it about Katherine or the town or the girl ?It kept me guessing to the end.It is a great movie specially with Hilary swank in it!!!See it!
