Title: Doom
Year: 2005
Director: Andrzej Bartkowiak
Plot: One of the most popular and influential video games ever makes its way to the big screen in this sci-fi thriller. A coalition of Earth's scientific and military interests have established a research colony called Olduvai on the planet Mars, but one day all communication from the outpost stops and no one can tell what has happened -- though the final messages suggest it's not good. Believing foul play may have overtaken Olduvai's crew, the Rapid Response Tactical Squad, a team of specially trained military personnel, are deployed to investigate the situation and, if necessary, eliminate the invaders. But Sarge (Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock) and Reaper (Karl Urban), leaders of the RRTS team, soon discover the situation is far more grim than they could have imagined. An experiment on Olduvai has very literally opened a portal to Hades, and a variety of savage and demonic creatures have overtaken the colony. Now the RRTS must seal off Olduvai, close off any access to Earth, and exterminate the satanic beasts before they can kill again. Doom also stars Rosamund Pike (as Dr. Grimm), Dexter Fletcher, Ben Daniels, and Deobia Oparei. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: There really is no demand for a sequel to Street Fighter, the video game-to-film adaptation that had the sad distinction of being Raul Julia’s final film. And while the franchise is alive and well through parody (College Humor’s Street Fighter: The Later Years) and a fourth–technically 15th–videogame spin-off, one must stop and wonder: who the hell cares?
Now we have Kristin Kreuk, best known for being a damsel on Smallville, emerging for her first feature film lead role as Chun-Li! (You know, the one who does the kicks and turns herself upside down while spinning like a helicopter? No? Fine, nevermind.) The trailer is in Japanese, but allow us to translate for you: her family was killed by an evil organization (Shadowlaw) run by M. Bison (Raul Julia before, now…Neal McDonough?) and she’s going to get revenge with the help of her wacky sidekicks and CGI energy blasts. Not to mention obscene Wire-Fu and generic dramatic music.
At least Andrzej Bartkowiak is no stranger to dumb, silly video game flicks.

Last week, I followed a link from Fimoculous to Wired’s GameLife, where blogger Chris Baker attempted to quell the anti-Roger Ebert sentiment in the game community by posting a game review written by Ebert for the magazine. If you just read that sentence and immediately asked yourself, “What anti-Roger Ebert sentiment in the video game community?” … well, let me back up a bit.
In 2005, Ebert fired the first of several shots in what appears to have been an accidental battle, by admitting to never having played the video game that inspired the movie Doom. A reader named Vikram Keskar wrote in with an extremely well-articulated letter of protest:
Doom works as a tribute because it fails so utterly as a movie. There is a reason so many video game-based movies suck: They are fundamentally different forms of representation. Thus by being faithful to the game, the movie pisses off the critic and pleases the gamer.
…to which Ebert rather flippantly responded:
Seen as a moviegoing experience, [Doom] was not a good one. There are specialist sites on the Web devoted to video games, and they review movies on their terms. I review them on mine. As long as there is a great movie unseen or a great book unread, I will continue to be unable to find the time to play video games.

Body: DOOM **rated R (strong violence/gore & language)1 hr. & 40 min.directed by: Andrzej Bartkowiakwritten by: David Callaham & Wesley StrickLast week some of the fellas and I went out to the Tuesday night $5.00-free parking-free popcorn special at our local theatre. Parked our brains and watched the latest sci-fi video game translation to screen. You gotta know what you're goin' into when you make the decision to see these types of flicks. It cracks me up when people gripe and complain that a movie like DOOM was rotten. I mean that's one of the reasons trailers exist, so you can kinda make up yer mind, ya know? (My wife and I make it a tradition to do the whole thumps up/thumps down review after each trailer when we're at the movies.) When I first saw the trailer, I thought, "Ah, looks just okay but fun. I'll check it out with the fellas," and that's exactly what happened. For those of you who have no idea what DOOM is or about or never played the classic FPS video game (which really is pretty creepy!) here's the deal: Communication with researchers within the Olduvai station on Mars has gone mysteriously dead. From the desperate sound of the last scrambled message from the research facility received....life on the red planet doesn't look so good. Of course this warrants an investigation by the most elite strike force team man has ever assembled, right? Mmhmmm. Okay, so some hideous creatures with apparent ties to the facility's genetic testing (why? why is it always about genetic testing?) is loose up there and killing off whomever. Enter the RRTS (Remote Response Tactical Squad), the uber-Marines that get to the bottom of this mystery with the help of their massive weaponry. The nightmares the team encounters as they search around every dark tunnel are nothing compared to what type of horrific work they discover has occured all in the name of science. Nevertheless, their job is simple: seal off the portal to Earth and make sure nothing gets out alive. Simple. Maybe that's what the creators of this movie thought. Take a popular video game and make it into a blockbuster movie. Sounds good. I'm sure it sounded good to Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo for the Super Mario Bros. movie back in 1993 too. Heh. Okay, I'll be fair. DOOM wasn't as bad as that mistake but it didn't feel like it was giving me a new perspective from the game or anything anti-formulaic. I'm not gonna be too critical of the movie cuz, as I mentioned above, I knew what I was going into when I bought my ticket. I knew it was based on a video game and I knew it gonna be kinda like Aliens. I knew all that and I was fine to expect just that....you see that way if there's anything new and original about the movie, I can be pleasantly surprised. The obligatory introduction scenes of characters in a movie should give the viewer some type of investment in the actors you'll be watching throughout the film. This can be done in many ways but in this film we first see Sarge (The Rock) sitting at his computer shirtless in all the Rock's muscle-bound glory with a wide Semper-Fi tattoo stretched across his upper back. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Sarge and Karl Urban as Reaper in Universal Pictures' Doom - 2005 This scene got a wave of laughter in the theater. Probably cuz we all thought, "What other way are they gonna introduce a tough-as-nails Marine played by The Rock?" I'm not making fun of The Rock here. I like him. I think he's a decent actor (more on that in a bit). I suppose in these types of round-up-the-troops-we-gotta-a mission type of movies, there's not gonna be a whole lotta character revelation right away. Although, we do see that there is something to Reaper's (Karl Urban of LOTR) past and it's somehow tied to that facility up there on Mars. Once the team arrives at the station on Mars there's exposition dialogue informing us what's going on and giving away the soldiers character quirks. We're also introduced to the only female lead character, Dr. Grimm (Rosamund Pike of Die Another Day) and we find out she has a connection to the mysterious Reaver....they're twins! After their parents died mysteriously on an archaeological dig on Mars, she became a bio genetic doctor and he became a Marine. One learns how about life and the other learns how to end it. You can see where there might be some friction between them. While Sarge and the other soldiers are running around blasting creatures away, getting freaked out, and for some (of course) dying, we see these two characters develop into something interesting. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with a blow-em-up movie with no character development. It's just nice to see it here. Although the movie is filled with scenes, characters, and locations I feel we've seen in other movies, there are still some elements I got a kick out of and found interesting and entertaining. I already said I enjoyed the sibling relationship of the two Grimms but I also wanna not that Urban's and Pike's acting kinda carries the movie moreso than The Rock's role. The just have more interesting layers to work with. But The Rock (kinda like Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan) does what he can with the writing given to him. As I mentioned before I think he's a decent actor that we will see stretch in the future which is revealed in the ending twist. He's got a great range of _expression (as seen in Peter Berg's The Rundown) and coming from the world of wrestling, I think he's got a better theatrical grasp then Arnold did when he started out. There's also a kinda wacky, cool space-porting travel device where an individual lets this silvery, reflective blob thingy envelope them and then shot out to space to Mars (and/or back to Earth). While I enjoyed elements of DOOM, it still wasn't enough to give it a higher rating. The formulaic sending in of the elite soldier due to dire straits has been done before and better. And the scientific whoop-dee-doo theory of these creatures having an extra pair of chromosomes making them superhuman and blah blah blah just wasn't enough for me to care. Overall, it was just a fun night out with the fellas watching control-free video game with a bunch of other people on a giant screen.
</spout:body>

Spout Post: Surprisingly much more then a mediocre action flick!

Body: Let me start by saying I have only played a little of the doom franchise, most notably Doom 3. So writing this review I won't be heavily relating it towards the games, as I don't know that much about them to compare. I will say that I heard a lot of negative feedback about this flick and that I don't feel like it's getting the recognition it deserves. I also feel that once a game franchise is made into movies it more often then not carries with it an unfair disadvantage. Let me start by saying Doom is much more then just a sci-fi action flick, it touches on so many well rounded themes that really get over shadowed by the fact it is a "video game movie, staring a former pro wrestler". If you look into the story arc you will find a plethora of deep and intriguing elements. One of the most dominant themes in the story follows the concept of mans endless need for technology and science, which ultimately in this movie unlocks a hellish nightmare. There's a lot to be said about this concept of science and how it may someday lead to the end of mankind, how far is too far, can the balance between science and faith be kept equal? Speaking of faith, the religious theme is strong throughout the movie, especially seen in the character the Goat, who is a walking icon for both Christianity and the argument for faith over science. This gets even trickier once this character faith fails him and he is ultimately "converted" into one of the demons. I could right a ten-page review over that theme alone, luckily for you I wont, but what I will say is that is a damn interesting sub plot to dive into. There's more too, what about that concept of hierarchy and unlimited devotion to your government that is contrasted by the two main characters, one of which is played by the Rock who did a superb job with his character. Granted at times there was a fair share of corniness that I could have done without. I would have rather seen more demonic hellish creatures that the run of the mill zombie feel they threw in for the majority of the movie. The first person perspective towards the end of the movie was cool for those who played the game, but it was a little too long for my taste. Ultimately I think this movie deserves much more credit then what it seems to get. If you are sitting down for cheap thrills and gore, yea that’s there and you should find your fix. But for those of us who like to sit down knit-pick about movies and stories, there is so much underneath the radar you could have a field day picking them out. It's unfortunate that I think a lot of people won't pick up on the deeper meanings.
