Body: The Dark Knight I’m finally writing about The Dark Knight. So much has been blogged about this movie since years before it came out, to the massive avalanche of advertising well before the release date of the film, through the record breaking box office attendance, and still in its aftermath and upcoming award season. It’s kind of overwhelming, and I’m not sure I have anything new to say for anyone who really cares about the movie at all. Yeah Heath stole the show. It’s sad that he’s dead since it seemed like there wasn’t much resolution for the Joker character and they were probably originally intending on bringing him back in a sequel. But apart from the Heath’s performance, the rest of the film wasn’t much more impressive to me than Batman Begins which did not blow me out of the water the way it did for many people. But I never expected it to. Christopher Nolan’s take on the world of Batman is a very realistic one. It was extremely strange to see so many familiar parts of Chicago, the city I live in, on the screen with Batman running around, especially since nothing was covered up or glossed over. It basically looked like a real, dirty street without any of this comic book stylizing that has been so popular recently like in Frank Miller’s Sin City or 300 for extreme examples. But I just can’t accept a realistic Batman. I’ve always said Adam West was my favorite Batman and “real comic book fans” usually think I’m joking or are appalled. The producer on that show thought comic books were silly and played up the campy aspects. Well that’s the way I enjoy them too. I was actually at a bar last night celebrating my girlfriend’s birthday with some of our friends, and one of the TVs was playing the old Adam West Batman movie. Now that’s fun! And when they pull out that Bat Shark Repellent you can laugh at it and say boy that’s silly, what fun! But in The Dark Knight when they invent this device that lets them create some kind of remote 3-D model of the real world by somehow using people’s cell phones, they act like you are supposed to believe it!!! I’m not saying that The Dark Knight wasn’t fun, I’m just saying maybe that’s all a Batman movie should try to be (in my opinion)… Rating: 7/10
Body:
If John McCain doesn’t become the next President of the United States, perhaps he could take a completely different sort of gig, as The Penguin in the next Batman movie. Of course, there’s already a worthy candidate for that role, too, but if Philip Seymour Hoffman doesn’t want the job, Christopher Nolan should give it to the senator. That is, if Nolan actually decides to include the villain in his next installment, and so far it hasn’t seemed likely that he would.
The idea of McCain as The Penguin sparked from a campaign speech the presidential candidate gave last Friday in which he inadvertently channeled Burgess Meredith while congratulating his running mate, Sarah Palin, on her performance at the VP debate the night before. Since then, YouTubers galore have sampled the speech, whether using the audio to redub a scene from Batman Returns, as you can see in today’s Clip (and here), or intercutting the audio and video with footage from Meredith’s portrayal of The Penguin on the old Batman TV show, or simply drawing in the necessary accessories and props to make McCain look like Meredith’s Penguin.
The whole trend may have actually begun with a little joke on The Young Turks talk show. But how about it? Ehh? Throughout the Town Hall debate last night, while watching McCain waddle around that stage, I couldn’t get the Penguin thing out of my mind. He’s perfect for the part. Ehh? Body:
Well Matt, I actually usually find superheros to be pretty silly. So I don't get into the traditional ones very much. Especially the same ones over and over that everyone is obsessed over, which I think is pretty much the ones in the movies I had named. This Batman Begins movie was very dark, but I still find it pretty goofy. For instance, my all time favorite Batman is still Adam West because the show was basically doing a parody of the goofy but overly serious super hero premises. To me Hellboy brought out that kind of fun that the Adam West Batman did.
Rizzo...of course you like sillier stuff better. Of course. But I LOVE superheroes. LOVE 'EM. Like that show, Heroes....I eat that show up! Yeah it is overly dramatic..but...they are SAVING THE WORLD! Awesome. Now, I am going to admit something to you. Something kind of personal: I wish I could fly. Also, I wish I was highly trained in martial arts. And, I wish that if people were to shoot bullets at me, they would bounce off harmlessly. Finally, being able to breath under water would be sweet too.Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) these things are never going to be the case about me. So, I can watch the magic on the big screen. And I can play characters in games that live on and on and know how to use swords and stuff effectively. And I can dream about it. And that just may be where our tastes differ...which is fine.
Boy Matt, I'm going to have to inquire about this one [Bad Boys II]. I've never seen the original Badboys, but unfortunately for some horrible strange reasons I've actually seen Badboys II twice. I guess I can't just buy into the, lets blow up everything in sight for no reason idea. There was absolutely no regard for any kind of humanity in this movie. And did a movie like this really have to be 147 minutes long??Ok, let me know about that.
Now, Rizzo, about Bad Boys II. I have to say, I probably agree with you more than the things I wrote suggest. However, I don't think it is appropriate to denegrate a movie just because it doesn't live up to your hopes or expectations for it. The movie or movie making style just may not be for you. Also, I find a bit of comfort in the repetitious expolsions. It is reliable...you dont have to wonder if that car will eventually disolve into a rumbling ball of fire...you KNOW it will. Haha. And as far as humanity goes....I believe that the two bad boys themselves are narcotics cops. And drug dealers and pimps (other than Terrence Howard) are NOT humans...so killing them without abandon is NOT a problem. DING! Humanity back. Also, weren't they going to kill the bad guys to SAVE the sister of one of the bad boys and the girlfriend of another (all convieniently wrapped up in the same person on screen)?? That seems to show a bit of humanity and love. Now, I am writing this with a bit of a grin on my face because I know it doesn't really equate to good movie making...but still, I WAS surprised that I enjoyed them as much as I did. And I kinda like blow-em-up rock-em-sock-em movies. I think another example of this type of movie that is fun and funny is Rush Hour which Porcupine mentioned as well. In fact, a third example of a well made Hollywood action movie is the new movie of Miami Vice...that was a fun ride to be on as well. Lotsa splosions and fire. NICE.Finally, Iben...Waking Ned Divine is a great and quirky movie. Also I liked the "claw my eyes out line." You are funny!Mattypooooo
Body:
Seriously...Hellboy? Better than Batman?? You must be joking. Unfortunately, you are normally funny...so I cant say this was a very successful joke. Haha. Dude, Hellboy was ok...but if you are talking about comic book movies of "recent years" then you are reffering to Batman Begins which is a fantastic movie. And most certainly superior to Hellboy. Even if you are refering to the original Batman movie with Michael Keaton, I can't really believe that you think Hellboy is better.Sure sure...these are supposed to be movies that surprised you in a good way, so it is FINE that you have Hellboy on your list...but saying it is better than the most recent Batman movie is silly.
Well Matt, I actually usually find superheros to be pretty silly. These movies were well made Holywood comedy-action flicks. .
Boy Matt, I'm going to have to inquire about this one.
