Title: Double Dare
Year: 2005
Director: Amanda Micheli
Plot: Jeannie Epper and Zoe Bell are two women who get hurt for a living -- they're Hollywood stuntwomen, who take the falls and dodge the punches while taking the place of glamorous stars. Epper's big break came when she was hired to stand in for Lynda Carter on the Wonder Woman television series in the 1970s, while Bell made a name for herself doing Lucy Lawless' stunt work for Xena: Warrior Princess. Double Dare is a documentary which looks at the lives and careers of these two women, as well as their friendship. Epper, in her early sixties, finds herself dealing with ageism in the entertainment industry, just as she's dealt with sexism much of her life, as she struggles to stay in the game, while Bell learns from her older friend not only the nuts and bolts of stunt work but the trails Epper and her compatriots had to blaze to be respected in their profession. Double Dare also features appearances by Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: This is a brilliantly crafted documentary about the rise of one female stunt performer and the stunted career of another one who becomes her mentor. Oh there's lots of fun behind-the-movies stunt action, drunken parties and stunties gone wild to keep you entertained too. But what's most charming are moments like when Zoe Bell giggles when she's picked up in a limo from the airport and how excited she is to land a job. What's painful is the story of veteran stunt woman Jeannie Epper. She's still driving stunt cars instead of working as a stunt coordinator like most men her age who have as much experience (or probably less) and getting some other work, but she's also contemplating liposuction so that she can keep working. I shouldn't be surprised that female stunties have to have breast implants and other cosmetic surgeries, but it certainly is demoralizing in this day and age. So this movie is at once heartwarming and really depressing. Go Zoe Go! Maybe the new generation of female stunt performers will make a difference in the business.
Body: I absolutely loved Zoë Bell's performance in Death Proof, she is a fantastic (stunt) woman. Soon after I watched Grindhouse I looked up Zoe Bell on Wikipedia and found about Double Dare, a documentary about Zoë Bell and Jeannie Epper, the stunt woman for Wonder Woman in the (70's, 80's?).If you liked Death Proof's girl-power focus, check out Double Dare, it's a really great to see her rise from Zena's stunt double to Uma Thurman's in Kill Bill 1 and Kill Bill 2! Thankgiving and DON'T! were absolutely hilarious... they must have had so much fun making those two movies together.
Body: What could be better than Grindhouse this year? Seeing a documentary about the star of Deathproof is what could be better. This is a really incredible story. The documentary starts off as two stories. One about Jeannie Epper, the stunt double from Wonder Woman and member of a legendary family of stunt-people. The second is about Zoe Bell, the stunt woman who began her career as the double for Lucy Lawless on Xena.Their paths cross when Zoe is looking for work and Jeanie has her stay with her in California. The movie culminates in Zoe being discovered by a certain director and cast to double in a very popular 2-part epic. This movie is just so good. I hate to say heart warming, but it really is. To see an out of work young woman, and a 60 year old experienced stunt woman come together like this is just really amazing. You feel like you are there at the beginning of something really important. After it all I just want to meet Zoe Bell. I want to shake her hand, give her a hug, she is such a positive and impressive person.
