Title: The Muppet Christmas Carol
Year: 1992
Director: Brian Henson
Plot: Brian Henson, the son of Muppet founder Jim Henson, took over directing duties after the untimely death of his father for The Muppet Christmas Carol, a sluggish re-telling of the Charles Dickens tale. Michael Caine, surrounded by legions of fuzzy, felt puppets, plays it straight as the crotchety Ebenezer Scrooge, an old miser who could care less about Christmas and the joy the season brings. Working for the skinflint is his faithful employee Bob Cratchit (Kermit the Frog), who begs Scrooge for a day off for Christmas. Scrooge reluctantly agrees and goes home on Christmas Eve filled with bile at the holiday merrymakers. But then he is visited by the sprits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, and Scrooge, after revisiting his sorrowful past, hate-filled present, and doomed future, turns over a new leaf and becomes the most generous and celebratory person in town. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide
His transformation performance is the best, too, I think. The most naturally convincing. Not too sudden or over the top. It's a fine line--easy to get the timing and intensity wrong. Though a number of these Carol versions are good, I think my second favorite Scrooge is Mr. Magoo. :-) .
Body: There’s a new Muppet special premiering on NBC tonight called A Muppet Christmas: Letters to Santa. So, because I’m a Muppet-loving fool, I figured it appropriate to feature Jim Henson’s creations once again in the Clip of the Day. This isn’t some kind of marketing ploy, though, and anyway I couldn’t find any clips or ads specific to the new program. In order to make this post more film-related, I initially thought about sharing a scene, preferably a musical number, from The Muppet Christmas Carol, but I wrote enough about my love for that movie last year for another site.
So, I’ve used this as an opportunity to finally showcase a brilliantly edited music video for a song called “All Through the Night” by Brooklyn r&b group Escort (despite their retro disco sound, they’re a current band, interestingly featuring former members of the popular Boston ska band Skavoovie and the Epitones). It’s not a legitimate Henson production and it doesn’t have to do with the holidays — unless your holidays consist of making love to Muppets all through the night — but it’s one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on YouTube.
One of the things on my Christmas list this year, by the way, is to hear of a definite production start for Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller’s planned Muppet movie (and I’d also like Segel’s Muppets-related “Dracula’s Lament” song from Forgetting Sarah Marshall to receive an Oscar nomination). And if those guys can find a way to fit some Muppet disco into their film, I’ll be their biggest fan.
Check out the awesome music video after the jump.

Body: I won't waste my time recapping such a well-known story. Surely most everyone has seen at least one or two other versions of this Christmas classic, which range from the nearly unwatchable, to the cheesey to the near genius. I hadn't seen this version untilr recently, but upon watching it I will take the risk and say it falls into the latter of the three categories.
George C. Scott is brilliant as Scrooge, with an ominous and foreboding presence through out the movie that convinces the audience that this Scrooge will never see the err of his ways. Scott seems to hold onto his repugnant character a little longer and a little more tenaciously than the Scrooges in many other versions, making the transformation and redemption that much more surprising and heartwarming.
Perhaps the highlight of the film came from the three spirits that visited Scrooge through the night. Often they are shown as purely kind and compassionate beings, interested in gently showing Scrooge the error of his ways.
The spirits, under Clive Donner's direction play a much harsher and more malevolent role as they possess a more commanding presence, using their power and terror to get Scrooge to see his mistakes. The spirits often becoming angry with him and his refusal to change, and strike terror in Scrooge's hardened heart.
Donner's spirits seemed to better fit Dickens' original vision of the spirits in his classic tale, and transformed the film from the benign children's tale its become to a much more serious and more meaningful film.
As much as I love 1992's The Muppet Christmas Carol, Clive Donner created a version of A Christmas Carol that I'm sure Dickens would approve of. The dialogue is lifted nearly verbatim from the original story, and the character portrayals are outsanding and true to the feel of the original text.
For accuracy, and faithfulness to the message and feel of Dickens' masterpiece, this film gets an A+. The only (minor) detractors to the story being the at-times decidedly low-budget, low-tech special effects and somewhat theatrical over-dramatic acting at times. However, George C. Scott and crew carry the story so well and engross the audieence so thoroughly that most viewers will scarcely notice.
Body: At the risk of having too many discussion posts on this film's detail page from me, The Muppet Christmas Carol is my all time absolute favorite. I watch it several time each Christmas, and a few times through out the year for good measure. Yes, it might be unhealthy, but good movies do that to you. Love Actually is a fun network cast romantic comedy, I think Kristin Scott Thomas and Alan Rickman are my favorite couple in the movie, it's just interesting how things can go in a marriage. Plus the chick who is trying to seduce him is ridiculously scary. Home Alone 2: Lost in New Yorkis awesome mostly because it's in New York, which is beautiful and fun and Tim Curry is evil. Elf is slowly becoming my second favorite Christmas movie, it's extremely quotable and, well, I just don't get sick of it. "The best way to spread Christmas cheer, is to sing loud for all to hear." I actually said that in the middle of the office yesterday. I got hate looks.
Body:

I agree with almost all of the other selections, but one painfully absent thats always in my Christmas canon would have to be "A Muppet Christmas Carol". I still remember when it came out (I was in 6th grade). We were all a little too old to see it in the theatres then, but went anyways. I believe Jim Henson died shortly before the release, and I felt it my duty to see his last film, which did not disappoint in the slightest. To this day, I don't think there is a funnier family-friendly Christmas film with such a great cast and great music, a beautiful warmth to it.
We actually owned this one at my house too and saw it quite often. I think it's such a wonderful Christmas story (or any kind of story) that it's hard to screw it up. But somehow the muppets fit into the story especially well.
I own this one too! and I make people watch it year-round. I am a little insane when it comes to The Muppet Christmas Carol. And it warms my heart that Rizzo and I actually like the same movie. It must be the most wonderful time of year.
YAY!
