In 1986, the commune is down to two members -- Jack and Rose (Camilla Belle), his 16-year-old daughter from a marriage that ended with his wife's death. Educated by her father and isolated from "corrupting" outside influences, Rose is very close to her father, and keeps a close eye on his emotional needs as well as his health, which has been compromised by heart disease. Jack has an on-and-off relationship with Kathleen (Catherine Keener), a divorced mother of two teenage boys who lives on the mainland, and one day to Rose's great surprise, Jack announces that Kathleen and her boys will be moving in with them. Startled and betrayed by Kathleen's arrival, Rose is also disoriented by the sudden presence of outside influences and a sudden rush of adolescent lust. Rose first attempts to seduce sweet but stocky Rodney (Ryan McDonald), who opts instead to cut her long hair; she then takes up with moody Thaddius (Paul Dano), who takes her virginity. Before long, emotional war breaks out in the household with Rose battling Jack on all fronts; Jack, meanwhile, is taking a more direct tack on dealing with a developer (Beau Bridges) putting up buildings on nearby wetlands, attempting to chase him off with a shotgun. Body: If you were even slightly irritated by Ellen Page’s too-precocious performance in Juno, then you might want to avoid the trailer for Noam Murro’s Smart People. In the movie, which screened at Sundance last week, Page plays yet another teen who seems too smart for her own good. In fact, it is obvious that the trailer is trying to make this character appear similar to her Oscar-nominated role. Now, I’m not one of the many Juno haters, and I think Page has talent, but doesn’t it take away from her performance in Juno to show us that she’s doing the exact same thing in her follow-up? Never mind the fact that Smart People seems like The Squid and the Whale meets The Ballad of Jack and Rose — I’ve heard that it is pretty funny and smart despite its familiar territories — I’m more turned off by the fact that it’s like Juno II without our favorite Juno I actors (Cera, Bateman and Simmons, of course). Not that you can go wrong with Thomas Haden Church, with or without a catfish mustache (I just watched Spider-Man 3 for the first time, and he’s the only good thing about it). Here he plays the adopted brother of a pompous Carnegie Mellon professor played by Dennis Quaid. Page plays Quaid’s Young Republican daughter; Ashton Holmes (A History of Violence) plays his son; and Sarah Jessica Parker is his former student-turned-doctor who becomes his love interest. Apparently Church’s character is more free spirited than the rest, and he probably teaches them all to have more fun in life. This sounds pretty unoriginal, but from what I’ve read the film as a whole works as a satire of academia and specialized knowledge. Body: How about young female stars (under 21 yrs. old),that are not quite as famous (negative or positive publicity),at least tabloid wise,and yet a great talent in their own humble way;quality thespian without the fuss;In fact taking taking lesser known roles in variety or even riskier subject matter, which makes them a better thespian.the following are movies that i have seen ,i liked,and recommend(this actresses are under 21 when the movies were made and still under 21 today)*jena malone- stepmom,confessions of an american girl,dangerous lives of altar boys,saved*kristen stewart-speak,panic room*evan rachel wood-the upside of anger,pretty persuasion,thirteen,digging to china*camille belle-the ballad of jack and rose*valentina de angelis-off the mapoh yeah,our cute one,just barely a teen(13yrs. old)but i stiil thought i should mention her is(this one is a bit more famous,nothing negative though,at least that i have heard)*dakota fanning- taken (mini-series) ,trapped,man on fire,dreamer inspired by a true story,charlottes webnot all that are in the public eye ae hopeless,like britney, paris,etc..;there are great young ones;not to mention,i have not even started in thespians that are over 21 yrs. old now,or legal age and plays younger roles,or awesome young male actors
