Title: Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
Year: 2004
Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Plot: Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story revolves around amiable underachiever Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn), whose rundown gym, Average Joe's, is populated by a less-than-average clientele including a self-styled pirate, an ultra-obscure sports aficionado, and a pining high school nerd. It soon becomes apparent that Joe's is in financial trouble and will soon be foreclosed by attractive attorney Kate Veach (Christine Taylor) - unless Peter can cough up $50,000. Despite Average Joe's posing little threat to Globo Gym, a fitness Goliath across the street that is owned by egomaniacal White Goodman (Ben Stiller) - Goodman senses an easy acquisition and decides to take over the facility. Peter's ragtag group of regulars, however, are less than thrilled with the prospects, and mobilize a showdown, winner-takes-all Dodgeball tournament against Globo Gym. The film also features Missi Pyle, Rip Torn, Stephen Root, and Alan Tudyk. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide
Body: The new movies I mention are coming out on Thanksgiving, which is Thursday the 26th. Getting Bigger All the Time: The Vince Vaughn Chronicles Let's trace his growth in reverse order. 5. Four Christmases (NEW) -- Vaughn is now over 12 feet tall. Needless to say, Vince was filmed separately, in front of a green screen. He only held a real prop once: Inside the box is a 52" flatscreen TV. 4. Wedding Crashers (2005) -- Watch the trailer. Vince is nearly 9 feet tall. To make him appear only slightly larger than Owen Wilson, Director Peter Jackson is hired to pull out all the perspective tricks he used with the Hobbits in LOTR. 3. Dodgeball (2004) -- Watch the trailer. Vince is seven and a half feet tall. It becomes clear that Vince can't throw a dodgeball without giving his target a concussion. Their solution: preceding all action scenes, the studio weakens him by shooting him with a moose tranquilizer. 2. Made (2001) -- Watch the trailer. My favorite Vince Vaughn movie! Vince and actor/director Jon Favreau (of Iron Man) are entry-level mobsters trying not to blow their new career in crime. Peter Falk is great as the mob boss. With Vince measuring 6'11", it's clear why Falk would want him as a thug. 1. Swingers (1996) -- Would anyone who used Vince's catchphrase, "That's money!", in 1996 please confess in this discussion? I was too young to see this movie when it came out, and when I finally saw it about two years ago, I couldn't get why it became a craze. Can someone please help me understand? Swingers is the last time Vince was nearly normal-sized, at 6'5". New Movies That Sound Like Musicals When You Add An Exclamation Point 1. Australia! -- Watch the trailer. Starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, set in Pre-WWII Australia. The director Baz Luhrmann has made films like Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet, so I think this will be good. 2. Milk! -- Watch the trailer. Based on the true story of gay activist Harvey Milk. With Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, James Franco, Emile Hirsch. When Jason Statham is More Badass Than Usual 1. Transporter 3 (NEW) -- Watch the trailer. The trailer's exciting. I didn't see the first two movies because I heard they weren't very good. Are there any fans of them out there? 2. Crank (2006) -- Watch the trailer. Statham wakes up to find that his arch-enemy has poisoned him. He only has about an hour to find an antidote and/or avenge his murder. It's filmed in real time, and it makes Run, Lola Run feel like a walk in the park. Orthodox Jewish Film: I Don't Have a Clever Title for This List 1. The Secrets (NEW) -- Drama about students in an all-female seminary in Safed, Israel. 2. Ushpizin (2005) -- Watch the trailer. This was really fantastic. Moshe and Mali are delighted to let Moshe's old friends stay with them for a time, but their stay turns sour when the friends' presence seems to awaken some old bad habits in Moshe, like binge drinking and barroom brawling. A gorgeous film about patience, change, and hope. New to DVD Highlights 1. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (11/18) -- Watch the trailer. I haven't seen this one yet, but I'd like to. Did you like it more than the first one? 2. Tropic Thunder (11/18) -- Watch the trailer. Good but not great (in my opinion). Ben Stiller was my favorite character. 3. Hancock (11/25) -- Watch the trailer. Seeing it once was too much. 4. Mamma Mia! (11/25) -- Watch the trailer. That musical with Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth. 5. X-Files: I want to Believe (11/25) -- Watch the trailer. I want to believe this is good, but I can't. Does anyone remember that old episode where the guy elongates his body and slithers through heating ducts? He uses his power to enter peoples' homes and eat their livers? Remember? 6. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (11/18) -- Watch the trailer. I'm not sure, but I think this movie is about Johnny Appleseed's groupies. They followed him on foot all over America, even in winter! That showed a lot of determination, especially considering that they were so poor, they only had one pair of pants to share among them. In this second installment, several of the girls get frostbite, all of them get snakebites, and one of them bites a woodchuck and gets rabies.
Body:
Can i be so bold as to add the theme's title "This Sporting Life (1963)" with a young hulking Richard Harris virtually playing himself,as a Rugby League player, who aims "above himself" as it were, in a "class war" drama of the sixties from Lindsay Anderson. Because i'm a motor racing fan,and i went to see them when they came out,i should add Grand Prix andLe-Mans with steve McQueen A couple of additions "Rollerball" with the mighty James Caan.(it's gonna happen!) and "Dodgeball" , a sporting classic... Body:
As a high-school runner, I have to lay down "Chariots of Fire" as a sports movie although not so classically sporty as the usual team over coming insurmountable odds within and without that Disney periodically cranks out with a 'Based on a True Story' tagline...
I watched Chariots of Fire again and I think it is one of the few Olympic movies that stand up to repeated viewings. (Unlike Cool Runnings.) In terms of sports comedies I have to go with Dodgeball and A Day at the Races. Both are hilarious for different reasons. If you can't watch either without laughing your ass off, you need to see a mental health specialist. For baseball, I'd have to go with John Singleton's Eight Men Out and The Pride of the Yankees as a double header since they show the game at it's worst and best. For hockey, I'd pick Mystery, Alaska. As for boxing, it's got to be the original Rocky, hands down. And Sly comes right back for the best movie portrayal of professional arm wrestling with Over The Top.
Body: This is a really, really stupid movie. But it is a really, really funny stupid movie. This was one of those rare comedies where the entire audience is laughing out loud for large portions of the film. I don't usually like to see comedies in the theater, but this one was worthwhile. The humor is often juvenile, but so what. It is very, very funny.
Body: By Tricia Olszewski Even if you spent your high-school years as a 90-pound weakling, the type to get picked last in gym and take showers in your underwear, with a little distance you should be able to recognize a universal truth: Watching someone get repeatedly whapped in the head with a ball is pretty frickin’ hilarious. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is about as sophisticated as the game it celebrates, but still “the sport of violence, exclusion, and degradation” is comic gold. Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, creator of Reebok’s Office Linebacker commercial, Dodgeball shifts the cool-kids-vs.-geeks dynamic to the business world. Ben Stiller, with highlights and handlebar mustache, is White Goodman, overcompensating owner of Globo Gym (ad pitch: “Tired of being overweight and underattractive? It’s your fault if you don’t hate yourself enough to do something about it!”). Vince Vaughn is White’s less-than-competitor Peter La Fleur, the good-guy proprietor of Average Joe’s, which is less a gym than a haven for broke misfits. When the bank is about to foreclose on Peter, he and his freak customers decide to compete in the Las Vegas International Dodgeball Open to win the $50,000 Peter needs to keep White from taking over his place. Stiller’s manic-dumb-guy overacting is nicely balanced by Vaughn’s deadpan—a blank stare that, actually, has been mastered by all the actors who make up Peter’s team, including Stephen Root (Office Space’s Milton), Christine Taylor, and Justin Long, the abuse of whom is a continual highlight. The humor doesn’t get much more intelligent than “Cram it up your cramhole, La Fleur!” but c’mon, we’re talking about a game whose whole point is...well, you know. Some bad memories may resurface whenever the more nerdly players get pummeled—not to mention at taunts such as “You’re adopted. Your parents don’t even love you!”—but Dodgeball knows that laughter is the first step to healing.
Body: I loved this one. This was an extremely funny movie with really good characters. White Goodman was pretty similar to Tony Perkis. I thought White Goodman was probably one the funniest antagonists to date. This is definitely worth seeing if you want a laugh. Awesome Comedy
