Title: Alien vs. Predator
Year: 2004
Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Plot: Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, Alien vs. Predator follows billionaire Charles Bishop Weyland (Lance Henriksen) and his team of drillers, scientists, and archaeologists, to an obscure pyramid site in Antarctica. Among the icy ruins, allegedly, lies the proof of an empire predating humankind. Once there, however, the group finds more than ancient sarcophaguses and hieroglyphics; rather, their discovery consists of dismembered human skeletons and fossilized remains of the alien creatures that appear to have violently burst out of their chests. Even more horrifying is the evidence suggesting that the aliens may still exist. Indeed, there are aliens below the pyramids, but an equal threat looms above: three Predators, all on the verge of manhood, are engaged in a gruesome rite of passage -- every hundred years, young Predators must travel to Earth and take on a hunting ritual in order to complete the transition to adulthood or die in the process. Before long, the humans find themselves battling for their own lives as the Predators and aliens continue their fight for superiority. The film also features Sanaa Lathan, Raoul Bova, Ewen Bremmer, Colin Salmon, and Agathe de la Boulaye. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide
Body: Please reference this thread for the rules of this group. Again it's kind of an arbitrary comparison I know, but I still thought it was interesting how many Andersons there were as famous directors. I know Roy Andersson has an extra "s" in it, but as far as I know it's pronounced the same. Please vote only once in each poll. Some of the movies from these directors: Lindsay Anderson - This Sporting Life, If...., O Lucky Man! Paul Thomas Anderson - Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood Paul W.S. Anderson - Event Horizon, Resident Evil, AVP: Alien vs. Predator Wes Anderson - Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Roy Andersson - A Swedish Love Story, Songs from the Second Floor, You, the Living
Body: Two of the most popular modern-day movie monsters square off in this highly anticipated, though somewhat weak, motion picture. A millionaire (Lance Henriksen) hires a group of archaeologists and other experts to investigate a pyramid which lays 2,000 feet below the surface of Antarctica. What they find are two alien species -- one a hunter, the other its prey. They also discover that the pyramid has moving walls and chambers which cut them off from one another. They then discover, after many have died from being killed by mainly the ones we know as the Alien, that the Predators have kept an Alien Queen so it could produce offspring for the Predators to hunt for practice. The movie is very slow moving, and does not have much of a good build to the first appearance by the extraterrestrials. It does. however, have great fight scenes between the Predators and Aliens. One problem with this movie is the character development of the human cast. There are many characters who are just there to be killed by a Predator or an Alien -- and none of those are developed well enough for you to really care when they are killed. Another problem with the movie is that there are too few real suspenseful moments after the Alien and Predator come on-screen. The movie moves way too quickly from one attack scene to the other for the audience's psyche to play with their fears for a good scare. The acting is a lot better than the movie itself. However, the characters are not expanded upon very well except for the lead actress (Sanaa Lathan). In fact, with exception of the Aliens and Predators, Lathan carries the movie and the rest of the cast. In my opinion, this movie would be good enough for a Saturday movie night at home with help from your local Blockbuster -- if you can look past the flaws.
Body: Cool concept - flawed execution. Sure, the thing is shot wonderfully, and the effects are top notch, so if that's what you're looking for, you'll be properly satisfied. The story, though, is deeply flawed in keeping with both the Alien and Predator story "facts". For instance, Alien blood is, by now, well known to be highly acidic, and this is shown when one of the Predators uses his wristblades to cut the Alien, and his wristblades melt. Not more than a few minutes later, the same Predator chops the head off of another Alien, and absolutely NOTHING happens to the blade, let alone the fact that not a DROP of acid comes out of the Alien. And that's just ONE example, and believe me, there are tons of inconsistancies in logic, story arc, and "lore" - too many to get into here and now. Sorry, fanboys...I think they could have done better. Fun, but not enough.
Body: You have to admit - The Predator and The Alien are two very intimidating creatures. And this film does an outstanding job of showing you how incredibly lethal they are. The fight scenes are well choreographed and sufficiently brutal. In fact - they kick some serious butt. While the creatures are the main attraction, Sanaa Lathan is awesome. Not the kind of movie I expected to see her in, but she can hold her own. This one is one thrilling sequence after another - well worth the price of admission
Body: I can only imagine what compromising pictures there must be floating out there of Joan Allen to get her to agree to a role in director Paul W.S. Anderson's car porn flick, “Death Race.” Granted, her role in the “Bourne” films was a supporting one, but this woman was thrice nominated for an Oscar. I mean, she's got to be more proud of starring in Saturday Night Live's “The Best of Chris (Mr. Peepers) Kattan” video than this. I know the argument: “It's just pure fun, it's a Roger Corman film, for crying out loud. Loosen up, Mr. Stuffy Movie Critic Guy!” And while I will admit to a few inventive scenes (the one prisoner's head that seemingly explodes when he gets plowed into was a nifty little effect. But the director must have thought so too, and decided to show it on three separate occasions), the overall effect is nothing that watching a 90-minute string of Mountain Dew (or whatever your “Extreme” beverage of choice) commercials on a loop. Sure, of Corman's 300-plus film credits, he's produced such titles as “Attack of the Giant Leeches,” “Eat My Dust,” “Bloodfist” and “Chopping Mall.” But in the original film, he was working with witty, subversive director Paul Bartel, who went on to direct the camp classics “Eating Raoul” and “Lust in the Dust.” “The 1975 original stung with social commentary, from the rising tide of violence in professional sports to the Orwellian machinations of Big Brother inherent in the United States. As over-the-top as it was, “Death Race 2000” was at least about something. I suppose the new incarnation is as well. It's about 90 minutes. Other than that, there is little to recommend for anyone other than the most adamant auto enthusiast who reads “Car & Driver” as if it were a “Penthouse Forum”: “She had a dual-door, quad-wheel, semi-hemi-V8, stacked with a 440 Mopar and a body for gear-grinding glory! Yeah, baby! Say it slower!” Jason Statham, who is contractually obligated to release his films in cinematic dust bowl known as late August, stars as Jensen Ames, a laid-off steelworker and devoted family man who coincidentally happens to be a one-time racing champ. I say “coincidentally” because it is only after Jensen is framed for the murder of his wife and imprisoned that we find out this little piece of exposition. Allen plays the icy warden of this futuristic prison, who is in dire need of a new driver for her popular “Death Race” television show that pits prisoners against one another buzzing around the facilities in “Mad Max” - like vehicles. One by one, prisoners meet their demise as Jensen, fueled by the rage of his predicament and the promise of release if he wins, eliminates the competition. This is the point in the review where I would list some of the supporting actors and the characters they portrayed, but, really, what's the point? Director Paul W.S. Anderson (who apparently added the initials so we would not confuse his oeuvre -- “Alien vs. Predator,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Soldier” -- with that of Paul Anderson, director of award-winning films such as “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia” and “There Will Be Blood”) is solely invested on playing to the ADHD crowd. There is not a camera held steady for more than 20 seconds and both the race and fight scenes are seemingly filmed by hiccup-plagued cameramen. To compensate, he fills the speakers with death-metal dirges designed solely to increase adrenaline or elicit spontaneous ear-bleeding. And atop this wreckage of twisted metal Allen is perched, barking out lines as though she was attempting to hold back the bile induced by even having her name affixed to it. Forget menacing, it would be a stretch if she even appeared interested during her minutes on screen. One can only hope that after the sobbing concludes, she can dust herself off and head back into roles the captivating actress so richly deserves.
Body: A perfect franchise match-up, as the ultimate "sport-hunter" takes aim at the the ultimate natural predator. The film does an excellent job of merging the two legendary franchises, and even though it takes place in the present (long before any of the Alien movies), they do a great job of tieing it in to the series' continuity by having the main characters funded by Mr. Weyland, founder of Wayland Industries, better known as "The Company", the sinister organization that sent the Nostromo to capture the original Alien. This at last answers the question of how the company first found out about the killing machines. If you are a fan of either series, I can't recommend this movie highly enough, and consider it the best of either franchise (though I have not yet seen AVP 2).</spout:body>

Body: Alien Vs Predator is based on two of the most popular sci-fi/horror franchases in the history of film. Fans of both series, in both film, book and comic book culture, were very much looking forward to a film being made involving these legendary characters. Finally Paul W. S. Anderson made such one. And it sucked. Background on the film: The movie takes place in Antartica in the present day. A heat source has been discovered by Weyland Industries (which is commonly referred to as 'The Company' in the Alien films) which ends up being an ancient. In a race against other companies looking to discover what this is, Bishop Weyland compiles a team of explorers, researchers and cave divers. When they begin exploring the pyramid they discovered several cultures developed it (Egyptian, Incan, etc). Suddenlly one of the team members inadvertanly sets off the pyramid to begin the process that has been done every few hundred years: the breeding of Aliens so the Predators can fight them and therefore, prove themselves to be true warriors. From there it all goes downhill. It wasn't so much so that script or story sucked. It was the fact that this movie was degraded down to a PG-13 rating. When both franchises have always been rated R. Because of this degrading it has affected the plot and much of the action sequences of the film in order to advertise it to younger audiences. What also affected this film is that Anderson even went out of his way to mess with the design of the reputed adversaries themselves. The Predators looked like oversized, steroid-laced things. Which in watching the film, you can obviously tell that the actors that wore these costumes had a hard time walking, much less running and fighting. The Aliens, which were based on the artwork of H. R. Giger, were made too bulky. They were supposed to be fluid in their movement as they have in previous films. But like their Predator counterparts, they can hardly move. The ending is an obvious hint that a sequel will be made - and was - and thankfully was done in a much better fashion than what Anderson did.
Body: 1. Transformers !!! The trailer looked awesome, like there was gonna be a sort of a good story and less cheesy acting and plot. I remember watching the trailer i went like I HAVE to see this movie.2. The Village, this looked like a monster thriller movie that was gonnna be full of sick scenes like sixth sense and the 10 minute happy dancing sequence really made me think: They cheated me !3. Ocean's Twelve Well the traielr was just Colors, Text and good music. It just had a feeling that it was gonna be a great film, and the trailer itself was so good, like: Hey i am not showing any scene you have to wait and see. And well, I wait and see and ... .. What can you do4. Alien Vs Predator5. Dreamcatcher looked like it was a really good horror-thriller, and ...
