Title: Bad Taste
Year: 1987
Director: Peter Jackson
Plot: Extraterrestrial fast-food franchisers come to earth to pick up food supplies-in this case, human flesh. After wiping out a few small towns, the aliens must contend with a team of government assassins, headed by Pete O'Herne. As the plot rolls on, O'Herne's crew is decimated in as gory a manner as possible, and innocent bystander Craig Smith ends up being marinated (and a darned good job it is). Turns out that the space folks are running on a timetable; they've got to return to their home planet with their human-hash cargo before a rival franchise puts them out of business. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Just crazy. Bad Taste is fantastic. Especially when you watch the extra feature documentary how they made it with basically no money.
Body:
Nice choices... I sometimes forget that 'weird' was invented before 1995!
The two Jodorowsky films which I have seen, El Topo and Holy Mountain, make David Lynch-type weirdness seem tame. I would include those two and Eraserhead as the three which leap to mind as incomprehensible (to me anyway). Without giving it much more thought, and probably just because Cronenberg deserves a mention in any category of wierdness, I'll round out the five with The Brood and his adaptation of Naked Lunch

As a guy who specializes in collecting the odd and unusual and WEIRD in the film world, I felt I must comment here. I have seen most of the movies mentioned above and I have Jodorowski's El Topo and The Holy Mountain as well as EVERYTHING by Lynch and Cronenberg and beyond in my collection. Some movies are SO weird (The Holy Mountain) that they just make NO sense at all and therefore have lttle or no entertainment value. However, some films can be completely weird AND highly entertaining as well! 2001 and Fantasia are excellent examples of this. I can't believe no one has mentioned the films of Ken Russel yet including Tommy , Altered States , The Lair of the White Worm and The Devils . Honorable mention should be given to John Waters with films such as Multiple Maniacs and Pink Flamingos . Peter Jackson gets a nod for some of his early work like Bad Taste and Meet The Feebles . Pink Floyd: The Wall and Flavia The Heretic get honorable mentions as well... I know that is more than 5 but I was taking it easy on you guys... I could go on and on on this subject... < GOR >
I think you are mostly right, Rizzo, but I think The Great Escape had a couple of women in it. Not in major roles but in the scenes after the escape and trhe prisoners are fleeing about the countryside and through the towns. I will have to see it again to be sure. The original version of The Thing From Another World features a woman in a predominate role but I believe you are correct in that the remake has none. I think you are correct about the other movies you mentioned. I guess there are a few of them. Interesting... < GOR >
Body: Yes, boys and ghouls, it's that magical time of the year again, when ghosts and goblins and monsters and madmen roam the earth in search of 'sweets'! That's right! It's Thanksgiving! ... Oops! My bad! I had my calender on the wrong page! To make a long story short, I just purchased a 'restored/remastered' DVD of Halloween and I watched this movie again for about the 30th time and IT JUST DOESN'T GET OLD! There is a story behind this one, but basically, there are actually some movies that I don't mind seeing over and over again! What a phenomena ! Anyhow, AOL has compiled (yet another) list of the all time best Horror Movies! You can check it out here... Best Horror Movies of All Time: 31 Days of Horror - Moviefone. If I were to have to pick my Top Ten all-time favorite Horror Movies, I think that list would change... day to day... depending a lot upon my mood... At THIS moment in my life, my top-ten list would look something like this... 1. The Exorcist ; STILL THE SCARIEST MOVIE EVER MADE!!! 2. Night Of The Living Dead ; A masterpiece! Who could NOT resist the charms of THIS classic! 3. Dawn Of The Dead 4. Zombie 5. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 6. Psycho 7. Day Of The Dead 8. Return Of The Living Dead 9. Friday The 13th: part II 10. A Nightmare On Elm Street ... ... Freddy fucking rules! Anyhow, those are my thoughts. What are yours?
Body: Yeah the rules of Dogme 95 essentially eliminate most of the categories you would normally spend budget on like props, costumes, locations, special effects...And Bad Taste took four years to shoot! You think if they had the money to spend they would have probably found a way to get it done sooner than that!
Body: I'm not sure I like the idea of listing below $10, because it seems like a random number. I'll just list some really low budget films that are some of my favorites. Like Rizzo said, probalby 90% of my favorite films fit this category. But here are some that are blatantly low budget 1. Once - I just saw this film, and I am so blown away. 2. The Celebration - Best of Dogme 95, highly recommended.3. Bad Taste - not my favorite low budget, but must be commended for being made on a budget of about $200. 4. Night of the Living Dead - one of the best low budget films ever.5. Gerry - I'm pretty sure this was low budget. I really have no idea. But it must be. It's great though
Body: I think one of the funniest zombie movies I have seen was Bad Taste. The humans are kind of like zombies in that they shamble around and move slowly. They aren't rotting and such, but are mindless, just like the undead zombies in most films. I haven't seen it in a while, but I need to watch it again. There are some pretty funny damn scenes in it. "My name is Derek and Dereks don't run!"
Body:
But I don't think Froggy is into the major gore fests, are you Froggy?
Oh you have no idea, Ms. June. I used to be quite a hound, actually. I went on Amazon at one point and just put in "gore" for a search. You would not BELIEVE some of the crap that came up. That was how I found out about most of the "Italian Horror" like Zombie and The Beyond and City of the Living Dead and so on and so forth. Oh yeah! Bad Taste and Dead Alive and even Meet the Feebles! That one will make you queasy, let me tell you, even though it isn't really a horror movie. I have toned down quite a bit since then, but every once in a while I can for for a good head-choppin', bowl-spillin', blood-squirtin' gory good time. By the way, the fellows are right about the Guinea Pig movies, mostly. If you watch the double feature I mentioned, Mermaid in a Manhole / He Never Dies, these two stories are very much not borderline snuff films. They're just weird and unsettling / funny as hell, respectively. HOWEVER, Flowers of Flesh and Blood basically IS a snuff film, just with plastic. In the beginning of the film, there's actually a little blurb about how the film is based on some stills a guy sent in to an artist. If that's not the most f**ked up thing ever, I don't know what is. DON'T WATCH THIS ONE IF YOU VALUE HUMAN LIVES! But if you're very very very very very very very curious, like I was, watch the previews for it on YouTube before you go renting it. In fact, if you're ubercurious and just NEED to watch it, watch it on YouTube. It's free. But yeah, definitely watch Mermaid in a Manhole / He Never Dies. It's a good one.
