Title: Cowboy Bebop [Anime Series]
Director: Shinichiro Watanabe
Plot: Originally broadcast in 1998 with 12 episodes on TV Tokyo, Cowboy Bebop also aired in 2001 as part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming with an excellent English-dubbed soundtrack and all 26 episodes. The action-packed and hyper-styled animé is a very human drama in a futuristic setting about crime-fighting adventurers. Set in the 21st century, the Earth is a wasteland and the solar system has been fitted with hyperspace gates -- sort of an expressway for spaceships -- where criminals and gangsters continue to proliferate. Enter the misfit bounty hunters of the rickety ship called Bebop. Spike Siegel is the ultra-cool Bruce Lee-style fighter, who harbors painful memories that he covers up with a cynical wit. Jet Black is a former cop and a decent mechanic, who carries around memories of his own troubled past along with his mechanical arm. Faye Valentine is a femme fatale and compulsive gambler with a massive debt, who yearns to discover her identity prior to her cryogenic freezing. Along with the self-styled computer hacker girl called Ed and the data dog, Ein, the bounty hunters try to earn their keep and get through the day. The visual style is unique in the animé genre, using inspiration from old pulp adventure stories, film noir, and Westerns. Along with the original jazz compositions from The Seatbelts, the soundtrack incorporates rock & roll and blues references. Style reigns in the world of these futuristic outlaws, but not at the sake of substance. The tragi-comic family of the Bebop crew deals with the realities of loneliness and isolation, as well as shoot-em-up action and bittersweet romance. Alternately poignant, destructive, and hilarious, Cowboy Bebop has become an exceptional science fiction series. The series would be followed by a feature-length adventure, Cowboy Bebop: The Movie in 2002. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide
Body: Merc took all of my ideas! (At least that's my story) I honestly am having trouble with this one. Maybe I just don't know what a traditional hero is. I kind of see all heros as being fucked up in one way or another. Perhaps the whole greek tragedy with their flawed hero characters has stuck with me since high school. I'll go with some anime for now - Gutz - from Berserk Van - from Gun X Sword Dracula - from Hellsing Himura Kenshin - from Rurouni Kenshin Rock - from Black Lagoon Lelouche - from Code Geass Spike - from Cowboy Bebop
Body:

Waterworld Risselada? Really? Not to knock your taste. Just really suprised at the choice! Really?!
I was probably in my mid-teens when I saw this. It's probably been ten years since, and I haven't seen it again. But I do remember thinking it was really great when I saw it, and not being aware of it's reputation and being labled "Fishtar" and all that until many years later. I remember being surprised that people thought it was so awful.
I demand you use this terrible film as material for Natsukashi. Not really. It's probably a bit too mainstream, but you could run it by rrector if you want. Still I'd like to hear some rizzo improving some natsukashi. :) Okay Top 5 Postapocalyptic Films: Cowboy Bebop / Cowboy Bebop:Knockin' on Heaven's Door Scryed (I'll add this to our database soon) Ergo Proxy Now and Then, Here and There RahXephon These are actually all anime series. I guess the Japanese are pretty fanatical about postapocalyptic settings. :)
Body: Are You Serious What gave you the impression that this was the "Citizen Kane" of anime? I would have thought a better candidate would be something like Akira or Ghost in the Shell. Or maybe Grave of the Fireflies. Or anything by Miyazaki. As far as anime series go though, I think Cowboy Bebop might be assigned that title. This has to be one of the best anime no movies ever made how could you not feel for this movie. From the first scene you know what happens to them and over the course of the movie you're routing for them and at the end you are slackjawed and shocked at what you have seen i mean any disney movies have that kind of emotion any that can come even close YEAH RIGHT!!!
Body: So, what are some of the saddest anime you've seen? I think Grave of the Fireflies is going to be a given here, but what other anime makes you sad? Some of the sadder ones I've seen are Fullmetal Alchemist and Wolf's Rain. Cowboy BeBop gets pretty depressing towards the end, and Paradise Kiss has a really sad ending too. Personally, I like watching sad anime better than comedies (even though the comedies are still very good and entertaining), just because their plots always seem a lot deeper, and it's easier to get caught up in them and relate to their emotions. So, what do you guys think?
Body:
It seems like you've seen most of the biggest name stuff as far as movies go. I know of some more that you haven't, but I haven't seen them either, so I can't really recommend them. Except for the Cowboy Bebop movie, but I'd recommend watching the whole series before the movie. I think that series is probably the one that has brought the most people into becomming anime fans. I think it was made by some of the same people as Wolf's Rain as well. But if you watch a few episodes of Cowboy Bebop, I'd be surprised if you don't get hooked.
I actually saw the Cowboy Bebop movie a while ago when I was in the Calvin College Anime Club. I thought it was ok, but I didn't love it which is why it wasn't on my list. I did like the character of Eddy...or whatever that tech savvy little girl was named. She was funny and I liked her costumes. Perhaps I should have started with the series. Where do you get your episodes from? Are they available at stores like Blockbuster? I used to have Blockbuster Online...but I just wasn't watching as many movies as I wanted to while paying the 17 bucks a month...maybe I should give it another shot! Hah, perhaps that would curb my WoW enthusiasm a bit. Thanks for the suggestions DJS. I will check into Wolf's Rain as well.Matt
Body:
Second: Rizzo, I had no clue you liked anime. We should watch some together.
I'm down!
Anyway, here is my question: If I like the above stuff....what other movies should I check into. I mean, I obviously love Hayao Miyazaki but other than that, I am really unsure about what to look into. The voice talent and other celebs he pulls in are awesome. Neal Gaiman and Billy Bob Thorton and Christian Bale...wow. Good stuff. I think I will look into Wolf Rain and I was kinda a fan of the Gundam Wing stuff I saw on Cartoon Network....but I feel like there are always spin off series and I am afraid of getting lost in a crappy side show. Also, it sorta bums me out when a show gets mired in drawn out battles that shouldn't last NEARLY as long as they do (See Dragon Ball Z...bleh). HELP!
