Title: Logan's Run
Year: 1976
Director: Michael Anderson
Plot: In a hermetically sealed, post-apocalyptic urban environment several centuries hence, Logan 5 (Michael York) and his friend Francis 7 (Richard Jordan) lead unquestioning lives of hedonism. Entertainment comes in the form of casual sexual liaisons and gladiatorial games in which those who do not wish to undergo euthanasia at the age of 30 vie for the illusory chance of continued life. As "sandmen," Logan and Francis are charged with tracking down and killing "runners" -- those citizens who will submit to neither "renewal" (a peaceful death) nor "carousel" (a gladiatorial battle) when their time comes. When Logan grows intrigued by a beautiful young woman, Jessica 6 (Jenny Agutter), who plans to become a runner, he is forced to question the fundamental principles of his society. And when his superiors force him to pose as a runner himself to weed out Jessica's guerilla underground, Logan finds himself fleeing the city in search of a mythical place called Sanctuary where people are allowed to live out their natural spans. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide
Body:

Ooooh Jenny Agutter. She's hot in Logan's Run. I'll have to see that. I wonder how the wolf transformation will be in the new Wolfman movie. I heard they were gonna do it all with make up but then gave in and used CG.
If you would like to see a young Jenny Agutter nude and you are into Italian westerns (which I know you are), then you must check out Amore, piombo e furore (1978) . (aka "China 9, Liberty 37" ... this enigmatic title is taken from a signpost at the beginning of the movie) . This Italian/Spanish production is about a love triangle in the old west involving Agutter, Warren Oates and the aptly named Fabio Testi... And with a brief appearance by none other than Sam Peckinpah as a "dime-novelist"! < GOR >
And it's directed by Monte Hellman I see. I was surprised when I looked her up and realized she was the same girl from Walkabout. I guess there has been a new adaptation of Logan's Run in the works for a while now, but I'm not sure if it's going anywhere. Anyone see the TV series or read the original book? I'm curious.
Body: Winner: jdamer83's picks knocked me out. Neo is essentially a kung-fu Dirty Harry, so who better than Clint Eastwood? As Dr. Strangelove shows, George C. Scott is a hypnotic scenery-chewer and perfect for Agent Smith. And Ernest Borgnine as Tank! I'm glad we don't see him die on-screen (I don't think I could handle losing Marty). Every choice is inspired: John Cazale as Apoc, Dennis Hopper and Dean Stockwell as the agents, Telly Savalas as the villainous Cypher. Check out page 2 of this discussion for jdamer83's story surrounding the Robert Evans-produced, Coppola-directed Enter the Matrix. Enter the Matrix- a late 60s/early 70s extravaganza Clint Eastwood as Neo. A no-brainer. Eastwood is one of the biggest stars in the world, and his stoic, other-worldly nature perfectly suits the character. Because of a fear that he will look ridiculous doing kung-fu, Eastwood is initially reluctant to take the role, but he accepts after Evans personally offers to buy a house for him. James Earl Jones as Morpheus An iffy choice for Evans, who initially wanted the more well-known Sidney Poiter. Yet, Coppola fought for Jones in the role, and after seeing him say the alphabet on Sesame Street (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxwrVw6Vsjw), Evans admits that Jones is perfect for the role. Julie Christie as Trinity Cool, beautiful and ethereal, Christie fits the role of Trinity like a glove. George C. Scott as Agent Smith Because the man can play villains so well and he looks like the possible devil incarnate, Scott is offered the role. He accepts, but doesn't want his name in the credits. And the rest of the cast: Ruby Dee as The Oracle Telly Savalas as Cypher Ernest Borgnine as Tank John Cazale as Apoc Tom Courtenay as Mouse Sandy Dennis as Switch Jim Brown as Dozer Dennis Hopper (pre-EASY RIDER) as Agent Brown Dean Stockwell as Agent Jones Second place: wadetown for his BBC production. My favorite part is Alan Rickman as Agent Smith--that guy always brings a campy danger to his villainous roles. And I'd love to see Paddy Considine (one of the two Andy's in Hot Fuzz) play Cypher. Considine has an uncouth charm, always greasy-looking and sporting bad facial hair. The BBC presents The Matrix Clive Owen ... Neo When you think about it, this would be a lot like his role in Children of Men. A disillusioned character frustrated with his reality, except with a lot less baby-protecting and a lot more kung fu. Sir Ben Kingsley ... Morpheus Morpheus has to be bald. Cate Blanchett ... Trinity She can wear her wig from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Alan Rickman ... Agent Smith This pick hinges on the availability of using a time machine to go back and get the Hans Gruber Alan Rickman from Die Hard. Dame Judi Dench ... Oracle A small role for her, but since its Judi Dench she'd probably get nominated for an Oscar. Paddy Considine ... Cypher Something about Paddy Considine screams for a role as a double-crossing weasel. Chiwetel Ejiofor ... Tank Not much reasoning behind this pick other than the Zion-born humans should be healthy and attractive. Steve Coogan ... Apoc Bringing much needed comic relief to this movie. Freddie Highmore ... Mouse His first adult role. And I really want to see him whip out two huge machine guns right before his character gets killed. Thandie Newton ... Switch Colin Salmon ... Dozer My only obscure selection. He was in a couple of the Pierce Brosnan Bond films I believe. Plus he kind of looks like Chiwetel Ejiofor's brother. Jeremy Irons ... Agent Brown Another Die Hard villiain as an agent. Hugh Laurie ... Agent Jones For some reason, all my agents ended up being the snide, sarcastic Brits. A lot of the contemporary recasts featured Christian Bale, Clive Owen, or James McAvoy as Neo. I think they'd all be good (have you seen McAvoy in Wanted? it's pretty much Fight Club meets The Matrix) but I don't think it's a coincidence that a lot of people reset The Matrix in the 1970s. A sci-fi/kung-fu hybrid, the movie sounds like the quintessent 70s blockbuster/cult hit. Check out this post Paul wrote a while ago in PulpFiction1975: THE DOT-MATRIX (1970)During the week, young Tom Anderson (Robert Redford) is a Mathematicion for a "research" company (cover up agency for the CIA) located in a desert airplane hanger. On weekends he's a motorcyclist. Tom runs out of gas one night along a desert stretch of highway and stumbles into a Native American sweat lodge where he meets "The Chief" (Iron-Eyes Cody). After ingesting an ancient herbal tea, The Chief takes Tom on a hallucinogenic journey where he discovers that a super-computer is feeding the thoughts of every American to them. Each human's thoughts are recorded on to a unique dot-matrix card filed away in an underground bunker. The Chief trains Tom in the ways of "seeing" and gives him a new name, Nubian. Although Nubian's mind is freed by the herbal tea, its effects will only last for 48 hours before he forgets his name and his thoughts are taken over again by the super-computer. So Nubian heads out to find the underground bunker and burn his dot-matrix card, but there's one problem. His bulky, square-jawed coworker, Smith (Rock Hudson), starts following him and proves to be a relentless opponent of Nubian's ultimate goal.Film buffs note the underground chase sequence on dirt bikes as one of the best (filmed entirely in the Caldecott Tunnel in Oakland, CA). Although many subsequent films later tried to cash in on the success of The Dot-Matrix (Three Days of the Condor, Logan's Run, Billy Jack) none quite captured the politcal undertones that galvanized a generation and earned this film the number 97 slot on the AFI Top 100 list for the 70's.
Body: I hadn't seen Logan's Run since pre-DVD era. It's not quite as entertaining as I remembered, probably for the reasons explained quite well by the All Movie Guide review below. I love sci-fi movies, but so many of them make a huge unbelievable leap setting up the current year's scenario and the viewer is just supposed to accept it.Logan's Run is set in the 23rd century. So sometime between 1976 and 2276 no human knows what a marriage or family is, what individual committment is, what purity might mean -- artificial intelligence takes care of everyone and no one asks questions. The tough sell with Logan himself is that you never can tell exactly what his motives are. He *seems* to truly side with the rebels early on but then alerts the authorities to his location. Then a minute later he seems on board with the rebels again. Because Michael York's acting is so intense and over-the-top, you feel like you should believe the obvious. He says he's with Jessica, then he must be with Jessica.Still, it's a fun post-apocalyptic film and I'll still recommend it. I can't wait to see the remake since word is it'll be more focused on the book than the 76 feature.
Body: This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”. To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entry.Logan's RunI just plain enjoyed this movie. Yeah there are some pretty dated special effects, but they are still enchanting. Jenny Agutter is gorgeous. And Peter Ustinov is brilliant.I really just like the story idea. I've still never read the book or seen the TV show, but I am interested now. All of the different areas of this world, the outside with the destroyed remnants of our old world, just all of the different settings were part of what made it so interesting as well.I hear there is a remake in the works and I actually really don't mind that. I think there's a whole lot that could be done with the movie. And the original movie isn't perfect by any means. I think an updated version could have a lot more or different things to say given the current state of affairs in the world. As long as they can find someone as good as Ustinov for the old man role.Rating: 9/10
Former architect/advert director/David Fincher protege Joseph Kosinski has been hired to direct a remake of Logan’s Run. The script is to be written by Tim Sexton, who was nominated for an Oscar for Children of Men, and the film is expected to look more like the 1967 novel than the 1976 Michael York film.
Before remaking his own King of Kong as a feature for New Line, Seth Gordon will direct Four Christmases, a Vince Vaughn/Reese Witherspoon comedy that the studio is rushing into production in order to secure a December 2008 tentpole in case of a strike.
Sony Pictures Classics has bought a documentary about Jimmy Carter, titled Jimmy Carter: Man From Plains, and directed by Jonathan Demme. The film, which was produced by Jeff Skoll’s Participant Productions, will open at the Venice Film Festival before screening at Toronto.
