Title: 24 Hour Party People
Year: 2002
Director: Michael Winterbottom
Plot: This digital-video biopic uses the life of journalist, record mogul and club owner Tony Wilson to frame the story of the Manchester, England, music scene from the heyday of punk through the late-'80s "Madchester" era. As the founder of staunchly independent Factory Records, Wilson (Steve Coogan) shepherded the careers of doomed post-punk combo Joy Division, synth-pop superstars New Order and hedonistic louts the Happy Mondays. Along the way, he helped bring rave culture to Britain under the aegis of the legendary Hacienda nightclub. 24 Hour Party People follows Wilson from his conversion to punk at a seminal Sex Pistols concert through the suicide of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, the overwhelming success of New Order and the eventual dissolution of the Factory empire thanks to bad business decisions, underworld ties and the hedonistic excess of the Happy Mondays. Directed by Michael Winterbottom and written by frequent collaborator Frank Cottrell Boyce, 24 Hour Party People features cameos from a large number of Manchester music luminaries. The supporting cast includes Shirley Henderson and John Simm, both of whom appeared in Winterbottom's Wonderland, while the film's title comes from a Happy Mondays song. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide
Don Cheadle plays a radio personality in the 1960s. I bet this isn't the kind of DJ you're looking for, though. 3. Ghost World -- interesting, sad flick about compulsive record collectors. 2. Hustle & Flow -- flawed but affecting movie about a pimp trying to get into the recording business. 1. 24 Hour Party People -- Comedy based on Factory Records producer Tony Wilson. He fostered the rave scene in Manchester, England, and released New Order's records. In this movie you see the club scene transformed from a place for live music to a place for DJs and ecstacy atmosphere. And here's all the films on Spout that users tagged with "DJ." Body:
Can i put a shout in for "24 hour party people"
I liked this movie a lot, but I wonder if that's because I liked the music (Joy Division, The Happy Mondays, New Order). Steve Coogan is really funny in it too. I agree with the person who said Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle is both clever and lowbrow. I found the sequel to be less clever, less inspired. I think Dig! is a really entertaining documentary, although it gets creepy as Anton Newcombe sinks into a heavy heroin addiction. I'm glad Anton survived that period, but it didnt' seem to improve his character. From Hell features some pretty creepy, surreal scenes as Johnny Depp's character hallucinates on opium. (The trips give him insight into Jack the Ripper.) From Hell is far from perfect, but it sure creates an atmosphere of stoned, bloody, despairing London.
Body: Having lived through the events portrayed, followed the music press devotedly at the time...the story was a given...I had a good idea how it would look...."24 Hour Party People" gave the now dead Tony Wilson's perspective..Anton Corbijns photos from the NME were regulars on my bedroom wall, and as he has said, Joy Division's career was documented almost entirely in black and white..the film just had to be that way too,and it is brilliantly realised....I never did own a Joy Division record .I did admire the sheer heart-wrenching artistry ,but really found it too relentlessly melancholic. Maybe ,like Cobain a few years later, you could detect the creator remaning too immersed in the down side of the manic process of music making and performing. "Control" as a piece of moviemaking is a triumph for Anton Corbijn and the actors, who were determined to perform the music live..and they are brilliant,at least as good as the real thing. In one sequence ,it seems that we are hearing the recorded version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" which segues seamlessly into a live performance by the actors!...Apart from Sam Riley, Samantha Morton is just wonderful , Toby Kebbell is hilarious as manager Rob Gretton(portrayed by Paddy Consadine in "24 Hour,..")and Craig Parkinson is a totally believable Tony Wilson..Sad but superb...
Body: Wow, it was hard to pick a winner, but it’s frozenhamster for his 4/20 post-- “Ghostbusters: London Calling. An Edgar Wright Film …England is about to get slimed! When ghosts get a passport to Europe they take London by storm and it's up to a special team of British parapsychologists to save the city. Killing ghosts and making jokes, all before tea time.” Steve Coogan (24 Hour Party People) as Peter Venkman, Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz) as Ray, Martin Freeman (Tim on the British Office) and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz) as Winston. Besides being a really fun idea, I like it because it’s its own thing and doesn’t try to “replace” anyone, especially the inimitable Bill Murray. Second prize: minerwerks – your post is a tour de force of film history, and thank you for directing our thoughts to the demented world of David Heavener (Kill Crazy). I'd also like to mention lazyalchemist's post. I especially liked imagining Rainn Wilson (The Office’s Dwight) as Egon, Michael Cera (Juno) as the male student, and Alan Rickman (Sheriff of Nottingham!) provide the voice of Gozer. I can see Vince Vaughn doing a pretty good Peter Venkman, too. You’ll notice that Vince was the popular favorite for Venkman. I’ve got to salute some others:smcassidy also went with Vince Vaughn for Peter, but he followed that with two perfect sucker punches: Jerry O’Connell (Joe’s Apartment) for Ray, and David Duchovny (X-Files) as Egon. Luis Guzman (Punch-Drunk Love) would make a great Winston (thanks LMCBoy).Keira Knightley is a surreal and inspired choice for Gozer (thanks PlantPage55). And mercurial, I may have less faith than you do in the Broken Lizard (Super Troopers) comedy team, but these are good picks.
Body: I came back to this because of John Simm's brilliant performance in 'Life On Mars'...Just listing the cast, and the writer gives an idea of how good this is...John Simm"24 hour party people","Human Traffic", Bill Nighy,"Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy","love Actually" ,"Shaun Of the Dead" , "Hot Fuzz"etc ,David Morrissey, "Stoned","Basic Instinct 2",loads of fantastic T.V. KellyMacDonald,"Trainspotting","No Country For Old Men" James McAvoy." Last King of Scotland","Atonement"...written by Paul 'Shameless' Abbott...the story is one of 'political intrigue'...but it's really about the lives of the characters...Apparently,there is a Hollywood version in the pipeline.. Brad Pittas the John Simm character!..i hate it already! Latest news ,that i know of ,is that the writers strike may have claimed this production, with Brad Pitt dropping out... all i would suggest is...if you insist on "remaking" get the best, get John Simm, and keep it set in England...you know what? just forget it!...how could it possibly be better than this production anyway?
Several of our favorite blogs have noted the passing of British music impresario Tony Wilson. Manchester tastemaker Wilson (who was played by Steve Coogan in Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People) founded Factory Records, and is generally considered at least partially responsible for launching the careers of The Fall, OMD and Joy Division (and later New Order).
Wilson is portrayed by Craig Parkinson in Anton Corbijn’s upcoming Joy Division film Control, which will screen at the Toronto Film Festival before opening in the States in October. This gives me the excuse I’ve been waiting for to make the Control trailer our Clip of the Day. It’s embedded above.

I finally got to catch The Road to Guantanamo last night. This docu-drama was directed by Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People, Wonderland and 9 Songs) and Mat Whitecross. The film tells the story of 3 young men from England (but of Pakistani descent) who find themselves in the middle of Kondoz, Afghanistan (a Taliban stronghold) in the midst o the American attachs in 2001. As a result, they spent years in the prisons of Sheberghan and Guantanamo and were subjected to most of the now infamous interrogation techniques.

What I found most interesting about this film was the use of a wide range of story-telling elements. From reenactments to interviews to news footage, Winterbottom and Whitecross are able to capture the entirety of these men's ordeal...and most of the emotion behind it all.

An amazing job of filmmaking, certainly reminiscent of One Day in September...although a much more personal telling of a highly politicized story.

Body:
Rock and Roll and band stories have always been incredibly intriguing to me, I liked the recent "based-on-the-true-story-of..." ones like Walk the Line, 24 Hour Party People and the thrilling coming-of-age feeling of Almost Famous. But I have an extra warm spot in my heart for AIR's "Eating Sleeping Waiting and Playing, Radiohead's Meeting People is Easy and the New Order Story for example... They are invigorating, give you a feeling of a turning point in the world, a revolution. I've never seen loudQUIETloud, and I used to love the Pixies! I'm going to check that one out. Seen any of these? MeetingPeopleisEasy's detail page WalktheLine's detail page 24HourPartyPeople's detail page AlmostFamous's detail page AirEatingSleepingWaitingandPlaying's detail page and NewOrderNewOrderStory's detail page
The only one I've seen is 24 Hour Party People. I really liked the direction and Coogan's performance. I have a friend who loves Joy Division and New Order, so that's why he loved it so much and had me watch it. He may like that New Order film. I'm not sure if he's seen it. I liked the brief appearance by Mark from the Fall. I wish they had more of The Fall in the film. My other roommate, who I guess is on Spout now, is a huge Radiohead fan and has told me to see Meeting People Is Easy a couple times. Still haven't gotten around to that. I just started getting interested in Air, so maybe I'll check out that film too. Some of my other favorite bands, They Might Be Giants, and Pavement each have some documentaries about them out now. Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns) and Pavement: Slow Century. They were both quite enjoyable, but with Gigantic, there was too much of people just fawning over them. Trying to get other celebrities to recite their lyrics and just speak of their praises, it was too dorky. Not that TMBG aren't dorky, well they are more geeky. But they are much more savvy than the designs of that film in my opinion.
