Title: Death to Smoochy
Year: 2002
Director: Danny DeVito
Plot: Danny DeVito steps behind the camera for this darkly funny satire that combines elements of Barney and Friends with the real-life Pee-Wee Herman scandal while recalling the director's previously twisted black comedies Throw Momma From the Train (1987) and The War of the Roses (1989). Robin Williams stars as Randolph Smiley, a popular children's show host known professionally as "Rainbow Randolph." Dismissed from his beloved job when he's caught taking payola, Randolph becomes increasingly mentally unhinged and the target of his delusional revenge fantasies is Sheldon Mopes (Edward Norton), otherwise known as Smoochy, the fuchsia rhino character that has replaced him and soared to national popularity. Randolph soon learns that his ex-girlfriend and network executive Nora Wells (Catherine Keener) is sleeping with Sheldon, so he sets out to kill Smoochy, egged on by an unexpected ally: corporate president Marion Frank Stokes (Jon Stewart), who should be profiting from Smoochy's rise to fame, except for the fact that he and his cronies are unable to control the idealistic Sheldon's on-air agenda. Death to Smoochy (2002) co-stars Harvey Fierstein, Vincent Shiavelli, and Michael Rispoli. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide
Body:
Quiz Show - I like to mention this film about as much as I can. I think it's Redford's most underrated film and it's my personal favorite. It's about a scandal involving a game show but it was all of the intellectual banter scenes between Ralph Fiennes and Rob Morrow made this film so memorable. Also, John Turturro's performance was brilliant.

Network - At the time, Paddy Chayefsky tried to imagine the most ridiculous and absurd things that could happen on TV news... Frighteningly, it doesn't seem as ridiculous or absurd these days.
These are two I would defintely mention as favorites. Network however is probably the quintessential film about television and what it has become from my viewpoint though. The most hilarious movie about television though - "Weird Al" Yankovic's UHF. It even has a little spoof of Network. Although Death to Smoochy is a hilarious film about children's television which I think features Robin Williams' greatest performance of his carreer.
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind - George Clooney directed Charlie Kaufman's adaptation of Chuck Barris' (ehem) autobiography.... How could you go wrong? I remember when the book came out. I read some excerpts from it and thought how crazy it could be if the right people got involved to make the film. Body: WOW! I didn't realize when I first read the topic of these week's discussion, but after thinking about it and looking at more and more movies. REVENGE IS HUGE IN MOVIES!!! An astronomical number of films I've seen feature revenge prominently! You asked earlier if we find this repulsive. And honestly, seeing how prevalent it is, it DOES make me sick. Here are just a relatively very very small amount of movies I can think of. But pretty much any action, western, ganster, horror, or noir movie is going to feature some kind of revenge. And a lot of dramas and comedies even too. In the Company of Men - revenge on all women The Match Factory Girl - revenge against men Battle Royale - revenge against classmates Death to Smoochy - revenge against nice guys in rhino suits And of course the most iconic revenge movie of them all: Get Carter
Robin Williams and a title like World’s Greatest Dad reek of a possible broad comedy combining Father’s Day, RV and Mrs. Doubtfire. But would you believe it will be a dark comedy in which Williams’ son dies in “an apparent autoerotic accident”? What if I told you Bobcat Goldthwait is the writer-director?

Danny DeVito, who also had the honor of directing Williams in an audience-limiting black comedy, will make up the difference here by helming the young-adult-geared period piece The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Morgan Freeman, Pierce Brosnan and Atonement’s Saoirse Ronan star.
Speaking of Father’s Day, once-huge screenwriting duo Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel are the latest to rework Touchstone’s Charlie Kaufman-by-way-of-Zach Helm-wannabe reflexive musical Bob: The Musical.
Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards is on the fast track towards its eventual post-theatrical Showtime run with trade-reported rumors that Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio could costar. Let me just put it out there that Williams would be a great addition, as well.
From E3: Sony has finally launched its movie download service for its PlayStation, though it won’t feature any Universal titles (sorry, no Patch Adams), which are exclusive to Xbox 360, which of course also now works with Netflix streams.
The New York Film Festival will open with Lauren Cantet’s Palme D’or winner, The Class. Which will probably one day be remade with Williams starring.

Body: ...this movie is damn funny. But the humor is obviously a question of taste, as you either totally love this film or really, really hate it. I, for one, like pretty much anything Danny DeVito directs, and this is no exception. If you like your comedies dry and dark, this is the film for you. If not, don't bother because you will absolutely hate this film.
Body: I hate Tobey MacGuire but agree with you: that stupid innocence is essential. Without that doe-eyed "Who me?" it's all lost. I think, however, your original statement was a better one: Norton. Look at Death to Smoochy and tell me he couldn't played doe-eyed. Then look at American History X and tell me he couldn't play the bad ass that walked so brazenly into Jabba's palace. And the main reason I didn't offer any of my own ideas was a completely lack of them. The original trilogy is perfect the way it is and re-casting in my head is near-impossible.
