Title: Queen of the Damned
Year: 2002
Director: Michael Rymer, Paul Goldman
Plot: The second and third novels in author Anne Rice's popular book series The Vampire Chronicles provide the inspiration for this horror sequel starring ill-fated actress and recording artist Aaliyah, who was killed in an airplane crash before the film's release. Stuart Townsend is the vampire Lestat, who has awakened from a century-long slumber and turned his considerable energy to rock music. His vampirism identity mistaken for a gothic hard rock publicity stunt along the lines of Kiss or Marilyn Manson, he quickly becomes a pop music sensation. Lestat's powerful music reaches the ear of the slumbering Akasha (Aaliyah), the millennia-old "queen of the vampires" who was the first immortal bloodsucker. Akasha is soon free and embarking on a quest to seize control of the world with Lestat at her side. In the meantime, Lestat becomes an object of fascination for Jesse Reeves (Marguerite Moreau), member of a secret order studying the supernatural called the Talamasca, and a band of ancient vampires come together in an effort to stop Akasha, even though her destruction could potentially cause their own deaths. Queen of the Damned co-stars Lena Olin and Vincent Perez. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide
Body: OH I thought this discussion was going to be about FICTIONAL movies within movies ... like the one they're making within In Bruges, etc. Meta reference it is then... how about when Joanna Barnes who played "Vicky" in Disney's THE PARENT TRAP (the money--grubbing fiancee that the twins are trying to knock out of the picture) showed up as "Vicki," the mother of Meredith (the money-grubbing fiancee that the twins are trying to knock out of the picture) in the 1998 remake of The PARENT TRAP? (I hated that part of Oceans 12 ... I just thought that was so dumb. Julia Roberts pretending to be Julia Roberts... all so they could explain her pregnant belly?? Dumb.) Here's one - THE FRESHMAN. It's sort of a spoof of mobster movies and Marlon Brando plays the Godfather-esqe character ... though he's not really mafia. SON OF RAMBOW? That's the point of the whole movie. Doris Day played "Jan Morrow" in PILLOW TALK which was a referenct to Jeanne Moreau, the french actress. They were making a reference to Jeanne playing sexy roles while "Jan Morrow" was a straight-laced woman (with maybe a little something sexy hiding underneath.) Then we go to the Ewan McGregor/Renee Zelwegger flick - DOWN WITH LOVE. Which was an homage to Doris Day/Rock Hudson movies. (Some of the split scene comedy seemed to be funny to only me in the theater.) In QUEEN of the DAMNED some of Lestat's music videos are based on old horror movies like THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI. And I can't be positive on this one but I think the name Gillian in PRACTICAL MAGIC was a reference to Kim Novak's Gillian in BELL, BOOK and CANDLE.
Body: There is so much going on these days in the marketing of The Dark Knight (see Chris Thilk’s most recent update/summary here), but Warner Bros. may be wasting a lot of time and money on its campaigns. If we’re to believe an AP story from yesterday, there’s already enough interest in the Batman Begins sequel coming from two separate directions: comic book fandom (”the magnitude of a comic-book franchise with an illustrious 70-year history”) and, of course, the cult of celebrity death (”arguably the biggest movie featuring a posthumous role in Hollywood history.”).
The article highlights a number of posthumous film releases, including those of James Dean (Rebel Without a Cause and Giant), Spencer Tracy (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner), Will Rogers (Steamboat Round the Bend), Bruce Lee (Enter the Dragon), his son, Brandon Lee (The Crow), John Candy (Canadian Bacon and Wagon’s East!), Natalie Wood (Brainstorm), Carole Lombard (To Be or Not to Be), Oliver Reed (Gladiator), Clark Gable (The Misfits) and Aaliyah, whose Queen of the Damned is implied to have only been successful on account of the singer/actress’ accidental demise. However, none of these performers, the article argues, had the benefit of having such a blockbuster swan song as a Batman movie (coupled with the Terry Gilliam movie, of course, but Ledger’s actual final film is considerably less anticipated and so may be less notable). So certainly Ledger will be winning the contest for Biggest Posthumous Box Office.

Body: This movie was to the 10th power of extreme in the sexiness factory. Yeah, as most other vampire movies with at least decent quality are. Everyone would make a much better vampire in my opinion, and the soundtrack was mesmorizing. I <3.. <3.. loved it ! And it was interesting how this movie went off of Anne Rice's novel as did "Interview with the Vampire" almost a decade before. I just wish that they wouldn't have skipped "The Vampire Lastat" because I was hoping for an entire movie series just like the Vampire Chronicals novel series. That would have been sweetness and very tasty at the least, but I'm happy with what they did create into viewible content. This movie maked me happy in the panties. (;D) Yeah, lol.
Body: It is my opinion, and that of many others I know, that helped lend the entire feel to Queen of the Damned. Her youthful good looks, voice, and seemingly, brooding, woeful take on Jessie's whole demeaner, was perfect in that she is a young girl, who's been left without a family, except for an Aunt Majarette, who, herself, has been a victim of Akasha's, and her whole sense of family, and the love that comes with that, still remains, and she still possesses enough human feelings, that she strives to maintain enough of what is left of her family, to try and keep a balance between the Vampire community and that of the normal, human race. Jessie is a young girl caught in between both worlds, and what better(maybe too obvious) choice for her than that of Lestat, portrayed by the ever gorgeous, Stuart Townsend. She has the whole thing working for her in the wardrobe, looks, haircolor, build, and sadness that she should have had, to match Stuart Townsends, portrayal of Lestat. I loved Vincent Perez, as Marius. He, as well as, the motley crew of vampires following Aunt Maharette, added humor to the whole film
Body: I loved this movie so much, I bought it. It was Aaliyah's last movie, and she died before getting to see it finished. I haven't liked Tom Cruise sinceRisky Business and The Minority Report, and the idea of replacing him with Stuart Townsend, was a brilliant switch. Lestat is and always has, been portrayed as a very sexy vampire with a conscience. Stuart Townsends, portrayal of Lestat, was as it should have been. Sexy, brooding voice and personality combined, really brought the character to life for not only me, but my huge family and many friends. I have built an entire community out of this movie. Aaliyah, was so very beautiful and very convincing in her portrayal of the Queen, and as she was supposed to be played. The right looks, sound, and body language, are what made Aaliyah & Stuart Townsend the perfect pairing.
Body: I was a big fan of the Interview with the Vampire movie and actually read the book Queen of the Damned before seeing the film. I think that the whole franchise is pretty good, but they didn't do a very good job with the film. Anne Rice does a good job of using Queen of the Damned to help continue the story of Lestat's life after Interview, but they went cheapo on the sequel and instead of hiring Tom Cruise had another actor play Lestat. There were also a lot of holes that never got filled in from the first movie. Overall, the movie was entertaining and a good way to spend 2 hours, but it really didn't have the same bite that the first one had.
