Title: All About Lily Chou-Chou
Year: 2001
Director: Shunji Iwai
Plot: Wildly popular filmmaker Shunji Iwai breaks a three-year hiatus following his less than successful April Story with this elliptical drama about teenaged alienation, violence, and celebrity. The film centers on Yuichi Hasumi (Hayato Ichihara), an eighth grader who lives in a sleepy town in rural Japan with his mother, her boyfriend, and the boyfriend's son. At school he is beaten up and harassed by his former friend Hoshino. In order to scrape up the cash to meet Hoshino's daily extortion demand, Yuichi resorts to petty theft and shoplifting. At home he finds sanctuary with his favorite singer Lily Chou-Chou, for whom he has devoted a website called "Liliphilia." One day, he encounters on the net a fellow Lily-phile who goes by the handle "blue cat." As Hoshino's power grows, he demands that Yuichi tail fellow classmate Shiori Tsuda (Yu Aoi), who he is pimping out to older men. Yuichi's suffocating situation at school leads him to consider suicide, something he confesses to "blue cat" -- his only confidant. Things come to a head tragically at a long awaited Lily Chou-Chou concert. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide
Body: This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown round #2”. Read more about that here.Riri Shushu no subete (All About Lily Chou-Chou)Before I watched this I heard it described as a Japanese version of Kids. I like that movie and am interested in Japanese culture, but it didn't turn out to be a very good description in my opinion. I can see where they were coming from, but this movie seemed to be trying to grasp something bigger and profound than Kids. And I generally prefer a movie that keeps it simple to avoid getting to pretentious. This movie is more about some kind of search for something bigger through hero worship of a musician in this technological age. And the movie is quite long. Almost two and a half hours. The movie often shows text written on internet message boards on the screen, and I had trouble determining which characters on screen corresponded to which characters on the message board. There were some interesting and somewhat compelling moments, but all in all it was difficult to invest in the way the movie was trying to get me to.The most interesting thing was watching the special features and learning about how the movie was made. It actually started out as a website and message board where people could log on and post and in a way help create the story that eventually was turned into the film.Rating: 5/10
Body: This is a list for Round 2 of my movie year countdown viewing project as first described here. If by any strange chance whoever is reading this is actually following along you may notice that I'm still less than two thirds of the way through my original one. Well I'm starting this new one because as much as I love old movies it can get a little tedious watching just older movies. So I'm going to be blending my watching of the two lists together. Still focusing on the original one, but every once in a while sliding in the next entry from this new list.Again these new movies are limited to full length movies that are available on Netflix. And for this new round instead of picking a movie from every year, I will be picking a movie from every two years. For example the first movie must have come out during 2006 or 2007. The second movie must have come out in 2004 or 2005. The next in 2002 or 2003. You see.The list is not finished yet, but here is what I have decided so far. I will update this post later with the new flicks.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------1. Children of Men (2006)2. The New World (2005)3. Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs) (2002)4. Riri Shushu no subete (All About Lily Chou-Chou) (2001)5. Party Monster (1998)6. Hard Eight (1996)7. Smoke (1995)8. Jennifer Eight (1992)9.
