Plot: This haunted house chiller is the second feature from Dark Castle Entertainment, the mid-budget outfit put together in 1999 to remake the cheesy horror genre pictures of William Castle by his daughter, Terry Castle, and producers Gilbert Adler, Robert Zemeckis, and Joel Silver. Financially ravaged and widowed by a fire that is consuming him with guilt, Arthur Kriticos (Tony Shalhoub) is left to raise two kids on his own: beautiful teenager Kathy (Shannon Elizabeth) and grade school student Bobby (Alec Roberts). Good news suddenly drops into their lives when a lawyer visits and reveals that they have inherited a lavish home from a late uncle, Cyrus (F. Murray Abraham), an eccentric ghost hunter. The Kriticos family moves into the remote house only to discover its odd secret: the dwelling contains a state-of-the-art, elaborate system of moving glass walls that trap spirits inside. Soon the ghosts, which can only be seen through the use of special high-tech spectacles, are loose in the elaborate contraption and are none too thrilled about their predicament. With the exits sealed, the family members try to learn the secret of Uncle Cyrus' bizarre mansion and survive supernatural assaults with the help of sassy housekeeper Maggie (Rah Digga), neurotic psychic Rafkin (Matthew Lillard), and Kalina (Embeth Davidtz), an activist championing the civil rights of ghosts. Body: 5:54 - Here comes director James McTeague, Naomi Harris, and… “arch rival of Stephen Colbert….RAIN!” “Wow, it’s like mini-Twilight” someone says behind us when people start screaming for Rain. 5:51 - Now they’re on to Ninja Assassin, and when Joel Silver says the name “Rain” people go nuts. Although not quite the level of Twilight nuts that we witnessed earlier. Here’s a clip that Silver tells us is “Just for Comic-Con, so lets not talk about it to anyone else.” “Raised to be a warrior…Trained to be a killer.” Scenes of kids training, teenagers training, adults shedding tons of blood with knives. This movie is all done in red and black, even with red and black washing machines in a laundromat scene. Someone cue the Les Miserables soundtrack. Ninjas, swords, explosions, car chases… I don’t really know what this is about, but there’s a lot of screaming and flying blood. The ninja chucks a Chinese star at the screen, which turns into a little embellish between the words Ninja and Assassin in the logo. 5:50 - Now Silver is pimping out Whiteout, which we saw a lot of at last year’s Comic-Con. he basically tells us it stars Kate Beckinsale and Alex O’Loughlin from Moonlight, although “sadly, that’s over now.” They also have a movie called The Factory coming out, with John Cusack. “It’s a thriller, like Silence of the Lambs” according to Silver, and it’ll be out sometime in 2010. 5:46 - Writer Marc Andreyko and artist Jonathan Wayshak take the stage along with Erik Olsen again, to talk about the book, which hits stands in October. Will there be a movie version of Ferrymen? “That’s up to you guys!” says Erik. Based on the audience response, which is basically nil, I’d say that we won’t be seeing a Ferrymen movie anytime soon. 5:43 - Joel Silver is back to tell us about the Dark Castle comic book label that they’ve formed in conjunction with DC Comics’ Wildstorm imprint. They have their first book coming out called The Ferrymen, which they are about to show us a trailer for. “Sell your soul to the devil, and there will be Hell to pay.” is the tagline for the book, written by Marc Andreyko, who co-wrote the brilliantly creepy Torso with Brian Michael Bendis. 5:41 - Erik Olsen, Sophie Monk, Tad Hilgenbrick, and John Carchiette take the stage to talk about the film. Sophie Monk wants everyone to know “There’s some seriously twisted stuff in this movie that I wouldn’t want my dad to see.” No one asks any questions, ouch. Even though Sophie also tells us “I got so comfortable being covered in blood that I actually started going to the supermarket like that.” That’s method acting, folks. She also sings the creepy lullaby at the beginning of the trailer. 5:38 - Here’s a clip from The Hills Run Red, it opens with someone singing “Hush little baby, don’t say a word…” just so you know it’ll be creepy. Razor blades, buckets of blood, naked girls, a creepy guy in a mask. It’s Horror Formula 101. Coming to DVD in 2009. 5:35 - Joel Silver pops on out stage, all chubby, sweaty, and swarthy. He’s telling us how geek movies aren’t the “bastard stepchild” of the movies anymore. “Those pictures you just saw have made about a billion dollars. And we’ve decided to broaden out the label to do other types of movies.” Direct to video movies, that is: Return To House On Haunted Hill was last year, and this year is The Hills Run Red. 5:33 - They’re rolling out a clip reel to show us the “history of Dark Castle.” It’s a bunch of creepy movie scenes…there’s Thirteen Ghosts, Ghost Ship, Gothika, House of Wax, The Reaping…Creeptastic. Body: "The welcome mat is out. Step inside if you dare." Yes, you're very welcome to it. This movie was the bomb that blew me away. I absolutly love how everyone has their own story and yet are all connected in what is going down in this greatly paced movie. You are even able to get more into their individual lives with the Ghost Files on the DVD. It was sweetness that actually had you feeling sorry for these vicious killing machiens. Oh yeah, this movie is sick and gorey in a fabuous way.

Body: People who find Matthew Lillard and Shannon Elizabeth grating are likely the only ones who'll get a kick out of 13 Ghosts. They'll snicker when Lillard's psychic ghost-hunter Rafkin convulses with every foreboding flash of evil and applaud when Elizabeth's vapid, I'm-just-a-wide-eyed-wittle-girl Kathy gets the spacey smile wiped off her face Freddy Krueger-style. Then they'll count the interminable minutes before this mess of a movie is over. The most understandable part of the story involves Arthur (Tony Shalhoub) and his two kids (Alec Roberts and Elizabeth), who are left in financial straits after a fire claims both their house and Mom's life. A few months later, just when the family's had it with their cramped apartment, lack of money, and inept nanny--yes, even po' folk need a nanny--Arthur is told that he's inherited a fab house from his Uncle Cyrus (F. Murray Abraham) and can move in immediately. On the night that he and the children go to visit the place--a glass-and-gears, ugly/beautiful monstrosity that's really a machine--they learn the late Cyrus' evil secret, something about his "nasty habit of enslaving souls." Then things get supposedly spooky, with a few glimpses of dead people and a lot of frantic running around. 13 Ghosts borrows heavily from its more worthy forerunners, particularly The Shining and A Nightmare on Elm Street, but manages to replicate their setups without the terror: A dead woman in a bathtub, for example, somehow isn't quite as scary when she's got giant boobs. The movie spends more time explaining its elaborate plot (the house was designed by the devil, powered by the dead, yeah, yeah) than working up good scares, and the actors seem almost bored with each new development (after his boy innocently wanders off, Shalhoub attempts a feeble "My son is missing!" that might as well have been followed up with "Oh well, we all know he'll be fine"). In addition, the whole thing's capped off with a weird love-conquers-all resolution that seems meant to draw a few tears. On second thought, maybe that curvy corpse wasn't such a bad move after all.
