Title: At the Earth's Core
Year: 1976
Director: Kevin Connor
Plot: This is the second sci-fi adventure based on a novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first being 1975's The Land That Time Forgot. At The Earth's Core stars Doug McClure as explorer David Innes and Peter Cushing as professor Abner Perry, whose experimental "iron core" drill goes out of control and leads them to the underground kingdom of Pellucidar, where the Wing People are ruled by the monstrous, flying Mahars. With the help of the professor, Innes leads the Wing People in revolt against their evil masters. Monsters and mayhem abound in what is essentially a well-produced, if somewhat juvenile, knockoff of The Time Machine. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide
Body: There's this new show on The Cartoon Network, I can't recall the name at the moment, but it's a great piece of comedy that pokes fun at the late 70's, early 80's attempts at a TV hospital drama. I'd love to see what they do to this film, but there really is no need, as this film is as campy as they come. It's truly everything you read about from this era - guys in puffy latex dinosaur costumes, terrible lighting, wooden acting, etc. Peter Cushing must've known he was making a stinker, as he seems to be hamming it up for all it's worth, and ultimately becomes one of the most entertaining things about this film. I can't help but think of Phil Hartman (R.I.P. dear sir) when I hear the name Doug McClure, who made me laugh throughout this film merely because of the Simpson reference. This is one of those "so bad, they're good" films, but generally, I do not care for these films, thus the "lost interest" rating. But YOU may like it...
Body: Growing up this was one of my favorites. Now I that I am older, I am revisiting the films I loved as a child. This film starts off just as I remembered it. I am transported back to 1986, but then it happens. And it happens so quick and so horribly wrong. Maybe it's the production design, or the acting, or the story. It's probably all of that, but most of all It's probably the guys in monster suits holding dolls to represent humans. As I wave goodbye to 1986, I wish I had just left this one alone and kept my memories.
