Title: Highlander II: The Quickening
Year: 1991
Director: Russell Mulcahy
Plot: At the end of Highlander, Juan Ramirez (Sean Connery) died and Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) was rendered mortal. "Highlander 2: The Quickening begins in 1999 when Connor solves the problem of an ever-depleting ozone layer on the earth by devising a giant shield around the entire planet. The earth is saved, except for the fact that it is now a continual 99 degrees, and the earth is plunged into 24 hours of darkness. 40 years later, Connor is an elderly man with liver spots, heading out for the opera. Then there is a flashback of Connor recalling his halcyon days on the planet Zeist hundreds of years earlier. Back on Zeist, Connor and Ramirez led a futile coup against the ruling dictator, Katana (Michael Ironside), that caused them to be banished to Earth. Back in the future, Katana sends a pair of wacky goons to kill Connor. When Connor lops off their heads, he is now young again...and immortal. Just the right time to meet the attractive scientist Louise Marcus (Virginia Madsen), who has discovered that the shield around the earth is no longer needed since the ozone layer has repaired itself. But, unfortunately, the shield is in the clutches of an evil cartel who wants to control the earth's resources. Connor and Louise team up to battle the cartel while Katana sends out more emissaries to get Connor. Ramirez, although supposedly dead, also makes an appearance in the 21st century -- garbed in full Scottish regalia. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide
In what may be the greatest, albeit most exploitive, TV spot I’ve seen in awhile, Robert Downey Jr., as Tony Stark (aka Iron Man), shows up at the beginning of a new commercial for The Incredible Hulk. Of course we’ve known about the cameo for some time, mainly because nothing is safe from the “spoiler nation” of the Interweb, but most of us were probably not expecting to actually see it for real until the movie arrives in theaters (it opens Friday). I guess this is smarter than hiding the cameo after the end credits, a la Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in Iron Man, in order to somewhat maintain denial even during the film’s theatrical run.
Hopefully TV audiences won’t be fooled into thinking Downey has a bigger part in the film. In a way, the cameo seems to lift the prestige and appeal of The Incredible Hulk, yet it also really seems like a cheap ploy to get us excited about an otherwise crappy looking comic book movie. Still, it wouldn’t be the first time a movie unfairly sold itself on a cameo appearance. Highlander II: The Quickening (”starring” Sean Connery) comes to mind, for example. Actually, now that I’m comparing it to that film, I may be even less interested in The Incredible Hulk than before. Fortunately, if there’s any more to the Stark cameo than visible above, someone will put it up on YouTube for those of us who skip it.

Body: Once upon a time there was a movie of high adventure and epic battles. It was a movie filled with heroes and villains, with lovely lasses and sweeping vistas. During the course of it, lives were lost and lessons were learned, some harsh and some tender. Sitting in that faraway theater I learned about love in the face of loss, about becoming who you are even if you don’t fully understand it, about standing up to your fears, and most of all I learned that there can be only one. When the sequel to that movie finally rolled into my local cineplex, another harsh lesson was delivered. This time I learned that everything I thought I knew WAS A LIE! There wasn’t just one, but a whole planet of ones. I learned that I wasn’t watching a fantasy, but instead a terrible sci-fi wreck of a film. I learned that Michael Ironside needs to pick better films. And, the worst of it was, I learned that sometimes you can’t go back, no matter how bad you wish that you could. Damn you, Highlander 2. Damn you to hell.
Body: Widely accepted as one of the worst sequels of all time, Highlander II takes the story of an ostensibly mystical race of immortals, fighting for the prize of ultimate power, and redefines it as a sci-fi tale, where the immortals are in fact alien beings exiled to earth, with the prize being the ability to return home, or grow old and die on earth. When Connor McLoud, now an old man, kills another alien who has just been sent to earth, he is made immortal once again; and must use his abilities, along with help from Ramirez (who, apparently, Connor can bring back from the dead just by calling his name, which kind of makes you wonder why he took this long to do so), must battle an oppressive future government to save the world. This movie was so bad that it spawned what I refer to as ?The Highlander Rule?, which says that when a movie sequel reaches a certain level of awful, I simply refuse to acknowledge its existence when speaking of the franchise.
