Title: The Hidden Fortress
Year: 1958
Director: Akira Kurosawa
Plot: Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress (original Japanese title: Kakushi Toride No San Akunin) stars Minoru Chiaki and Kamatari Fujiwara as a pair of misfit soldiers. Running from the enemy after a disastrous defeat, the two soldiers fall in with general Toshiro Mifune, who is in search of a huge cache of gold. Mifune is also desirous of freeing princess-in-exile Misa Uehara from the clutches of the evil victorious army. Several large and small battles ensue before Mifune can realize his goal. If the plot of Hidden Fortress sounds vaguely familiar to you, try this exercise: substitute two robots for Chiaki and Fujiwara, Mark Hamill for Mifune, and Carrie Fisher for Uehara. George Lucas himself admitted that Hidden Fortress was a principal inspiration for his Star Wars saga; stretching the point farther, both Hidden Fortress and Star Wars had their roots in John Ford's The Searchers. Originally released in a 137-minute form, The Hidden Fortress was sliced to ribbons by its American distributors, and only recently has been completely restored. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Body:

Dear Movie Lovers, I have reached a point where I can no longer make corrections to films and the database on a per request basis. As you may know, we license our film content from AllMovie.com (the source for most major film sites). If you find a film that needs to be corrected or have info added to it (this includes duplicates), please submit it to AllMovie.com here: http://www.allmovie.com/contact/corrections thanks for taking the time to report errors, hopefully AllMovie.com will be able to process your requests in a timely manner. Cheers, Christi
Christi, I reported the duplicate entries I previous mentioned to allmovie.com and they deleted the duplicate entry!! It no longer appears at allmovie.com. However, it still appears on Spout!!! Does Spout's database only get updated on a periodic basis? Will this eventually be deleted automatically? What's going on?? Again, here are the duplicates on Spout: The_Hidden_Fortress's detail page Three_Rascals_in_the_Hidden_Fortress's detail page
Hey Rizzo, Sorry for delayed responses. Yeay for AMG! And yes, the Spout database does a monthly pull from AMG on the 15th I think, so you might not see it update on here until later. BTW, Seely does still work here, but mostly on Spoutblog. Cheers, Christi
Body:
What a list. Quite an impact by one writer! I still need to see Harakiri & Dodes, but I'll be shocked if they dethrone Hidden Fortress. That was my first Hashimoto film and it hasn't been topped by others on this list yet. Most of the rest are tied for 2nd place. Hard to have a list where Seven Samurai and Sword of Doom are included but aren't ranked first!
Interesting, because Hidden Fortress is actually my least favorite of those I've seen (although still very good!). Maybe I was just in the wrong mood or need to see it again! I remember first time watching it knowing that it was an inspiration for the Star Wars story in a way. Maybe I was expecting something other than what it really was.
Body: I'm a huge Kurosawa fan. Seven Samruai is #2 behind Hidden Fortress. Talk about a gem! After watching HF, I bought a region-free, 2-volume collection of Kurosawa stuff. Body: Well, my initial reaction is *BARF*Although I know they've already remade this movie with The Magnificent Seven, and although I've never seen it I hear it's quite good. And don't forget how many times Yojimbo was essentially remade with success. And even Star Wars had some elements of The Hidden Fortress.Maybe there is something about Kurosawa that lends itself to good remakes. Have there been any really bad ones? I'm sure there have been, but I just can't think of any right now.I'm sure it requires the right filmmakers remaking it.
