Plot: Director Bruce Paltrow teams with his Oscar-winning daughter Gwyneth Paltrow for this road comedy with music. Paltrow plays Liv, a struggling professional singer whose meets her father, Ricky Dean (Huey Lewis), for the first time at the funeral of her mother. As it turns out, both Liv and Ricky supplement the income from few-and-far-between gigs by singing in karaoke contests, and soon father and daughter are competing on the same circuit. Meanwhile, Todd Woods (Paul Giamatti), a salesman who has grown disenchanted with his job, his family, and his life, picks up a hitch-hiker named Reggie Kane (Andre Braugher), and during a stop at a tavern, they discover they make a good duet team while belting out a version of "Try A Little Tenderness." And waitress Suzi Loomis (Maria Bello) sweet talks Billy (Scott Speedman), a cabbie, into driving her to Omaha, where the national karaoke finals will determine who does the best job of singing along with the records, as the lives of these six characters begin to intersect. Body: The song “I Thought I Lost You,” from the soundtrack to Disney’s animated Bolt, is intended as an innocent duet between a young girl and her pet dog, and lyrically there’s not one hint that it’s anything more, but that doesn’t stop me from thinking there’s something terribly creepy about the above music video. Maybe it’s that villainous goatee that John Travolta is sporting. Or maybe it’s just weird to think of the purpose of the song and then imagine Travolta being the beloved pet of Miley Cyrus. The only thing worse, perhaps, would be if Billy Ray Cyrus were the voice of the film’s title character. And that reminds me of the also relatively creepy duet from Duets, in which a father and daughter (played by Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow) perform Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin’” at karaoke. Now, that song is certainly more sexual than the Bolt track. But either way, it’s just a song, right? What kid hasn’t innocently sung a love song duet with his mom or her dad? Or performed a karaoke rendition of “Afternoon Delight” with his or her aunt or uncle? For a great episode of Arrested Development that deals with the subject of creepy dueting, check out another clip after the jump. Body: I walked into this film knowing absolutely nothing about it, except that Gwenth Paltrow was in it. I left very disappointed. The story follows a set of characters around the midwest as they all eventually head towards a Karaoke competition in Nevada. The movie relies heavily on character interaction in the film and during the film you explore a midlife crisis, an absent dad reunited with his daughter and an ex-con on a karaoke crime spree.The movie tried to take itself too serious and at the end you feel like you invested a lot of emotional energy into the movie, but with very little payoff. The setting for the film could have inspired a sitcom, but it doesn't go off well as a drama. While the whole time I wanted to like the characters, at the end of the day their neverending quest for the next karaoke bar seemed like the wrong motivators. I'd stay away from this one unless it's just you, a bunch of your girlfriends and a half gallon of Hagan Daaz.
