While Peter is under hypnosis, the therapist keels over and dies. As he never snaps out of his hypnotic state, Peter has a new outlook on life. If something annoys him, he just ignores it or walks away from it. He is completely relaxed and enjoying life for the first time in a long time. On Monday, Peter skips work and sleeps in. <strong>Body:</strong> I was thinking this weekend about how many films I've seen relating to the everyday working experience that I've absolutely loved.  There's a ton out there--probably because so many people are a bit disollusioned and lost in their careers. What are your Top 5? I'll start it off with mine: Office Space Anyone who's ever worked in IT or a related field knows the pain of Peter Gibbons all too well.  Overworked, underappreciated and just a nameless face in a cubicle.  Bonus: I am often compared to Michael Bolton. Clerks I think everyone has friends like Dante and Randall.  They didn't really go anywhere after highschool and are still working at the same pizza/video/convenience store, in the same town.  They are a bit neurotic, but always fun. Waiting I've never worked in the restaurant industry, but my many friends who have assure me that this film is nearly a documentary. Employee of the Month This is 'Waiting' for anyone who's worked in retail.  After working at Hobby Lobby in the warehouse for a few years, I have a deep, deep appreciation for this film.  Bonus: we constructed an 'employee lounge' on top of the pallet rack out of boxed Christmas trees just like in the film, years before it came out. Garden State Great film about the post-college career disollusionment (quarter-life crisis).<br/>

      <title>Spout Post: 10 Underappreciated Coen Bros. Actors</title>

Everybody remembers the bigger name Coen Bros. regulars, such as John Turturro, Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, Frances McDormand, Billy Bob Thornton and now George Clooney. And of course, there are the one-shot stars, like Nicolas Cage, Gabriel Byrne, Jeff Bridges, William H. Macy, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julianne Moore, Paul Newman, Albert Finney, Woody Harrelson, Tim Robbins and now Brad Pitt and John Malkovich. But who ever talks about Michael Lerner? He received an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in Barton Fink, yet he never seems to get the same kind of respect that Javier Bardem gets, and it’s not just because Bardem won the award for No Country for Old Men.
With their new film, Burn After Reading, the Coens have again recast some lesser known character actors that I hope get the recognition they deserve. Both Richard Jenkins and J.K. Simmons have previously appeared in the Coens’ films, but each has seriously risen in notability since their last collaboration with the filmmakers. Hopefully, they’ll continue to be cast by the brothers.
Obviously, all my favorite Coen Bros. actors can’t be in every Coen Bros. movie (especially since some of them are dead). And interestingly enough, the brothers’ next film, A Serious Man, is being cast with (so far) only actors they’ve never employed. So, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the less-recognized actors and actresses who have done tremendous work for Joel and Ethan, not so much in the hopes that they’ll be re-employed (some can’t be) but in the general interest of giving them some much-needed praise.


Tony Shalhoub (Barton Fink; The Man Who Wasn’t There)
At the rate he’s going with his Coens film appearances, he’s due for another role come 2011. And seeing as his hit TV series Monk may be in its final season, the guy is probably going to be available. I’ve highlighted his performance as the defense attorney Freddy Riedenschneider, from The Man Who Wasn’t There, above, but be sure to also take another look at his portrayal of movie producer Ben Geisler, from Barton Fink, which can also be seen on YouTube.

Stephen Root (O Brother, Where Art Thou?; The Ladykillers; No Country for Old Men)
I got so excited when I saw Root in No Country for Old Men, but he was again underutilized. After appearing in three of the Coens’ films, the actor best known for playing Milton in Office Space and Jimmy James on TV’s News Radio, is due for a more substantial role. In fact, he really needs to be getting better parts in general, not just in the works of the Coens. In the video above he can be seen as the blind character credited only as “Radio Station Man.”

Jon Polito (Miller’s Crossing; Barton Fink; The Hudsucker Proxy; The Big Lebowski; The Man Who Wasn’t There)
He’s been really great in five Coen Bros. films, so it’s a shame he’s not as well-known as Turturro or Buscemi. For some reason, only the Coens seem to employ him in worthwhile roles, and even they haven’t been able to give him as juicy a part as he had in Miller’s Crossing. He really shines here, and he’s got some memorable lines (”did somebody hit you?”; “always put one in the head”). In the selected scene, Polito opens the film with a monologue about ethics. I love it when he gets so angry that his whole bald head turns bright purple. For a great montage of his work, produced for his reception of a special award at the Cinequest San Jose Film Festival, check out this other clip, too.

Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Big Lebowski)
Obviously by including Hoffman on this list I don’t mean to claim he’s an underappreciated actor. He’s certainly recognized as one of the best we’ve got. But his bit work in The Big Lebowski often goes forgotten, despite it being yet another fine performance by Hoffman, even for such a minor role as the Big Lebowski’s assistant, Brandt. The Oscar-winner more recently worked with the Coens for a radio play titled “Sawbones,” but it would be great to see him work with the brothers again on camera.

Trey Wilson (Raising Arizona)
One of my favorite scenes in my favorite Coen Bros. movie (Raising Arizona) is the one in which the late, great Trey Wilson, as Nathan Arizona, gets extremely frustrated with the police investigating his son’s kidnapping (best line: “They were jammies. They had Yodas ‘n’ shit on ‘em!”). Wilson’s part isn’t huge, but he makes it seem like it is. And considering how many talented character actors appear in the film, it’s no small feat to deliver such a standout performance. Unfortunately, none of his scenes are separately available on YouTube, but the above clip is at least primarily the police investigation scene.

M. Emmet Walsh (Blood Simple; Raising Arizona)
I must confess something horrible: while compiling this list, I discovered that M. Emmet Walsh is alive. See, I’ve always confused him with J.T. Walsh, who died ten years ago. And when planning out this piece, it was constantly in my mind that I was featuring two deceased actors — Trey Wilson and M. Emmet. I guess it hasn’t helped my confusion that M.E. Walsh hasn’t really done much of worth in the decade since we lost J.T. (Roger Ebert’s “Stanton-Walsh Rule” was said to be broken after Walsh appeared in Wild Wild West). Anyway, I’m ecstatic that he’s still around, and my desire to celebrate his Coen Bros. roles isn’t changed one bit. In an even smaller part than Wilson’s, Walsh is also quite memorable in Raising Arizona as H.I.’s machine shop co-worker who won’t stop yapping (”… his sandwich in one hand, the fuckin’ head in the other…”). But it’s for his more prominent role in Blood Simple, as a scummy private dick, that the rarely leading actor should be remembered when he actually does pass on. I’m always astonished that after giving such a terrific performance in their debut, Walsh wasn’t utilized by the Coens more. Also, they probably should have worked again with Dan Hedaya, another great character actor who can be seen opposite Walsh in the selected clip from Blood Simple above.

Michael Badalucco (Miller’s Crossing; O Brother, Where Art Thou?; The Man Who Wasn’t There)
It was great seeing Badalucco cast in a major role for The Man Who Wasn’t There, but I get more excited over his short but recurring stint as George “Don’t Call Him Babyface” Nelson in O Brother. His portrayal of the in-and-out, seemingly bipolar bank robber, he’s like a regenerating firecracker, exploding then fizzling then later exploding again. I wish there were more of his scenes available online, but since his police chase bit seems only to be found in Italian, I’ve highlighted his final appearance in the film, which can be seen near the end of the above clip.


William Forsythe (Raising Arizona)
If you were to judge Forsythe based on just any random role, such as his FBI agent from last year’s 88 Minutes, you might accept him as simply a serviceable supporting actor, hardly someone to honor in even one-tenth of a list on a blog. But look at a more selective sampling of his work — specifically his performances in The Waterdance, Dick Tracy, Palookaville and Raising Arizona — and you’ll see that he has more range than he’s probably given credit for. While watching him as the rather simple-minded Evelle Snoats in Arizona, in fact, I often forget that he’s the same guy that was later reunited with Nicolas Cage (as a fellow FBI agent) in The Rock. Though he’s somewhat overshadowed by his onscreen big brother, played by John Goodman, he does get in a good amount of memorable lines and actions, as you can see in the clip above.

John Carroll Lynch (Fargo)
Norm Gunderson is such a thankless role, especially since it’s so overshadowed by the Oscar-winning performance by Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson. But it came early in Lynch’s career, which is still not rising as fast as it maybe should be, and now it’s time for the understated yet often hilarious and/or creepy actor to properly appear in a more comedic Coen Bros. part. For lack of a precise clip, I’ve featured a montage reel of Lynch’s work, which includes one of his scenes from Fargo as well as some of his more showy roles, like his recurring cross-dressing character from The Drew Carrey Show. Another one of his scenes as Norm can also be found at the end of another montage reel specifically spotlighting his comedy work.

Beth Grant (No Country for Old Men)
You kind of want to hate her for how inadvertently awful her character is in No Country, but the Coen Bros. are too good at giving us such wonderfully irksome characters, like Glen (Sam McMurry) in Raising Arizona, Gaear (Peter Stormare) in Fargo and Homer Stokes (Wayne Duvall) in O Brother. And Grant is so good at delivering such delectably despicable performances that her part as Carla Jean’s mother left me wanting more. Considering the Coens rarely reuse previously employed actresses (McDormand is a constant probably more because she’s Joel’s wife than because she’s such a talent, and both Holly Hunter and Jennifer Jason Leigh have just barely been recast), it would be even more of a treat if they someday work with Grant again. Between the distinctness of her physical features and voice and her ability to be so nasty makes her a perfect candidate for future Coen Bros. movies. Because no clips of her in No Country could be found — plus most of her scenes would include spoilers anyway — I’ve showcased her other most memorable and hated character from Donnie Darko. In an even smaller part than Wilson’s, Walsh is also quite memorable in Raising Arizona as H.I.’s machine shop co-worker who won’t stop yapping (”… his sandwich in one hand, the fuckin’ head in the other…”). But it’s for his more prominent role in Blood Simple, as a scummy private dick, that the rarely leading actor should be remembered when he actually does pass on. I’m always astonished that after giving such a terrific performance in their debut, Walsh wasn’t utilized by the Coens more. Also, they probably should have worked again with Dan Hedaya, another great character actor who can be seen opposite Walsh in the selected clip from Blood Simple above.

Michael Badalucco (Miller’s Crossing; O Brother, Where Art Thou?; The Man Who Wasn’t There)
It was great seeing Badalucco cast in a major role for The Man Who Wasn’t There, but I get more excited over his short but recurring stint as George “Don’t Call Him Babyface” Nelson in O Brother. His portrayal of the in-and-out, seemingly bipolar bank robber, he’s like a regenerating firecracker, exploding then fizzling then later exploding again. I wish there were more of his scenes available online, but since his police chase bit seems only to be found in Italian, I’ve highlighted his final appearance in the film, which can be seen near the end of the above clip.


William Forsythe (Raising Arizona)
If you were to judge Forsythe based on just any random role, such as his FBI agent from last year’s 88 Minutes, you might accept him as simply a serviceable supporting actor, hardly someone to honor in even one-tenth of a list on a blog. But look at a more selective sampling of his work — specifically his performances in The Waterdance, Dick Tracy, Palookaville and Raising Arizona — and you’ll see that he has more range than he’s probably given credit for. While watching him as the rather simple-minded Evelle Snoats in Arizona, in fact, I often forget that he’s the same guy that was later reunited with Nicolas Cage (as a fellow FBI agent) in The Rock. Though he’s somewhat overshadowed by his onscreen big brother, played by John Goodman, he does get in a good amount of memorable lines and actions, as you can see in the clip above.

John Carroll Lynch (Fargo)
Norm Gunderson is such a thankless role, especially since it’s so overshadowed by the Oscar-winning performance by Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson. But it came early in Lynch’s career, which is still not rising as fast as it maybe should be, and now it’s time for the understated yet often hilarious and/or creepy actor to properly appear in a more comedic Coen Bros. part. For lack of a precise clip, I’ve featured a montage reel of Lynch’s work, which includes one of his scenes from Fargo as well as some of his more showy roles, like his recurring cross-dressing character from The Drew Carrey Show. Another one of his scenes as Norm can also be found at the end of another montage reel specifically spotlighting his comedy work.

Beth Grant (No Country for Old Men)
You kind of want to hate her for how inadvertently awful her character is in No Country, but the Coen Bros. are too good at giving us such wonderfully irksome characters, like Glen (Sam McMurry) in Raising Arizona, Gaear (Peter Stormare) in Fargo and Homer Stokes (Wayne Duvall) in O Brother. And Grant is so good at delivering such delectably despicable performances that her part as Carla Jean’s mother left me wanting more. Considering the Coens rarely reuse previously employed actresses (McDormand is a constant probably more because she’s Joel’s wife than because she’s such a talent, and both Holly Hunter and Jennifer Jason Leigh have just barely been recast), it would be even more of a treat if they someday work with Grant again. Between the distinctness of her physical features and voice and her ability to be so nasty makes her a perfect candidate for future Coen Bros. movies. Because no clips of her in No Country could be found — plus most of her scenes would include spoilers anyway — I’ve showcased her other most memorable and hated character from Donnie Darko. <strong>Body:</strong> With this Labor Day Weekend (for those of us living in the United States - sorry for those elsewhere) coming to a close, I felt it apropos to dedicate this week's theme to all the films that celebrate those hardworking people out there that flat out hate their jobs. Undoubtedly the two movies that are referenced most often when one tries to relate their hatred for their work are Office Space and Clerks. Whether you love 'em or hate 'em, both films have managed to reach an almost iconic level of quotability among a relativly broad spectrum of society. For whatever reason I've been drawn to the darker side of this sub-genre of film, those films like American Psycho, Secretary, Fight Club and Waiting... (if you didn't think a movie with Dane Cook putting his pubic hair in someone's food is dark, you need to watch it again) which show the extreme lengths working a job that isn't right for you can have on your psyche. On the lighter side, The Devil Wears Prada, Empire Records, 9 to 5 , Jerry Maguire and Super Troopers are all good for a few laughs (or tears depending on your current emotional state). Lastly, I felt that The Kid Stays in the Picture was a great portrait of Hollywood and someone that managed to maintain a successful career in it without jumping out a window or going to prison. So hurry up and share you favorite work related films before you have to go to sleep in order to get your precious 7 hours before going back to the grind tomorrow where we all know you're just gonna pretend to work while you sit and browse Spout . . . or porn.<br/>

Comcast, Paramount Pictures and a handful of others have all latched on to it as a way to communicate with customers, acting not only as a distribution platform but a conversation hub and customer service hub as well. Some of the biggest names in the social media marketing world are spending serious time brainstorming how to use Twitter for marketing, debating its usefulness and otherwise hashing out a series of best practices for utilizing the service.
Media outlets have also turned to Twitter for many of the same reasons. TV Guide, Fox News and even Spout have a presence there to, again, promote their content and, in some cases, even engage in a back-and-forth with readers.
But did you know that Darth Vader is twittering? How about Cobra Commander?

In one of the most widely-discussed instances of fictional characters with Twitter accounts, the staff of Sterling Cooper - the ad agency in the hit AMC series Mad Men - have all been posting 140 charcter status updates. Initially thought to be an official effort by the cable channel, it was later found that no, these were fan efforts that almost fell victim from what was later construed as “miscommunication“, but which at first apparently looked like a take-down notice filed under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
With all these movie and TV characters expressing themselves, we thought it would be fun to see who our followers on Twitter thought should make their thoughts known in 140-characters or less. Here’s what we got back.
Characters played by Val Kilmer appeared twice in the feedback. @treobenny put in his vote for Doc Holiday from Tombstone and Ryan Budke nominated Gay Perry from Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.
@sabine24 put forth a bunch of names, including Frank N. Furter, Stanley Kowalski and Jack Sparrow. The Big Lebowski’s The Dude got the nod from @povertyjetset and @champura went deep into the well to bring out Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood. @tigershungry went even further for Pistachio Disguisey, Dana Carvey’s character from 2002’s Master of Disguise.
Finally, @ryananderson will be taken out back and horse-whipped for suggesting Jar Jar Binks.
In addition to this worthy list of nominations, here’s who we’d like to see on Twitter:
The Guru Pitka (The Love Guru): Yes, the movie might have bombed and forced Mike Myers back into re-evaluating Austin Powers 4, but the pithy Pitka’s bumper-sticker life lessons are made for the format.
Carl Dehham (King Kong): “Rough day. Locals speak of something we think translates to ‘big angry monkey.’ But filming continues. Ann seems wary, tho.”
Capt. Jeffrey T. Spaulding (Animal Crackers): Come on. I’m a little ashamed of everyone - and myself - that a Groucho Marx character wasn’t among the first ones I thought of. I’m going with Spaulding simply because I think he gets off some better one-liners than my other choice, Duck Soup’s Rufus T. Firefly.
Wolverine (X-Men): “Stabbed guy with claws. Had beer.” (repeat time and time again.)
Gypsy (Mystery Science Theater 3000): The robot in charge of the Satellite of Love’s operations would be the ideal candidate to report on how Joel, Crow and Servo are holding up, as well as throw the occassional “@drforrester: You suck.”
Master Control Program (Tron): Every post would conclude with “end of line.” Plus, he could brag about how easy it is to crack into Windows servers.
Isaac Davis (Manhattan): Imagine the possibilities of Woody Allen’s character obsessing over the minutia of his relationships as well as sending missive after missive about his love of New York City and Ingmar Bergman film to all his followers. (Side note: Mariel Hemingway’s character Tracy would, on the other hand, have a Tumblr blog.)
Peter Gibbons (Office Space): Maybe it’s a cop-out to think of Gibbons venting on his frustrations with his boss on Twitter (likely under a pseudonym to protect his shaky job) but it would still be pretty funny.

<strong>Body:</strong> This is the &ldquo;Dilbert&rdquo; panel I've always wanted to see. A fed-up office drone, sick of the confines of his cubicle, unleashes holy hell on his condescending superiors and clocks a duplicitous colleague in the jaw with his keyboard and heads out for adventure with Angelina Jolie. While &ldquo;Wanted's&rdquo; lead Wesley (played by James McAvoy) does just that, his character is taken from a different comic altogether. It's comic origins (based on one by Mark Millar and J. G. Jones) are felt throughout the film's reality-relinquishing first hour, until it turns on itself in the final act and decides to play things with a straight face. If only Cat-bert could have sauntered in to slap some sense into him. Let's start with the good. Wesley's life is torn straight from the pages of &ldquo;Office Space:&rdquo; a patronizing supervisor takes special glee in the daily ass-chewing she gives the young man, a co-worker enjoys showing Wesley's girlfriend his &ldquo;O&rdquo; face (if that line makes no sense to you, please go rent the aforementioned comedy); and his anxiety level is suppressed only with the help of a bottomless prescription jar of medication. On a particular day to refill said meds, Wesley's found himself in the middle of a pharmacy shootout, aided by a slinky Angelina Jolie. One fabulously outrageous car chase later (in which Wesley is literally scooped up into her shiny red sports car), the young man is told that he is the son of a recently deceased world-famous assassin and who has been selected to step into his shoes. It's a cinematic flip-of-the-bird to any and all potential &ldquo;blockbusters&rdquo; this summer and, for a while, it revs along at such a high rate of speed that it could mean business. There are many reasons for this. Primarily, lead McAvoy (a British actor known best stateside in the original &ldquo;Chronicles of Narnia&rdquo; and &ldquo;Atonement,&rdquo; but whose range is best demonstrated in a little 80s-centric indie called &ldquo;Starter for Ten&rdquo;) is such an engaging host to this frenetic freak-out. As someone who starts off with as a whiny Zack Braff clone, he is heartily believable in his transformation into a hitman resembling a young Russel Crowe. In a film that defies all laws of physics, gravity and logic, his performance in an undercurrent of stability. Jolie takes her second role this month as a tigress &ndash; first, quite literally in &ldquo;Kung Fu Panda,&rdquo; and here as a felonious feline known only (and quite accurately) as Fox. Sure, it's a role she can do in her sleep, but, honestly, I have no problem watching anything Jolie does in her sleep. And, finally, step asideBorat. You are no longer the &ldquo;it boy&rdquo; of Kazakhstan. Those honors go to one Timur Bekmambetov, director of this otherworldly fever-dream of an action film. Lauded in his homeland for the candy-coated action vampire films &ldquo;Night Watch&rdquo; and &ldquo;Day Watch&rdquo; (and the upcoming &ldquo;Twilight Watch&rdquo;), Bekmambetov has come to the states to show that not all Kazakhstanis arrive in the summer sun sporting hideously green one-piece thongs. Very nice! High five-a! Well, almost. Once Wesley arrives for training, he's informed by the head assassin (played with the usual omnipotent solemnity by Morgan Freeman) that his pop was part of a group steeped in tradition handed down from ancient weavers. That's right, Wesley is a fruit of the loom. As part of his training, the young lad gets worked over by various other co-workers/thugs with names like &ldquo;the Repairman&rdquo; and &ldquo;the Butcher,&rdquo; (no sight of &ldquo;the Candlestick-maker,&rdquo; though), until he's ready for his first assignment &ndash; killing the man who toe-tagged his father. And while there are some stunning sights of bullet bending, train-hopping and skull-piercing, Bekmambetov drops the pitch-black humor that elevated the first half and shifts the film into a dour-faced, dime-a-dozen climax that runs out of gas far before the carnage-heavy conclusion. (There are only so many different ways to film a bullet being deflected mid-air by another bullet, and the director tries them all, with diminishing results.) Like all summer action sagas, it's best not to let the brain stew too long on the whole &ldquo;moral&rdquo; of the story, as it is one that takes Wesley from zero to hero by his creativity in killing random people for no reason other than being told to do so by an ancient weaving machine (somehow, that dog barking orders to the Son of Sam does not seem so unorthodox). But for a short while, &ldquo;Wanted&rdquo; does engage in some contagious calamity that keeps us locked and loaded for the next round.<br/>
</div>]]></description><pubDate>Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:51:02 GMT</pubDate><spout:postby>usesoap</spout:postby><spout:postto>usesoap Blog</spout:postto><spout:postdate>6/29/2008 11:51:02 PM</spout:postdate><spout:body>This is the &amp;ldquo;Dilbert&amp;rdquo; panel I've always wanted to see. A fed-up office drone, sick of the confines of his cubicle, unleashes holy hell on his condescending superiors and clocks a duplicitous colleague in the jaw with his keyboard and heads out for adventure with Angelina Jolie. While &amp;ldquo;Wanted's&amp;rdquo; lead Wesley (played by James McAvoy) does just that, his character is taken from a different comic altogether. It's comic origins (based on one by Mark Millar and J. G. Jones) are felt throughout the film's reality-relinquishing first hour, until it turns on itself in the final act and decides to play things with a straight face. If only Cat-bert could have sauntered in to slap some sense into him. Let's start with the good. Wesley's life is torn straight from the pages of &amp;ldquo;Office Space:&amp;rdquo; a patronizing supervisor takes special glee in the daily ass-chewing she gives the young man, a co-worker enjoys showing Wesley's girlfriend his &amp;ldquo;O&amp;rdquo; face (if that line makes no sense to you, please go rent the aforementioned comedy); and his anxiety level is suppressed only with the help of a bottomless prescription jar of medication. On a particular day to refill said meds, Wesley's found himself in the middle of a pharmacy shootout, aided by a slinky Angelina Jolie. One fabulously outrageous car chase later (in which Wesley is literally scooped up into her shiny red sports car), the young man is told that he is the son of a recently deceased world-famous assassin and who has been selected to step into his shoes. It's a cinematic flip-of-the-bird to any and all potential &amp;ldquo;blockbusters&amp;rdquo; this summer and, for a while, it revs along at such a high rate of speed that it could mean business. There are many reasons for this. Primarily, lead McAvoy (a British actor known best stateside in the original &amp;ldquo;Chronicles of Narnia&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;Atonement,&amp;rdquo; but whose range is best demonstrated in a little 80s-centric indie called &amp;ldquo;Starter for Ten&amp;rdquo;) is such an engaging host to this frenetic freak-out. As someone who starts off with as a whiny Zack Braff clone, he is heartily believable in his transformation into a hitman resembling a young Russel Crowe. In a film that defies all laws of physics, gravity and logic, his performance in an undercurrent of stability. Jolie takes her second role this month as a tigress &amp;ndash; first, quite literally in &amp;ldquo;Kung Fu Panda,&amp;rdquo; and here as a felonious feline known only (and quite accurately) as Fox. Sure, it's a role she can do in her sleep, but, honestly, I have no problem watching anything Jolie does in her sleep. And, finally, step asideBorat. You are no longer the &amp;ldquo;it boy&amp;rdquo; of Kazakhstan. Those honors go to one Timur Bekmambetov, director of this otherworldly fever-dream of an action film. Lauded in his homeland for the candy-coated action vampire films &amp;ldquo;Night Watch&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;Day Watch&amp;rdquo; (and the upcoming &amp;ldquo;Twilight Watch&amp;rdquo;), Bekmambetov has come to the states to show that not all Kazakhstanis arrive in the summer sun sporting hideously green one-piece thongs. Very nice! High five-a! Well, almost. Once Wesley arrives for training, he's informed by the head assassin (played with the usual omnipotent solemnity by Morgan Freeman) that his pop was part of a group steeped in tradition handed down from ancient weavers. That's right, Wesley is a fruit of the loom. As part of his training, the young lad gets worked over by various other co-workers/thugs with names like &amp;ldquo;the Repairman&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;the Butcher,&amp;rdquo; (no sight of &amp;ldquo;the Candlestick-maker,&amp;rdquo; though), until he's ready for his first assignment &amp;ndash; killing the man who toe-tagged his father. And while there are some stunning sights of bullet bending, train-hopping and skull-piercing, Bekmambetov drops the pitch-black humor that elevated the first half and shifts the film into a dour-faced, dime-a-dozen climax that runs out of gas far before the carnage-heavy conclusion. (There are only so many different ways to film a bullet being deflected mid-air by another bullet, and the director tries them all, with diminishing results.) Like all summer action sagas, it's best not to let the brain stew too long on the whole &amp;ldquo;moral&amp;rdquo; of the story, as it is one that takes Wesley from zero to hero by his creativity in killing random people for no reason other than being told to do so by an ancient weaving machine (somehow, that dog barking orders to the Son of Sam does not seem so unorthodox). But for a short while, &amp;ldquo;Wanted&amp;rdquo; does engage in some contagious calamity that keeps us locked and loaded for the next round.</spout:body></item>

<strong>Body:</strong> The big question is why did Fox fund Idiocracy in the first place? It is a movie designed to be hated by them. It makes fun of the entire consumer culture that we are immersed in. It mocks all the companies that any movie studio usually tries to woo with product placement. The movie is uneven, but is greatly successful because it is willing to bite the corporate hand that feeds it. It has the same sense of humor that makes Office Space (1999) so successful. It mocks the fact that people are unwilling to speak out against social conventions. This movie is great satire because it is willing to poke us with the sharp end of the funny stick. At some point we re all the Get Out of the Way guy.<br/>
