Title: Ravenous
Year: 1999
Director: Antonia Bird
Plot: In 1847, many Americans made the journey across our continent in search of gold. Many failed to complete the journey or see their dreams come to light. Capt. John Boyd (Guy Pearce) found his way here thanks to an act of cowardice during the Mexican-American War; he has been banished to a desolate military outpost in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Upon his arrival, he is greeted by a rag-tag group of soldiers manning the fort: Hart (Jeffrey Jones), the despondent commanding officer; Toffler (Jeremy Davies), the company chaplain; Knox (Stephen Spinella), the drunken doctor; Reich (Neal McDonough), the only real soldier of the group; and Cleaves (David Arquette), the heavily medicated camp cook. One day, Colqhoun (Robert Carlyle) stumbles into their camp. The half-starved Scotsman had been traveling with a group of settlers until they were snowbound. Unable to move forward, they took refuge in a cave, where once they ran out of food, they were forced to resort to cannibalism. Colqhoun barely escaped the madness -- or did he? Boyd and the soldiers hear of the old Indian legend of the Wendigo, which states a man who tastes the flesh of another steals that man's strength, spirit and essence. His hunger, however, will become an unstoppable craving. Like a vampire, the more he eats, the more he wants, and the stronger he will become, with death the only escape from the madness. The soldiers are soon drawn into the frenzy and Boyd is soon left with the choice of eating or being eaten. ~ Ron Wells, All Movie Guide
Body: Well Doctor, I'm fairly sure I haven't seen even 10% of the horror movies you have, but I will make a list anyhow.I know we have had many discussion in the past about what constitutes a horror movie. But for purposes of this list, I will try to limit myself to more strictly defined horror. In other words, I will only include movies that I think there would be a decent chance that you could find them in the "horror" section of your video rental store. It's still hard to differentiate though because some movies might be more thriller than horror, or more sci-fi than horror, or more action than horror, or more comedy than horror.1. The Shining2. Ravenous3. Cube4. The Thing (1982)5. Night of the Living Dead 6. Psycho7. Alien8. American Psycho9. The Blair Witch Project10. Sleepy Hollow11. Jaws12. Body: Yes, boys and ghouls, it's that magical time of the year again, when ghosts and goblins and monsters and madmen roam the earth in search of 'sweets'! That's right! It's Thanksgiving! ... Oops! My bad! I had my calender on the wrong page! To make a long story short, I just purchased a 'restored/remastered' DVD of Halloween and I watched this movie again for about the 30th time and IT JUST DOESN'T GET OLD! There is a story behind this one, but basically, there are actually some movies that I don't mind seeing over and over again! What a phenomena ! Anyhow, AOL has compiled (yet another) list of the all time best Horror Movies! You can check it out here... Best Horror Movies of All Time: 31 Days of Horror - Moviefone. If I were to have to pick my Top Ten all-time favorite Horror Movies, I think that list would change... day to day... depending a lot upon my mood... At THIS moment in my life, my top-ten list would look something like this... 1. The Exorcist ; STILL THE SCARIEST MOVIE EVER MADE!!! 2. Night Of The Living Dead ; A masterpiece! Who could NOT resist the charms of THIS classic! 3. Dawn Of The Dead 4. Zombie 5. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 6. Psycho 7. Day Of The Dead 8. Return Of The Living Dead 9. Friday The 13th: part II 10. A Nightmare On Elm Street ... ... Freddy fucking rules! Anyhow, those are my thoughts. What are yours?
Body: This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”. To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entry.Evil Dead IIProbably one of the greatest if you are a total slasher/horror/horror/comedy nut. I actually preferred the original The Evil Dead. It seemed more pure to me I guess. And I've heard all the debates about whether this was supposed to be a remake in a way, and why, and that original rights were lost. Whatever. It's a fun movie no doubt, but just not my favorite genre. For horror comedy my favorite is still Ravenous. Even though it's apparently not even listed as a comedy on IMDB.I feel like there's not much else to say here. Maybe there's not that much to talk about, and I've already discussed it enough elsewhere around Spout.Rating: 7/10
Body:
Previous to making this list via algorithm, did you ever make a list of favorite directors, in order, just out of your head? I'd be interested to know how your calculated list compares with your subjective list. Or to put it another way, did you look at the list you had created and say, Wait a minute, I like director #10 more than director #5?What's the highest female director on the list?
Yeah if I had made a list just off the top of my head it would be different no doubt. Some filmmakers I may have named were just weighed down because I hadn't seen a high enough percentage of their movies. For instance, Vittorio De Sica, Seijun Suzuki, Ingmar Bergman, Robert Bresson, Samuel Fuller, and probably the Zucker Abrahams Zucker team that made great stuff together and apart and was hard to get an accurrate rating for unlike the Coen brother who are a team but ALWAYS work together. Some filmmakers that I wouldn't maybe have put so high would be like PT Anderson or Alejandro González Iñárritu. And that's really just because I've seen most of their movies and they were good, but I dunno if I just want to list them that high.... And like Tarantino is a lot of fun, but there seems something about listing him too high that I just don't like. Eh. Hard to say why.As for female directors, I don't have too many with data entered in yet. I've got Sophia Coppola but I liked Lost in Translation much more than Virgin Suicides. Antonia Bird directed Ravenous which I gave a 9, but that's the only movie I've seen of hers. I am for some reason wary of seeing any more of her films because none of them sound like they would appeal to me. They all seem very different from this comedy/horror. The other two were co-directors. Kátia Lund had a hand in the documentary News from a Personal War and the accompanying movie City of God. Ágnes Hranitzky is listed as co-director on Werckmeister Harmonies, but who knows how much she actually influenced it. I don't even know if that person is a female, but just assumed because Agnes is usually a woman's name.
I don't even know if that person is a female, but just assumed because Agnes is usually a woman's name.</spout:body>

Body: i was starting to post "You left out Antonia Bird" but then I checked back and saw you hadn't! However, I haven't seen your nominee Ravenous (and am unlikely to, for genre reasons, sorry). But I would offer both Bird's Priest and especially Face as really top notch. Dana
Body: This film firmly belongs in that special category of movie for me that can only be called 'Those weird "can't believe they (insert big name actor here that you have profound respect for) were in that, hey it's sunday night, got nothin' to do, lets watch the train wreck again.' To this day I have no idea why Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle (well, ok, I CAN understand Robert Carlyle being in this having just watched him feast on his own wife in 28 Weeks later, but hadn't Guy Pearce kind of moved onto more serious fare post LA Confidential?) are in this film, its kind of ridiculous, But I find this film weirdly mesmerising and every time its on, there I am, eyes glued to screen. Maybe its the haunting Sierra Nevada snowscapes, the way Robert Carlylse embraces his supernatural cannabiism with 'relish', or the fact that Guy Pearce plays it so damn straight despite the ludicrous premise. Maybe I watch it just to hear Robert Carlyle utter the classic line "we shall not feast...indiscriminately. We shall feast......selectively. After all we don't want to break up whole families." How considerate.
