Title: Fallen
Year: 1997
Director: Gregory Hoblit
Plot: Directed by Gregory Hoblit (Primal Fear), Fallen is a blend of the police drama and supernatural thriller genres. Homicide detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) narrates, taking the audience back to "the time I almost died." This sets a flashback in motion, beginning at the prison cell of serial killer Edgar Reese (Elias Koteas), who grabs Hobbes' hand and sings The Rolling Stones' "Time Is on My Side." After Reese is executed, Hobbes and his partner, Jonesy (John Goodman), find a seeming copycat killer, committing murders in a manner not unlike Reese. Hobbes is drawn into the occult after he meets theology professor Gretta Milano (Embeth Davidtz), the daughter of a dead police officer. Hobbes becomes a suspect himself, but he continues his search for the truth. Co-producer Dawn Steel died just as this film was due for release. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide
Body: "John" (Denzel Washington) is a veteran police detective who is after the most powerful, and most dangerous criminal he could ever imagine -- a "demon" who can transfer itself from one person to another by a simple touch. The "demon" has targeted "John" after the latest body it inhabited was killed in a gas chamber for multiple murders. And "John" was the one who brought him, and the "demon" that inhabits him, in. The "demon" taunts "John" by possessing the bodies of people who "John" either happens to come across or is in his personal life. It also taunts him with riddles it leaves behind at murder scenes. And the only way "John" can identify the demon is by a song from the 1960's it makes those it inhabits hum, whistle or sing. One of the most unique effects in this entire movie is that we get to see through the eyes of the "demon" and those it inhabits. The scenes are interesting because they are distorted by leaning to the left, and the picture is not crystal clear. What else is interesting is that every actor who the demon is suppose to inhabit play the "demon" pretty much the exact same way. None put their own twist on it except when the song was being sung. One thing that this movie lacks is a good scare. To me, that's the only real problem with this movie. Yeah, a few times something or someone pops up to make you jump. However, this movie lacks a good scream. Out of the entire main cast, Washington has the strongest performance. The rest of the cast isn't really given much to play with. There is some action, especially when "John" is near the demon, but there really isn't a lot. I personally would have liked to have seen more action and better scares that had just enough time between each to give you a little breather before the next thing happens. The soundtrack isn't really memorable, although there are some songs you will recognize since they were popular at the time. And the song that the "demon" is known for is on screen just enough so that you won't be going away singing the song to yourself. If you are looking for a real good scare, this movie is not for you. It is still a pretty good mystery.
Body: Here is my list, although it is a bit different in that the list allows only one Film from each of the 31 years, which believe me, limits the choices; for instance 1986: The FlyFrom BeyondHenry: Portrait of a Serial KillerThe HitcherInvaders from MarsManhunterNomadsVamp1987 is just as hardI am working on another one, which is just my 31 favorites regardless of how many a year. These choices listed, fit my definition of horror. They are horrifying and extremely unsettling, but may not be, in the strictest sense, horror. but well, here it is. Oh, I also did not not include the Alien films which although 'monster goes boo!', even though I love every one of them, fall somewhere in the realm of Science Fiction to me...enough gibberish, here it is:By the way, I want 'Mommie Dearest' to be No. 1, but that is another story.Years 1976 through 2007 ( the Spout year listings are a bit different than Wikipedia's which I used ) 31. 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street 30. 1994 Natural Born Killers 29. 2004 Dawn of the Dead 28. 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre 27. 2005 Sin City 26. 1993 Army of Darkness 25. 1998 Fallen 24. 1983 Videodrome 23. 2006 Fido 22. 1996 The Frighteners 21. 2007 Zodiac 20. 2000 Crimson Rivers 19. 2001 Frailty 18. 2002 28 Days Later 17. 1990 Jacob’s Ladder 16. 1988 The Vanishing 15. 1995 Se7en 14. 1989 Shocker 13. 1976 The Tenant 12. 1977 Rabid 11. 1987 Hellraiser 10. 1985 Re-Animator 9. 1981 The Howling 8. 1979 Nosferatu 7. 1978 Halloween 6. 1986 The Hitcher 5. 1991 The Silence of the Lambs 4. 1982 The Thing 3. 1992 Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me 2. 1997 Lost Highway 1. 1999 Audition
