Title: Starship Troopers
Year: 1997
Director: Paul Verhoeven
Plot: Director Paul Verhoeven (Showgirls, Total Recall) reunited many from his 1987 Robocop team for this $100-million science fiction adventure, adapted from Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel, originally serialized in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction (October-November, 1959). After graduation, Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) volunteers for the Mobile Infantry to do his Federal service -- but also to win over his girlfriend, Carmen Ibanez (Denise Richards), who has signed with the Fleet Academy to become a starship pilot. Johnny joins other boot-camp recruits -- Dizzy Flores (Dina Meyer), who has had a crush on Johnny since school, and Ace Levy (Jake Busey). Ace and Johnny become pals, and Johnny's abilities earn him the squad leader position. A training accident occurs on Johnny's watch, and he is about to resign when Earth is attacked by alien insects intent on eradicating all human life. Johnny's home, Buenos Aires, is no longer on the map. Horrified, he chooses to stay on and fight to destroy the insect threat. The Mobile Infantry travels to the planet Klendathu to battle the warrior bugs, a ruthless enemy with only one goal -- survival of their species no matter what. In the initial encounter, some 100,000 lives are lost. At a distant fort, Johnny's unit discovers that the bugs drain brains to acquire knowledge. Soon they are overwhelmed by an advancing arthropod army of immense proportions, attacking both in space and on the planet surface. The notion of human extinction becomes a possibility. For this $100-million production, some 300 artists and technicians combined models and miniatures with CGI effects to fashion a variety of creatures -- from breeder bugs to armored tanker bugs. The film employed hundreds of extras and has over 500 visual effects shots. Filming began 4/29/96 in California (LA and Long Beach, where Cal State's pyramid gym was used for the Jumpball game), New York, South Dakota, Wyoming (Casper, Hell's Half Acre), and Utah (an abandoned Wendover airstrip where the Enola Gay WWII bomber crew trained). At an abandoned airfield in Fountain Valley, California, an elaborate set was constructed to resemble a military boot camp of the future -- complete with an array of pup tents, gull-winged spaceships, hurdle obstacle course, and training facility buildings. Cinematography by Jost Vacano (Showgirls). Licensed products include Lewis Galoob Inc. toys. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide
Body: The Night of the Hunter - Not really about an execution, but the film centers around some money that the cellmate of a death row inmate overhears and takes upon himself to find upon his release. Sin City - The film that brought back Mickey Rourke from mediocrity. Not to give anything away but his character Marv was one fucking badass that just wouldn't die peacefully. Capote & Infamous - Both good films about the murders that took place in Truman Capote's In Cold Blood and the subsequent executions of the murderers. Elizabeth - The first act of the film centers on whether Elizabeth is going to be executed or become queen. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer - I believe the latter part of the film centered around an execution but all I remember is the bizarre orgy. Need to watch it again. Marie Antoinette - The one thing that got a lot of people mad about this film was the lack of any depiction of her execution. The Messenger - Again, doesn't get to the actual act, but nonetheless. Alice in Wonderland - OFF WITH HER HEAD! Salo - Kinda sorta fits the theme. A bunch of young girls and boys are kidnapped from the countryside and ritualistically tortured and executed. Worth checking out if you feel like vomiting. Dancer in the Dark - I love von Trier and Bjork but not so much together in this film. Definitely on my re-watch list. Starship Troopers - There is a particularly hilarious scene in the film where a murderers execution is going to be aired on live television.
Body: "Arachnids" and humans are at war, and "Johnny Rico" (Casper Vab Dein) has decided to join the military to fight the "bugs." Even though his parents, especially his father (Christopher Curry), object it and order him to go on vacation. He refuses, and joins the military. He joins his beautiful girlfriend (Denise Richards), in military training. However, after taking an exam, he is assigned to Mobile Infantry, while she is assigned to Flight School. He is also joined by his best friend (Neil Patrick Harris, and his female football team mate, "Dizzy" (Dina Meyers), who tries to make him forget "Carmen" (Richards). Now, after not being the best soldier-in-training and making a huge mistake resulting in the death of a fellow soldier, "Rico" decides to stick with the service as things begins to heat up in the war. This movie reminds me a little of the "RoboCop" films with the fiction television broadcasts and TV commercials in the start of the movie. It then goes to straight out action movie. One thing you will notice immediately is the special effects. They are perfect if you ask me. The starships look very realistic, and the "Arachnids" are amazing. The "Bugs", as they are nicknamed for obvious reasons, look incredibly realistic. Their skin and movements really make them look like the real thing. And they are perfectly blended into the scenes. In fact, the special effects still hold up about 11 years later. I thought the cast was really good. Even when the lines were a little poor. Many had really good chemistry together, especially the main performers. But, I think Harris was trying too hard to act "military" when he rejoins the story near the end. Another thing you can't help but notice is the costumes. I can see many of the outfits in the battlefield. However, Richards looked horrible in what I think was a dress uniform she wore in one scene. The jacket looked too big on her, which was by design in the shoulders. Even the hat looked horrible on her. There is a lot of action in this movie. Lots of explosions and gun play. However, despite the "Bugs" being explained in the movie as intelligent creatures, I just did not see any intelligence in their attacks, if any. To me, the "Arachnids" appeared to be defending their homeworld from invaders that had no reason for their attack. I don't think that the movie did a clear explanation as to why the "Arachnids" are attacking the humans. It felt to me that the audience was left to assume the reason for their attack. I also found some weak character development in this movie. We get people who are introduced to the audience, but their relationships with main characters are not really explored. We do get how they are connected with the main players, but we get no depth into their relationships. One thing that parents of young children should be aware of is that this movie is pretty violent. If your child is of an age that can not understand that the "Arachnids" are not real, then you probably might not want to have them see this movie. Also, some of the things seen are pretty graphic, and should not be viewed by really young children due to how graphic some things are. For some reason, the majority of the blood comes from the "Arachnids." You will see some major injuries, but the amount of blood that pours out is not as much as you would expect -- especially when an artery is sliced. This movie is not for people who don't like gore, even though this is pretty mild. I also would not allow younger kids to watch this one. Despite the minor problems, I would put this in your top three selections to rent if your first one is unavailable. Or check it on On Demand like I did.
Body: Outrageous, entertaining, sexy. How does Paul Verhoeven get these performances? Particularly Dina Meyer as Dizzy who bought in 100%. Good for her. And what an arresting smile from Denise Richards. Anyway, I am impressed in a dumbed down sort of way - *** 1/2 / ***** Far, far, far superior to anything I have seen from the Dutchman, until?......
Body: Paul Verhoeven - 2006On the heels of Starship Troopers I ventured through this and it took me three nights to do so because of various distractions. My feelings are that this is certainly his premier film, his 6th feature after RoboCop (filmed in my home town of Dallas). It is interesting to see (and perhaps poll?) directors' finest efforts six to seven films in. Watch the "making of." Verhoeven has an irresistable love of the medium and the energy of a first time director. The female leads in the film are outstanding. Carice van Houten and Halina Reign brilliantly capture the desperate attempt to stay alive using sexuality and male manipulation. In this sense, Verhoeven gives Camille Paglia a run for her money and solidifies himself as a Dutch feminist. The production value of the second act is weak and is the only hint at the relatively small budget that Verhoeven had on the picture – it does play like a weak Sunday night television thriller. This stands among the best of Holocaust films. It is on par with http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077025/ and better than Schindler’s List. Its a thiller that stands above all Verhoeven’s previous work. I think it’s the film that he was meant to make. Again, watch the "making of." His lead stars agree with me.**** / *****

Body: So many to list . . . so how about I go with the most shocking (to me). Julianne Moore / Heather Graham / Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights Kevin Bacon in Wild Things Never have I wanted to rip out my eyes so badly before. Denise Richards in Wild Things Makes up for Kevin Bacon. Kate WInslet in Titanic Jennifer Connelly in Requiem for a Dream Holly Hunter in Crash Mena Suvari in American Beauty Michael Pitt in The Dreamers Kate Hudson in Almost Famous Get your pause buttons ready. Dina Meyer in Starship Troopers Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love Monica Bellucci in Irreversible Laura Harring in Mulholland Dr. Out of the middle of nowhere, BAM! Lesbian Sex Scene! Elizabeth Berkley / Gina Gershon in Showgirls From Saved By The Bell to this. Nice transition. Jaime King in Sin City Vinessa Shaw in Eyes Wide Shut Wait? She was wearing a mask? I didn't notice. Milla Jovovich in The Fifth Element Selma Blair in Storytelling Some people only saw a big black censored square over her. Find the unrated version of the film. Selma Blair in A Dirty Shame So they are obviously fake, but holy &#$%! Uma Thurman in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen So she's almost completely naked. Who cares! Sheryl Lee in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me They couldn't do that on television! Rose McGowan in The Doom Generation Erika Eleniak in Under Siege Happy Birthday to me! Erika Eleniak in Chasers Amy Adams in Psycho Beach Party Before she was an Academy Award Nominee. Natalie Portman in Hotel Chevalier Heather Matarazzo in Hostel 2 Christina Ricci in The Opposite of Sex Christina Ricci in Black Snake Moan WOW! Isabella Rossellini in Blue Velvet Ewan McGregor in Velvet Goldmine Emmanuelle Seigner in The Ninth Gate Straddling Johnny Depp next to a burning castle. Hot! Demi Moore in Striptease I think that's enough for now. And yes, I am a pervert.
And yes, I am a pervert.</spout:body>

Body:
And Denise Richards in Starship Troopers was kind of awesome...
That's my favorite. When the movie got dumber than intentionally dumb, she was a great addition to the scenery. And I agree that Milla Jovovich was siiick in The Fifth Element. That was such a good movie, no matter how slimy you feel after watching it. Jill, Lowry's dream girl in Brazil, is pretty badass too. Her contempt for him is hilarious, as is her blatant disregard for the "system"--besides Tuttle, she's probably the toughest in the movie.
Body:
I don't know their names but there are a couple of pretty hot tough-chicks (one is an android, I think) in Jason X . And, yeah, I do think that is sci-fi as well as horror. And Denise Richards in Starship Troopers was kind of awesome...
I've gotta go old school here. Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. She's handy with a blaster, always ready to take charge of any rescue operation and looks good in a golden bikini even when choking the life out of a giant slug.
