Title: Cube
Year: 1998
Director: Vincenzo Natali
Plot: This low-budget science-fiction drama, winner of a 1997 Toronto Film Festival prize for "Best Canadian First Feature," depicts the plight of a group of people clad in prison-style uniforms and trapped in futuristic cube-like metal cells. Their memories are hazy; no one can recall how they got there. Alderson (Julian Richings) awakens in a cell, seeks an exit, and arrives in an adjacent cube where he's sliced and diced. Former cop Quentin (Maurice Dean-Wint) becomes the group leader, and he's challenged by conspiracy theorist Dr. Holloway (Nicky Guadagni). Government worker Worth (David Hewlett) remembers a past government link to the project. A discovery that the cubes have numerical codes suggests study by math-student Leaven (Nicole deBoer) while former thief Rennes (Wayne Robson) knows some escape tricks. However, the extreme behavior of Kazan (Andrew Miller) becomes a threat to their survival. The film was also shown at the 1997 Vancouver Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide
Body: When I think about kidnapping films the first thing that comes to mind is "It puts the lotion in the basket." The Silence of the Lambs has that rare ability to give me chills each time I watch it and I love it for that. I think a lot of people also became weary of helping others after Buffalo Bill feigned an injury in order to kidnap his prey in the film. The thought of being trapped in a well and starved so someone could skin me definitely gives me the willies. I just recently got to see my first Buster Keaton film, The General, which revolves around a kidnapping. It's probably one of a handful of films in which the audience is rooting for a Southerner to win out over the North during the Civil War. Another older film that involves kidnapping is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It's a disturbingly creepy but incredibly enjoyable musical about a group of mountain men that decide to kidnap the local towns young girls in order to get all the "perks" of marriage. I'm really only a fan of the first one, but all of the Saw films centered around kidnappings. Similarly, all of the Cube films revolve around a group of kidnapped victims trying to figure out why they were abducted. And lastly, The Princess Bride. Undoubtedly doesn't need any explanation. The combination of Wallace Shawn, Andre the Giant and Mandy Patinkin as the kidnappers is just perfection.
Body: My name is Brian. Some people call me Rizzo. I'm originally from the Grand Rapids area, but have been living in Chicago for over four years now (holy cow, has it been that long?! I guess it has). I have too many favorite sci-fi movies to almost name here. I might just have to go with 2001: A Space Odyssey as the classice straight up sci-fi movie. Although Gattaca and Cube are also some of my favorite favorite movies that are pretty straight up sci-fi too. And as for what I eat while watching movies? Mostly cheese. Lots and lots of cheese. Brie or Wisconsin cheese curds being some of my favorite options.
Body: Well, one of my favorites has to be Dogville and the relentless imprisonment that Nicole Kidman's character must endure. However, not too many people tend to like that film. The Matrix et al is pretty much about the human race trying to escape being imprisoned. Similarly, Cube is all about a random group of people trying to escape a monstrous Rubik's Cube full of booby traps. The Silence of the Lambs is fantastic in the way it gets you to almost root for the cannibalistic imprisoned serial killer to escape his plate glass jail cell. And within the past few years there have been all of the Saw movies which everyone knows about. Some from my youth that scared the crap out of me are Flowers in the Attic, The People Under the Stairs, Carrie and The Goonies. All films about sick and twisted parental figures locking their children in various small, dank rooms of their house. An American Crime, with poor little Juno getting brutalized in a basement by all the neighborhood children and caretaker, could also go into this category. Lastly there are all those flicks about escapes one's self. Fight Club with Edward Norton's character trying to escape the entrapments of his own alter ego. Max in Pi ultimately resorting to extreme measures to release himself from his mind. And all the craziness of people entering into other peoples minds and getting trapped in Being John Malkovich.
Body: Top 5 Antagonists: Human1.) Dazed and Confused - O'Bannon - Ben Affleck's character takes the cake as the biggest a**hole and eventually gets what he deserves.2.) Mutiny on the Bounty - Captain Bligh - Sadistic and unflinchingly evil, Captain Bligh is undoubtedly one of cinemas most hated antagonists.3.) What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? - Jane - Bette Davis oozes nastiness from her caked on makeup to her hoarse, smokers voice.4.) Se7en - John Doe - The unseen serial killer in this film intensifies the terror and dread the viewer feels throughout this film, even more so when he reveals himself and his final acts of brutality.5.) Groundhog Day - Phil "like the groundhog!" Connors - Bill Murray is incredibly noxious for most of the film as a jaded weather man forced to relive the same day over and over again.Runner's Up: Strangeland, Misery, All About Eve, Man Bites Dog, Lemony Snicket's, Dogville Top 5 Antagonists: Supernatural / Science Fiction1.) The Wizard of Oz - The Wicked Witch of the West - Damn if that green-skinned witch isn't the meanest *itch in all of Oz and cinema.2.) Star Wars Trilogy - Darth Vader - Masked and menacing, Darth Vader is felt through each film even when he's not on screen.3.) Jaws - The Great White Shark - Only supernatural in it's damned ability to know what's going on in every inch of the ocean, the shark is one evil son of a *itch.4.) Halloween - Michael Myers - Again, masked and scary as hell, Michael Myers is the definition of a nightmare come to life.5.) Alien - The Alien - In my opinion, one of the creepiest monsters ever imagined.Runner's Up: A Nightmare on Elm Street, Poltergeist, Friday the 13th, Mommie Dearest (Joan Crawford must have had supernatural powers to be that wicked). Top 5 Antagonists: Inanimate Objects1.) The Money Pit - The House - Definitely one of the most aggravating movies where the main antagonist really does nothing but sits there (and continues to fall apart).2.) Speed - The Bus - You try to keep your cool while maintaining the speed limit in L.A. traffic!3.) Cube - The Cube - Murderous booby-traps aplenty, room after room after room after room after room after room after room etc.4.) Maximum Overdrive - The Machines - When those damned semis went crazy, they really went crazy.5.) Modern Times - The Machines - Again, those damned machines getting a mind of their own.
Body: Well Doctor, I'm fairly sure I haven't seen even 10% of the horror movies you have, but I will make a list anyhow.I know we have had many discussion in the past about what constitutes a horror movie. But for purposes of this list, I will try to limit myself to more strictly defined horror. In other words, I will only include movies that I think there would be a decent chance that you could find them in the "horror" section of your video rental store. It's still hard to differentiate though because some movies might be more thriller than horror, or more sci-fi than horror, or more action than horror, or more comedy than horror.1. The Shining2. Ravenous3. Cube4. The Thing (1982)5. Night of the Living Dead 6. Psycho7. Alien8. American Psycho9. The Blair Witch Project10. Sleepy Hollow11. Jaws12. To make a long story short, I just purchased a 'restored/remastered' DVD of Halloween and I watched this movie again for about the 30th time and IT JUST DOESN'T GET OLD! There is a story behind this one, but basically, there are actually some movies that I don't mind seeing over and over again! What a phenomena ! Anyhow, AOL has compiled (yet another) list of the all time best Horror Movies! You can check it out here... Best Horror Movies of All Time: 31 Days of Horror - Moviefone. If I were to have to pick my Top Ten all-time favorite Horror Movies, I think that list would change... day to day... depending a lot upon my mood... At THIS moment in my life, my top-ten list would look something like this... 1. The Exorcist ; STILL THE SCARIEST MOVIE EVER MADE!!! 2. Night Of The Living Dead ; A masterpiece! Who could NOT resist the charms of THIS classic! 3. Dawn Of The Dead 4. Zombie 5. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 6. Psycho 7. Day Of The Dead 8. Return Of The Living Dead 9. Friday The 13th: part II 10. A Nightmare On Elm Street ... ... Freddy fucking rules! Anyhow, those are my thoughts. What are yours?
Body: A great movie. It is better than the second movie. It was very creepy in spots. I am a fan of this form of storytelling that allows the viewer to try and solve the puzzle alongside the movie and with the characters.
Body: I've always been a fan of the Saw way of storytelling. Allowing the audience to put together a puzzle as the plot develops, trusting the audience to be intelligent and interactive, this makes for a great way of viewing a movie. Cube was a great example of this storytelling. The characters were slowly revealed with their backgrounds and why they were brought together in this situation. It's life or death, but the escape is out of reach for most.
