Title: Event Horizon
Year: 1997
Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Plot: In this sci-fi/horror scarefest, Dr. William Weir (Sam Neill) is a scientist who has designed a spacecraft called Event Horizon which will explore the outer reaches of space past the planet Neptune; the ship employs a special transport mechanism that, in effect, creates a black hole that the ship can pass through, allowing it to travel tremendous distances in a few seconds. The Event Horizon mysteriously disappears in the midst of a mission with no trace of either the ship or its crew, but it reappears in Neptune's orbit after a seven year absence and it's sending out a distress signal. The spaceship Lewis and Clark, and Dr. Weir, are sent to investigate; the crew -- Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne), pilot Smith (Sean Pertwee), engineer Justin (Jack Noseworthy), navigator Starck (Joely Richardson), physician D.J. (Jason Isaacs), and emergency technicians Peters (Kathleen Quinlan) and Cooper (Richard T. Jones) -- are already tired and unenthusiastic about this assignment, and somewhat confused by Weir's reports. The crew of the Lewis and Clark are convinced that Weir is not telling them something, and when they discover the Event Horizon, they find that things are not what they seem, and an evil presence has taken over the ship. Incidentally, the term "event horizon" describes the outer boundaries of a black hole. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: Please reference this thread for the rules of this group. Again it's kind of an arbitrary comparison I know, but I still thought it was interesting how many Andersons there were as famous directors. I know Roy Andersson has an extra "s" in it, but as far as I know it's pronounced the same. Please vote only once in each poll. Some of the movies from these directors: Lindsay Anderson - This Sporting Life, If...., O Lucky Man! Paul Thomas Anderson - Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood Paul W.S. Anderson - Event Horizon, Resident Evil, AVP: Alien vs. Predator Wes Anderson - Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Roy Andersson - A Swedish Love Story, Songs from the Second Floor, You, the Living
Body: Cross-Posted from Giraffe Versus Unicorn. Danny Boyle's Sunshine is a gorgeous psychological thriller set in the confines of the Icarus II space station, as it makes it's way towards the sun to deliver a bomb that will reignite the dieing star. The eight-strong crew of the Icarus II are instructed to carry out their goal as follows: the ship will fly within reach of the sun and fire it's payload of nuclear material, 'equal in mass to Manhattan Island', into it's very heart, while propelling themselves away within a four minute deadline. Only, they're met with a myriad of problems along the way. When they receive a distress beacon from the crew of the Icarus I, the first attempt at such a huge mission, the decision to chance docking with the other ship or continuing with the task at hand is left to Cillian Murphy's Capa, the ship's physics expert and the only person capable of delivering the payload.Events take a turn for the worse and the movie broadens it's outlook as it enters it's final act, as it throws in a physical presence (without giving too much away) to add to the overload of tension. The film falters here, at the final hurdle, with a tacked on addition that just doesn't feel needed.Sunshine gives sometimes unsubtle nods to previous science fiction movies, evoking the paranoia and claustrophobia of Alien and borrowing slithers of ideas from 2001: A Space Odyssey. It also plays, at one point, on the harsh cuts and scrapes of shots from Event Horizon, as the crew board the previous Icarus ship. Pictures and memories of the ship's former crew are interspersed between shots, building a sinister atmosphere.Stunning visuals throughout the film match a well-crafted story which dabbles in and touches on isolation, depravation and selflessness, and on a bigger scale, religion, global warming and man's intent to take one final shot and risk burning out rather than fading away.4
Body: I came up with this idea after reading Rjsprague's post in the Sci fi group about Movies that take place in the future: "I WANT A HOVERBOARD!!!!!!!!!! PLEEEEEAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEE!!! That's how I used to be, before I got one of those sweet guns from The Fifth Element that has bullets that track a target. One of my former, stupid, roommates hit the red button on it while I was out at the movies. That was a real mess. Luckily I met this cool guy named HAL. He lives inside of a computer, I think, but we get along pretty well out here in the cold depths of outer space. That is, until this ghost chick kept stalking me as I approached the edge of a black hole. Needless to say, I made like Ripley and gtfo, if you know I mean. Then I hooked up with weird guys who kept talking about some guy named Schwartz or something. Anyway they were cool dudes so I didn't mind chillin'. Funny story, huh?"
Body:
As to why there are more scary/creepy Sci-Fi movie than funny ones... Well I'd say, because it is easier to do scary even if it isn't good. If you do a bad comedy, people will stay away in droves. Plus you have to be able to balence the rules of comedy with the internal science fiction rules. Now you have two hard things to achieve in one package. It can be done, but I think a lot of studios feel it isn't worth all the work.
Very interesting theory! I think I agree with you that comedy is harder to do than scary. At least, I get more engaged in mediocre horror/sci-fi than in mediocre comedy. With decent effects, some cliche disturbing ideas or images, and some startling BOO! scenes, you've got a 'scary' movie. Like Event Horizon. I think the genuinely creepiest part is where they're listening to the broadcast of Latin or whatever it is. The rest seems pretty by-the-numbers to me. This reminds me of something I read about Philip K. Dick in The New Yorker the other day. The writer of the article (sorry, forgot their name) said genre writers are never simply good writers; they are always either a genius or a hack. It seems like mediocre dark sci-fi gets more cult followers than mediocre funny sci-fi. Do you agree? Is comedy just not conducive to getting a cult following, and that's why studios usually opt for dark stuff?
Body: Yes, boys and ghouls, it's that magical time of the year again, when ghosts and goblins and monsters and madmen roam the earth in search of 'sweets'! That's right! It's Thanksgiving! ... Oops! My bad! I had my calender on the wrong page! To make a long story short, I just purchased a 'restored/remastered' DVD of Halloween and I watched this movie again for about the 30th time and IT JUST DOESN'T GET OLD! There is a story behind this one, but basically, there are actually some movies that I don't mind seeing over and over again! What a phenomena ! Anyhow, AOL has compiled (yet another) list of the all time best Horror Movies! You can check it out here... Best Horror Movies of All Time: 31 Days of Horror - Moviefone. If I were to have to pick my Top Ten all-time favorite Horror Movies, I think that list would change... day to day... depending a lot upon my mood... At THIS moment in my life, my top-ten list would look something like this... 1. The Exorcist ; STILL THE SCARIEST MOVIE EVER MADE!!! 2. Night Of The Living Dead ; A masterpiece! Who could NOT resist the charms of THIS classic! 3. Dawn Of The Dead 4. Zombie 5. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 6. Psycho 7. Day Of The Dead 8. Return Of The Living Dead 9. Friday The 13th: part II 10. A Nightmare On Elm Street ... ... Freddy fucking rules! Anyhow, those are my thoughts. What are yours?
What are yours?</spout:body>

Body: I am a big Danny Boyle fan. Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and Millions are among my favorite movies so it was with great anticipation that I went to see Sunshine. I hadn't read any reviews (purposely) so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. The trailer makes it seem as if it is a sci-fi horror/thriller type of thing but the first half of the movie is a much more sedate 2001 experience. It is beautifully shot and set up and there is a slow tension that builds as the crew of the ship heads toward its destination. There is a shift in tone though and the movie becomes much more conventional (in story) and far more active (in direction). There are many similarities to Event Horizon in the final act but they are done to better effect in that movie. I enjoyed it despite its flaws. the acting is good and in some parts great. Cillian Murphy, as always, shines and Chris Evans, Michele Yeoh and Rose Byrne are solid. I am ever impressed with directors who can cross genres convincingly and Boyle proves that he can most definitely handle a large special effects laden project. The weaknesses are due to the Alex Garland script (which surprised me) though they are far from fatal.
Body: Okay first off- spout "experts" are VERY wrong about this movie..This movie is brilliant not to mention completely original. It reels you in and doesn't stop. It's a great movie with great actors it doesn't get much better. Event Horizon really does master the pyschological aspect. If you're lookin for a good horror movie check this out. This movie ventures out into areas a lot of films don't mess with but it does it in a way to where you can still understand it and not get thrown back. give it a shot-you might like it
Body: One of the scariest horror movies I've ever seen is Event Horizon. It's not slasher scary, but it throws a dangerous psychological aspect into the mix. I saw this one alone in a theater and thought my car was going to take over my mind the entire drive home. It's one of those love or hate it type movies, but if it clicks, it's scary as hell.
