Plot: Steve Martin stars in this remake of the 1950 Vincente Minnelli classic as shoe executive George Banks, whose happily married existence hits a bump when he greets his daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams), home from a semester studying in Europe. She tells her father that she is engaged to be married. When the shocked George asks to whom, she says his name is Bryan (George Newbern) and that he is an "independent communications consultant." George is even more shocked when he finds out what the wedding will cost (when George goes through the card file for invited wedding guests and is told someone is deceased, George chirps, "He died? That's great!"). Body: I would like to nominate Steve Martin as the official face of the remake. And as a bonus honor, I would also like to nominate him as the representative of sequels to remakes as well. Here are his credentials: 1. Pennies from Heaven - a remake of the original British mini-series Pennies from Heaven 2. Little Shop of Horrors - a musical remake of the original Little Shop of Horrors 3. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - a remake of Bedtime Story 4. Father of the Bride - a remake of the original Father of the Bride 5. Mixed Nuts - a remake of Le Père Noël est une ordure 6. Father of the Bride Part II - a sequel to the remake of the original Father of the Bride 7. Sgt. Bilko - a remake of the original TV series The Phil Silvers Show 8. The Out-of-Towners - a remake of the original The Out of Towners 9. Cheaper by the Dozen - technically not a remake, but there already was another Cheaper by the Dozen movie based off of the same novel 10. Cheaper by the Dozen 2 - sequel to what I'm guessing is basically a remake 11. The Pink Panther - loose remake of the original The Pink Panther 12. The Pink Panther 2 - sequel to the remake of The Pink Panther 13. But still, can anyone think of a a person out there that could rival Steve Martin as the king of the remake? Body: 1. Manhattan: A Woody Allen classic all too often overshadowed by Annie Hall. The story is pretty much the same as most of Allen's films. He plays a lusty, bumbling New Yorker seeking love wherever he can find it�a search which lands him with a high schooler and later his best friend's mistress. With Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton. 2. Small Time Crooks: One of the few recent Woody Allen films worth seeing. The story follows one cookie manufacturer from near failure and foreclosure to fortune and fraud: delightful! 3. Coming to America: Eddie Murphy at his best! Murphy as an African prince arrives in Queens to find a wife and goes undercover as an employee at fast-food restaurant. 4. Trading Places: Eddie Murphy was so funny once, what happened? Oh, right. Enter: Norbit. Here, Dan Aykroyd and Murphy team up to get back at Aykroyd's boss and stick it to The Man. 5. Blues Brothers: Another fine moment for Dan Aykroyd. Aykroyd and Jon Belushi, in this musical-comedy quest, come together as Midwestern crooks and reunite their blues band in order to raise the money to save the orphanage where they grew up. 6. Body: One of my guilty pleasures. I watch it whenever it’s on TV. It’s not laugh-out-loud funny, there’s not a lot of big time adventure, there’s no shocking twists or a surprise ending. It’s just a pleasant movie with a good cast that makes me smile. Martin Short as the wedding planner is good comedy.
