Title: Funny Games
Year: 2008
Director: Michael Haneke
Plot: In this exploration of our violent society, writer and director Michael Haneke takes a disturbing look at how depictions of violence at once reflect and shape our culture. A well-to-do German family -- father Georg (Ulrich Muhe), mother Anna (Susanne Lothar), and son Georgie (Stefan Clapczynski) -- are settling in for the weekend at their vacation retreat near the lake. While George and his son head out for some sailing, a courteous young gentleman named Peter (Frank Giering) appears at the door, asking if he can borrow some eggs. When he breaks them, Anna offers him some more, but the conversation soon takes an odd turn; Peter goes from pleasant to sniveling to confrontational, and he's soon joined by his friend Paul (Arno Frisch). When George returns, he demands that Paul and Peter leave, but the two strangers refuse; Paul and Peter react with violence against Georg and his family, and they soon have the family tied up and begin torturing them. Peter and Paul occasionally refer to the camera in a manner recalling Bertolt Brecht, and near the end of the film, they even demand the opportunity to replay a scene so that they may mete out more punishment against their victims. The score includes classical selections by Mozart and Handel as well as performances by avant-garde composer John Zorn. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body:
Alright, time to pick this discussion back up.. Sorry for the delay, I meant to post at least once a week here but I've been really under the weather lately and am just getting back on my feet. So where are we? First of all, is anyone following along? Well y'all should have at least caught up to Funny Games by now so let's open up that discussion. I guess if you haven't seen it, as Brian said, WATCH IT and come back to this topic.... SPOILERS TO FOLLOW. I absolutely love this film, unclefestering mentioned earlier that he always found it to be overrated and I'd like to hear his reasoning. I think this film gets better with every viewing. I think what Haneke does with the third wall is incredible. The two home invaders in this film are in a way, superimposed voices of the filmmaker. The spend the vast majority of the film telling you how it will end, and for some reason, you as the audience never believe them. The way Haneke maneuvers through this technique is what I love the most about this film. There is another, probably more profound aspect to this film as well. It tricks the audience into thinking that this is some sort of torture porn. In a way, it still is. But, it is much more of Haneke rubbing our nose in it. I think he is very condescendingly asking: "Is this really what you want to see?".... "Because this is what it actually looks like." ** Hint: If you like this aspect, it is also very prevalent in at least one of his other films later in this marathon.** Anyway, that's my quick two cents. I want to hear what the rest of you have to say.
I think you are right on with your assessment. It has been many years since I have seen this movie so I have forgotten a lot, but a lot of things still stick out to me too. Obviously the most memorable part is the remote control scene. It's so amazing. If you don't get the theme at that point, it's almost like the film maker reaching out of the movie saying "Don't forget how truely powerless you are as an audience member in a movie. I can do whatever I want. I can fool you or show you anything. You can care about the characters all you want, but I am in full control." I also have a strong memory of the very beginning of the movie where the happy family is in the car. The father puts in some CD marked at classical music. And clearly this is what the family is hearing, but the audience is hearing some pretty disturbing, wild, threatenting, evil metal music. What do you think of this? I think this is just a little sign and prep for that audience that this happiness is about to be completely ruined and smashed to bits. And also another realization that the director is in control. I thought I remember hearing somewhere this movie was going to be called "Two Eggs". Kind of interesting how the film escalates from the simple act of borrowing an egg and then turns into an annoyance and more and more hostility and violence.
Body:

Emery, you HAVE seen the personal statement that has always been on my profile haven't you?
Yes of course I have and I have to admit that I thought of you and your brilliant observations while watching The Collector last week. Pancakes, Emery
Hah, yeah I just read the synopsis for The Collector! Too bad you say it wasn't that good. The first two Home Alone movies were amongst the most watched in my youth and I still like to put them in around every Christmas. It was actually during one of these Christmas parties watching Home Alone that I shouted out suddenly "Ever seen the movie Straw Dogs?" I guess something about how or when I said it was amusing the the company and they would repeat it around me, so I kind of took it on as my catch phrase. The home invasion parts were of course the centerpieces for the Home Alone movies though and every child's delight. Basically it was like the sillyness of a human cartoon, but with all of the human pain. I'm surprised that you made this the weekly topic this week while you are at the same time running your Michael Haneke marathon and didn't even bring up Funny Games! Now that is a home invasion movie if I ever saw one!! Also, I've never seen it, but from what I know about the plot of Panic Room, it sounds applicable too. Has anyone seen it? I find David Fincher to be a capable director, although after seeing The Game I can't say that all of the plots he takes on are that believable. Anyone ever heard of or seen Lady in a Cage? I haven't but I love the idea of the plot.
Body: Well I've actually seen the original Funny Games and The Seventh Continent. I would love to talk about both of them, especially Funny Games. Since what I would be talking about would include spoilers though, I'll wait until everyone has confirmed they've watched it now. But I'll be back. Please everyone see this one!!!
I've heard the American remake was almost shot for shot the same so I guess it probably doesn't matter. I'll probably stick with the original because it will keep the schedule in chronological order but whatever.
I'm loaded for this, although I personally thought that Funny Games ws way overrated. I've gone with the original one this time. Maybe that will improve it.
Awesome!! Andy's here... Body: I'm going to be starting this marathon next Monday and I'll be giving each film a week. I've only seen one Haneke film thus far (Funny Games) and I loved it. I know some of his other stuff has received a considerable amount of praise so I've been wanting to catch up with more of it. He also just won the Palm D'Or at Cannes for his newest film, The White Ribbon. So I've picked 4 films that are very easy to get. All are available from Netflix and/or Blockbuster.com. So let's get started. July 27th - August 2nd : 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance August 3rd - August 9th : Funny Games August 10th - August 16th : The Piano Teacher August 17th - August 23rd : Cache Well there you have it. Four films and about a month to get to know Michael Haneke. So fire up your queue, and let's check these out. * I'm not sure how much it actually matters whether or not you follow the schedule, but you know.... whatever..
Body:
Hm, so many of the ones I would pick have already been picked. Theres a few notables missing, however. One of the all-time weirdest: The Fountain Darren Aronofsky (sp?) at his weirdest. I would try to explain it, but I'm not sure I can anymore. If you're interested, I reviewed it here. Requiem for a Dream Same director as Pi and the Fountain. The really trippy drug induced fantasies and hallucinations, plus the steady downward spiral of all the characters in this film make it a weird one. Fantasia Satan. Mickey Mouse. Pluto. Wizards. Demons. Nuff said. Me and You and Everyone We Know I saw this one twice and still can't really figure out quite what it is about. I've heard a wide range of theories. All I know is there is a 5 year old making out with a 35 year old woman, and he's obsessed with 'pooping back and forth forever'. Is it a metaphor? Is it funny? I don't really know. Stranger than Fiction / The Science of Sleep I don't know why, but I always think of these films together. Anyways, I think they both should be included on any 'weird' list. Both have pretty strange concepts that seem like they wouldn't work/be that interesting, but somehow both of them turned out to be good films--a big compliment to STF considering I don't like Will Ferrel as a rule of thumb. Both will definately mess with your mind a bit.
It's been ages since I've seen Fantasia, but I will vouch for The Science of Sleep and Me and You and Everyone We Know for being weird. Science of Sleep is such an amazing movie. Another thread around here somewhere spoke of Amelie as being a "gateway drug" to other foreign flicks. My brother has always adamently refused to watch foreign movies on the basis that he doesn't like to "read his movies." But he caught the last half of Science of Sleep and loved it. Something about how they keep switching between three languages for the entire film has this whirlwind effect that just sucks you up and moves you through the narrative, even when it's not so narrativey. Stranger Than Fiction is a pretty good metafiction film, but as far as metafiction is concerned, I have to offer up a couple of Michael Haneke films, Cache and Funny Games. While neither of these movies might be considered "weird," they have a fourth-wall-breaking aspect that your average film doesn't. And that's the understatement of the century. Cache has some disturbing imagery at one point, which seems more gruesome than that of Funny Games, even though Funny Games is far gorier. I think it has something to do with the way Funny Games incorporates its violence, the way that the "bad guys" let you, the audience, know that you know what these games are all about, and you're used to it by now. It's quite convincing, which I guess is the true horror of the film.
Body: What is this guy (Haneke) playing at ?..i could give it a three word review Pa-the-tic!... "Henry" the serial killer meets "Click" ! Yeah we get it..we are the voyeurs, this is so clever...why are we watching?..and all that... The breaking the "fourth wall" bits arent even obvious enough to start with . .If anything the depiction of the torture scenario is too intense, too realsitic for what this ultimately purports to be,That is, a treatise on our voyeuristic violence obsessed viewing habits..but , when he winds the tape back, for cryin out loud what a joke! the anger sets in... Why have i wasted my time watching this?..Dont make the same mistake... Obviously i couldnt help giving a thought or two to the Hollywood remake..I suppose Naomi Watts is pretty good at crying and going red in the face...
